Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 Specification

Some interesting notes from Panasonic LX-5 Press Release:

http://www.panasonic.net/avc/lumix/popup/pressrelease/first_half_new_production2010_3.html#1

1) Redesigned CCD increases the sensitivity by approx. 31% and the saturation by approx. 38%. (Panasonic in-house comparison with DMC-LX3)

2) Newly developed Venus Engine FHD gains approx. 40% higher speed. (In comparison with DMC-LX3, using 1-area AF, at wide/tele-end)

BAse on the photo, seem like ISO800 still look ok. But really have to do field test when its release. Anyway the best deal about this cam will be the HD recording. Look very impressive on the paper about the HD recording. But this is just a "good to have" point when come to PnS. lets see how this cam turn out to be.

LX5-> According to Panasonic it’ll prove noiseless at ISO 800!
LX5-> Panasonic has added LED technology to the 3-inch LCD screen

Based on the LX5 sample photos from the link above, there are some noises even at ISO80 level. The objects are not sharp either. The colours are also not appealing. It never give me a "wow" feeling. I'm wondering if it is due to the pre-production stage. :thumbsd:

Good thing I haven't bought the LX3 yet. So I guess more LX3s will flood the BnS section now.

Better sensor
Better video recording
Better LCD screen
Can use the GF1 EVF

WIN

It is selling at USD500 in US and you can only use Panasonic battery on this LX5 (heard that the battery is not cheap). Given this price, I suspect if it is a worth successor to the LX3.

I know where you coming from. From the first look I too agreed with you it does not really have the "wow" effect as the LX3 when it first release. Same goes for the EX1. Though got the "wow" effect, end up also a let down.

At least EX1 is USD100 cheaper than LX5. The LX5 EVF is not cheap though.
Other things that EX1 is better than LX5 are:
1) F1.8 (EX1) vs F2.0 (LX5)
2) Bigger sensor size 1/1.7 (EX1) vs 1/1.63 (LX5)
3) Swiveling AMOLED screen
4) 920k-dot resolution AMOLED screen (EX1) vs 460k-dot resolution LCD screen (LX5)

Well, have to wait after the production stage to see more photos taken by LX5 then we can see if LX5 worth the price.

Hai ... why you want to go LX3, should aim for the lastest PnS out there, 2nd hand LX3 still cost alot more that EX1 "lastest". you should go Ex1 better .. :bsmilie:

1/1.7in sensor is smaller than 1/1.63in sensor.

i only interested in taking photos, video not important to me. still, want to see the comparison between LX3, LX5 & EX1 (though many csers own EX1, but non willing to come forward to do a side by side comparison with LX3:dunno::dunno:). even when dpreview's comparison between EX1 & LX3, some say it is not fair as the 2x EX1 that was sent to dpreview has fault.

while i am tempted by EX1's swivel screen, but from the little test i did, it was no LX3 killer (not evennear). so I am now lookng forward to seeing the next LX3 killer, LX5.

i find LX5's color & contrast of the photos in the link posted by ShaneKua are all quite flat, across all ISO. but can only tell for sure if there is a side by side comparison with LX3, especially ISO400 & ISO800 image quality.

With all the side-by-side image comparisons of the EX1 vs the LX3, I still like the images produced by the LX3. The LX3 is still unbeatable as a compact. The difference in image quality is just too much. All the EX1 has going for itself for me are the f/1.8 lens and the swivel LCD. The swivel LCD, I can live without. The one-stop less light of the f2 lens, not really a deal-breaker for me.

Being someone who doesn't own either the EX1 or LX3, if the LX5 can give me images as good as the LX3 at the least, top that with the other welcome changes in video recording and EVF compatibility, and it's small size (even smaller than the EX1), I don't think it's a tough choice at all.

The "LX3 killer" is a gimmick used by Samsung for marketing purposes. I believe majority EX1 users don't think like that. After seeing the lousy LX5 sample shots, I think "LX3 killer" is not realistic, even Panasonic themselves are unable to come out with a better camera to kill LX3 after 2 years. Unless the camera makers can come up with a new and cheaper technology for compact camera, there is no way to achieve that with a small sensor and fixed lens.
