just posted the same in macro forum. basically a test shoot of my vivitar 105mm that just arrived this week... wanted to make sure i got a sharp copy![]()
its a beautiful lens. build quality is awesome, focus throw is fantastic... my only complaint: weight  its nearly twice the weight of the 100mm pentax d-fa macros. takes some getting used to for handheld shots.

DOF was razor thin on this one... it was very tiny and i had to add 65mm of extension tubes to get greater than 1:1 magnification

Donald, I like your 1st pic. ;p
Without a doubt, its a sharp copy. The shadows beneath is quite dark. Improve on alleviating the shadow or soften it.
The lens is sharp!!
Took these 2 pics yesterday.
Both HDR.

2 diffusers from 2 flashes? or plate with original diffuser on the flash? the shadow is soft and not distracting. very good results.
on a lighter side, the spider seems to wear a pair of boxing glove :bsmilie:
2 plate diffusers and 2 flashes and many others have shadows. Often have to increase iso to 300 or 400 for A200. shorter focal length requires lesser light power. Still not sure why certain has more dark shadows. Likely the position of the diffusers, whether tilting forward and holding it vertical as the position of the camera. I am learning thru trial and error for A200 but for vivitar 105, more or less, shadows can be eliminated, even with smaller aperture and faster shutter speed.
Right now, I am using 2 flashlights and 2 diffusers with kirk macro bracket. Heavy set-up, at a cost of immobility and cumbersome.
Ideally, if charlie single flash can have that wow effect, go for that.

if the kirk bracket can give you better lighting and workable longer lens barrel, it is worth it. however, i am going the light & simple way. dont want to aggravate my "macro" elbow. for better lighting control & weight watching, i ditched my tammy for the shorter & lighter Pentax DFA100.
i think charlie softbox is working very well. having the softbox near or on top of the subject give your more lighting option. i am still looking forward to his posts.

I think you can go for this lighter and cheaper setup demonstrated by kurt aka OrionMystery.
