Met up with Sarita last Saturday for a casual shoot at Beijing 798 Arts area. She is a full-time singer and part-time model from the Philippines. All photos taken with my K20D and DA40mm F2.8 pancake, except for the photo below, with the DA21mm. Links to the rest of the photos here. All comments welcome.

Long time never post. I guess i should contribute something back to the community. I also received a few messages asking whether i am leaving Pentax. The answer is NO, im just re organizing my equipment and using Pentax purely on film thats all.:) Im keeping all my FA lenses till the time is right to come back to digital. There are financial and also personal reasons behind it. Will i miss taking portraits and XMM :bsmilie: dun worry i already have that covered...Anyway back to what this post is about. I started taking mainly portraits so i guess i should present something on portraits as well...

I have own a few lenses suitable for portraits

FA50mm f1.4, 77mm f1.8 and 85mm f1.4. Which is the best ? i personally like the working distance of the the 77, in terms of rendering its still the 77, likewise contrast and color. When it comes to bokeh nothing beats the 85. So how ? Which is in my books the best portraits lens ? Its the 85 simply for its ability to capture what the 77 can't at longer distance... which also means full body length...The 77 only excel when u are no more than 2-3 m away from the subject, anything further, its just a ordinary portrait lens. No magic. But the 85 is able to deliver at longer distances...

Having said that, don't discount the 77, cause its an amazing lens. The full potential of this lens is just not met with the current crop sensor. On a FF, the working distance will be much closer thus giving the 77 its true working distance and its true potential. Likewise the 50mm, if you were to do close up head shots, at f2.2 to f2.8, the 50 is also magic...

Without looking at the EXIF data. Can you tell which is shot by the 85 and which is by the 77 ? Both are shot at wide open. But the results will be very different if we were to shot further away from the subject thus crippling the potential of the 77 on a crop sensor...

I hope this helps those who is deciding whether to get the 77 or not. All i can say is i never regret getting this lens ever, only regret is why i never got it earlier...use it correctly, it stands toe to toe with the best out there... :)

very nice first picture there bro (flowerpot). :)

anyways, not sure about you, i find 4:3 much better for portraiture, and it might be better here by removing space on right. but then again, this is to showcase pentax pictures.... :)

Thanks for sharing. Its really not everyday that someone can share insights and picts of both 77ltd and the FA85 since they are so costly, many have either one or none :)

I'd think indoors, 77ltd has an advantage due to the shorter focal length (very slight, cause 50mm is more usable in such situations). Otherwise, I'd have to say the FA85 is better. (In the context of portraits only). Then again, the FA85 is no longer in production and more expensive by around $600-$800. The 77ltd can be had new, and cheaper.

Ok, the fun part. (Rolls the dice)
This is the one by the FA85. Focus distance is longer (head to waist level), while OOF rendering is still very good.

Very beautiful model and an excellent shot BTW.

Starting a new hip shooting gallery, utilizing shadows and silhouettes. Inspired by the Hort Park outing.

Got a Super Takumar 55mm / 1.8 to try, with the intent of selling off eventually because I don't really need it. Was curious after hearing all about the addictiveness of Takumar lenses, and managed to get one in quite a good condition.

First impressions and feel of the lens: its tiny! Not a pancake, but nonetheless much smaller than any other lens I have. Its smaller than the FA43 Ltd in terms of the lens diameter. When mounted on the K20D with a M42 adaptor, the electronic contacts of the camera mount can be seen. Handling and focusing is silky smooth - the focusing ring glides over the lens body effortlessly, and feels better than any of the MF lenses I've handled to date.

The image quality delivered by the lens was by no means disappointing, even with the relatively high expectations of it. Sharp, bokeh was brilliant, and the CA was quite well controlled for a non-SMC lens. (though there is some sort of coating on the lens, judging from the green and violet hue from reflections on the glass).

And finally, images from the lens, mostly wide open

this one's stopped down to f5.6

wide open - can see some CA on the silver wheel rim, but not too bad

this was under harsh lighting, and no CA. wide open - I like the bokeh for this one

stopped down to abt f8 - nice and crisp

high contrast situation. I did PP this quite a bit but only on the lighting and contrast. The lens did a great job on the lines

Its a nice lens in a small package. IMO, comparable to the other Pentax 50mms. I find it rather tight compared to an actual 50mm, even though its only a 5mm difference. Somehow, the Takumars have super smooth focusing compared to the K and M series.

Went to Little India last Friday to try some b&w film. Believe it or not, this was my first time ever shooting b&w film:) I brought a manual Pentax film camera (LX) and a manual 35mm lens (M35/2.8), a couple rolls cheap China made b&w film (公元黑白胶卷) along w /me, no digital on that day. I don't know how to develop b&w film myself yet, so I sent the film to FEIFEI in Chinatown for development and scan.

Here are some of the results directly from FEIFEI, no other post process except resizing:

I'm still pretty new to b&w film, next time I'd probably try to develop on my own :)

You can find some other results I got from that day here:

The former Prime Minister of Israel, Ehud Olmert was invited to give an address at the University of Chicago on 15 Oct 2009. Various Palestinian, Muslim and human rights groups gathered on campus to protest against Olmert's role in the Israel-Gaza conflict. Despite the cold and drizzle, the protesters were charged with passion and emotion. A couple of pro-Israeli supporters gathering on the opposite corner of the intersection; however, the police presence ensured that it proceeded in a controlled and peaceful manner.

Something to share with you guys, since such sights are never-seen in Singapore.

These 3 were shot with FA35

great fun indeed.. shooting in the cold rain definitely put the pentax weather-sealing to the test! one of the policemen on duty was quite curious about whether my camera was water-proof. he even suggested i shoot underwater with it :bsmilie:

Buy a W80 or W60 and show him that you can shoot under water with a Pentax too ;)

Taken using a Enna Tele-ennalyt 400/4.5. What this lens lacks in resolution, it makes up for in brute focal length. The trick to using it seems to be to fill as much of the frame as possible so that there is no need to crop. A pain to get good focus, but I think I'm getting better w/ the help of a tripod. The initial 'macho' attempts to do it hand held was just kicking my own ass :D
