yea i agree that it's too big and will touch the leaves and scare away the subject..
btw which is charlie's setup?

softbox. can see the pix from the last outing to AMK park.

It's a thin line between improvements of lighting versus portability. I cannot stand heavy setups. That's why I like See Fei's setup.

Come we go shoot cats together. :bsmilie: Your problem sounds very similar when choosing a tripod. Sacrifice something for something else.

I am developing an elbow sore that take longer and longer to go away. dont know whether i am having a macro-elbow.

for the moment i am limiting my accessories to just a $15 flash flash bracket, a monopod and the charkteow diffuser. to lessen the sore, i am carrying my rig on my left hand when i am not shooting. i saw Charlie setup and the end results which are good. maybe you can consider his setup also.

Too much macro outings for you? Go rub some ointment.

I'm inspired by this poor man's setup (which was posted some times ago in our pentax section). His patience and effort really paid off.

Not much of a Keeper today, since went to my usual macro hangout (Opposite Mandai Orchid Garden)just after the rain. The insects very agitated and start to fly or jump away two feet upon reaching.haiz. Anyways, not much but managed to catch a glimpse of a very big snakehead.wow.

Here is one to share.

Charlie, this set up is not suitable for outdoor use. heavy and clumsy.

anyway, if you look at his JS photo, all have this white clothe beneath it. suspect he used a studio to shoot these photos. the JS were probably captured from the wild and brought to the studio for the shoot. ....

just my kaypohness & i may not be right. dont flame me hor :bsmilie:

It is suitable because i think he should be in his 20s, he mentioned he's an undergrad ;p but i think he's using extension tubes lately instead of the bellows.

Studio is way overkill. JS is so small, you know when we revisited AMK last week, i brought the JS all the way back to Mcdonalds and it didnt even move an inch from the leaf...lol.

I believe those white floor u saw are just so happen that the bug flew and landed on some man made constructions.
Next time you bring along some small colour fabrics/piece of white paper on your macro outings.:D

Thanks Seefei, yeah no2 is OOF. I had a hard time on this fella coz he run around and being thin means he can go places I cant. hehe. Meaning there is no keeper for him then. :(

can EQ your dilemma with the mantis. i ever shot the same mantis over 3 days and not a decent keeper. the worst type of mantis to shoot is the black with yellow band mantis. usual philo, the more you shoot the luckier you get!!

the fact that you brought a JS to McD meant it is doable right? you idol maybe shooting in an artificial setup and you are actually reinforcing my point above. :bsmilie:

he is shooting on the field la... JS no matter where u put is hard to shoot... That guy can do it hand held with extension tube, reverse and dunno what other thing he use... u have to give it to him... what setup, how he do it, whatever, only the results matters... can be 5cent setup, can be $5000, results is crap is crap, good is good, no 2 ways about it...

if u use a $5000 and produce fantastic results, i say u are good, if u use 5cent setup and also produce great results, i say u are good too... no one is better than the other... its just how we use things that suits us...

so next time.. dun ask me what lens or equipment i use... i use my brain...:bsmilie:

Hehehehe, what im trying to say is, you can transport the JS to whatever surface you want to shoot. So if it's an artificial setup, it still wow me because of the creativity he puts in, not sure about you though. That means he's putting elements into a photo. Somewhere along the line, we are copying each others' style and then putting different or unique elements into his/her photo. Maybe that style is my cup of tea

btw, i don't know what seefei means by bringing home for studio shoot leh, can't we just bring our portable studio setup to the site? :dunno:

yalah, you are right. it is different style. but i sincerely hope you dont develop this habit of taking your subjects to the McD if you intent to shoot live insects. your action may create a cottage industry of kids capturing live insects and selling them in AMK Park McD for those macro shooters who want to shoot in style. it will be a sad day if that happen and forumers start to defend this type of behaviour as a "style".

Thats so true seefei, my intention was to let Lawrence shoot the JS as he's waiting for us there. Thereafter, we let the JS go because just right beside Macdonalds there are schrubs everywhere and its just located beside the park. I just hope forumers will do their style in an ethical and respective ways to the nature. Do it and return back.

Ant Mimic Spider

Shot tis at the same location as yesterday. Dual flash (in-built flash/slave riva3000 on a bracket) and plate on monopod.

Spotting tip: look for those big solitary running black ants. When they stop running and settle down, check whether it is your lucky day. :bsmilie:
