great idea, will shoot still life macro. thanks

Not sure about the Pro 7 or the Acute 2 as I've not used them before but I've used the Bowen and it proved to be good.

Other than what you have pointed out, one of the main diff, at least to me, is the filter size. Pro series ringflash usually have a filter size above 77mm so there's no worries about vignetteing on my image.

Your last para mention:
get a larger light source before it starts to vignette
I assume that you're talking about light fall off? Yeah, agreed with that.

The Pro 7 and Acute 2 ring flashes do not attach to the front of the lens, so the size of the filter is not relevant. Did the Bowens ring flash attach to the front of the lens?? I really don't think it does. I have seen and used a couple of different brands of ring flashes, with the exception of the ring flash from Calumet for the Norman 400B, and they are attached via a bracket that attaches to the bottom of the camera. The weight of the flash and the fact that you are tethered to the powerpack doesn't make sense to have the flash attached to the front of the lens. The smaller ones that attach to the front of the lens are much lighter and smaller.

Err.. That is very chiam leh.. anyone can convert it to simple english???

Am very interested to understand what a ring flash can be used for.

Oh my.Ok lets take it from the top. TS wants to buy a ring flash to do portraiture work.

In classical ie traditional portraiture work no one uses a ring flash because the effect of a ring flash the shadow rim around the subject actually draws some attention away. It is also a flat light which tends to make for less interesting facial shapes. IE if you have a broad face go in close with a ring flash would make said face very round and well fat.

Normally u see this used in fashion, glamour, or drama mama kind of people work. Where you are trying to add sizzle to the picture by using an unusal lighting effect. Hopefully you have a good picture there, because many times this is an attempt to make some that has not sizzle by itself ie people shot where photog has not been able to make the people come alive and not look sian, dead, lifless, souless, like empty meat sacks. But hey who looks at basic picture content.

In certain industries - fashion, music where well some of the clients may not have seen the ring flash look before get to excited on seeing something new that they think the photog is dam solid one because they see the shadow rimming the people, they failed to see the basic photo is not happening. Of course in those industries you also have dam solid people who could make people look good no matter what lighting they use, with high drama lighting like a ring flash they can easily make a static shot look dam happening. Go see some re runs of 2nd season the next super model series - the one I happens to catch was with the kump dance - a ring flash was used with the new Hassy - photog kwnew what he was doing some shots were very good , most had highten sense of drama. Could he have done the same with out a ring flash - I am guessing yes but he would need to set up more and be more constrained by where the 3 to 5 people in the shot are in relation to the model.

You could play about with a very limited ring flash effect with a round floursence tube. Or like some othere posters have given url's of other diy ring flash lighting setups. Sport Illustrated photog once set up an improtu ring flash by duct taping 4 hot shoe flashes around a lens and daisy chaining the lot with a pc syn cord to fire all a same time. You get the shadow rim but may I think not the full ring in the eye but close enough that it looks well unusal.
Ok I need a coffee mouth dry already.

Nah..Coffee here, teacher..Please come back and give more lectures..Thank you...:D

I think I posted this before

Done with a fluorescent ring tube. The obvious drawbacks are the low power you get and the greenish cast that can be quite hard to correct. Sigh, still saving up for my profoto ringflash

Use this contraption. Shoot the grey card first. Set custom WB according to the DSLR u use. Then reshoot with actual subject.

Of course, this answers the color correction.

Low power and no $$$ part has to be answered by somebody else, perhaps? Singapore Pools?

by the way, the bracket mounted ones can be mounted on lighting stands for alternate uses of the ringflash...the light halo would not be around the iris of the eyes, which can look quite weird in some shots...

and its true, in fashion photography, people are always trying new things out to make a breakthrough from what was done before...some ideas stink, some come out great...

Looking for 1 also ..
can try out the sigma Ring flash.. other then that.. the cost will be the next hindering factor

Equipment is buy for work, for project. If the project cover the cost of the purchase, then what the heck are you talking about hindering factor?

The equipement can be bought anytime. So I dun understand why the cost would be hindering the purchase, unless you have no project or probably doing grunt jobs.

I duno.... just my 2 cents worth.

Ok,
TS, jeanie is looking for a ring flash, a type of flash the is in circular shape and go round the lens of the camera when in use.

the flash you show here, is a studio flash with modeling lamp. not ring flash.

third, most studio flash with modeling lamps (any brands), have the option of the brightness control of the modeling lamps, on or off, on or off when the flash trigger (means the lamp is on when the flash is trigger, or the lamp go off when the flash is trigger, on again when the flash is charge)

going round the camera are those sb 21 & 29, right? In fact I improvised different size of light weight hollow tubing for the ring to take wound injuries like the eye and hand for the hospital consultation. You can also read up information like balcar lighting which I bought a
pair of spotflux 4 for dimming system. So I hope this option is there for you.
