Thanks Fallenphoenix for the comments..you are right, they look a little underexposed. For all the shots, I was using the manual mode and learning the meaning of apertures and F/stops, etc.

I am now off to try some more shots and hopefully of some buildings.

In the meantime...here are some attempts at marco shooting:-

For macro focus, most of the time it is best to have the eyes or if those are too small, the head of the subject in focus. Try to frame your shot such that the background does not have any distracting elements, that will take the persons eye away from your subject. You might want to move the camera lower, higher etc. This is the advantage of the tilt/swivel LCD. For instance, image #2, you can try shooting from a lower angle, this might get less of the brown stalks that are currently in focus and which I find distracting.

You might want to try shooting butts with the long end of the lens, this way you can get them without scaring them away.

In terms of exposure, you might want to be careful about shot #1. The white patches on the wings are blown out. If metering is a pain, you can always lower the EV by 1/3 or more. Make sure the subject is exposed, since most of the time, you do not really care for the background.

BTW, I shoot almost all my macros in P mode. In terms of focusing, you can try locking the focus at one point, and move the camera towards/away from the subject for focusing.

Hello all.. I've had the S3 for 2 years now and have not really taken anything else but family photos :) So recently been bitten by the photo bug (and alot of free time), I thought I give it a try and take some pictures so please bear with me and comments always welcome for me to improve:-

Try to take this shot on a day with a nice sky. Hopefully some wispy clouds, or you can try at dusk, before the sun sets, for some nice colours and you will have some lights in the building on. The sky is blown out at the moment. You might want to give more sky into the shot, less building. You can try shooting in the wide mode, makes the final image taller and thinner. For me, the composition interesting. The picture is a bit dull though.

Lastly..a man on his bike:-

I like how the path leads your eye to the subject (normally termed leading lines). You might want to make the shot tighter though, so there is less of the trees in the top. Get rid of that small patch of sky. Assume you added the vignette? It seems unnatural to me, since vignetting is normally around the entire lens. You might want to try a gentler gradient on the vignette.

You are right about adding in the vignette in the man on bike shot... I was playing around with PS..same story with my camera..had it for awhile but never made use if it. Will play around a bit more..seems like fun.

I like the picture no.3 but maybe if you lower down the boat more water on the upper side would be nicer?

hi! thanks!

I usually shoot with P mode with a few help of AV mode.My shots have those cast of greens and yellows as i love shooting with the flash whitebalance.

With that kinda colors set, i can easily tweak the contrasts in Paintshop PRO or (for you guys photoshop)

:D:D

Actually, the full moon is not as interesting as a partial moon. With your shot, you can see the shadows in the craters. The shadows tend to be more pronounced near the terminator. This gives the image some texture and 'depth'.

Nice shot. :)
