Panasonic GH3

Is it only me or did I miss something ?

You guys also can only:
1) record for 3 mins ?
2) stop recording by pressing the button on the camera (instead on the iPhone) ?

Thanks

Yeah, you missed something alright. Those are known features (or rather, limitations) of the app. In fact, video recording wasn't even possible with the early version of the app, was only added in a later update. Hope they continue to improve the app.
You should be able to set the timer.

While recording, the remaining recording time is displayed on screen. The clip being recorded will be displayed on the digital camera. When recording has finished, you will return to the previous screen.
Recording videos is set to the timer function. You cannot stop recording partway through using a smartphone / tablet.
The recorded image will be saved to the digital camera.

GH3 shooters, the Fhugen Honu GH3 cage is now available at Artwork Foto for $260. Great price considering it's USD199 without shipping! Got mine almost instantly after seeing it! Not sure how many sets they brought in.

Thanks Deunamist & kandinsky for the headsup.

But how to activate the flash ? The flash will hit the cage & get stuck, right ?

Possible to mount the cage on a tripod ?

Thanks

It's designed for video use, so the flash won't be needed at all.

On that page there's a video of it on a tripod.
As well as a photo of the bottom:

Hi all GH3 users out there,

I am trying to try out the slow-mo features.

I set the camera Rec Mode to .mov and Rec Quality to 1920 x 1080 50p 50Mps.

So in order to record it at 40%, I have to change the Frame Rate from Off to 40%. Upon doing that, the Rec Quality always auto change to 24p. How do I maintain the recording quality at 50P ?

Thanks

You choose one or the other.

For slow mo, the clips are all conformed to 25p in Premiere. (You right click on all the highlighted MOV files, chose Modify and Interpret Footage, then change the frame rate to 25 or 24). The in-camera slow-mo option works well too if you want super slow mo straight out of the camera (40% = 24p and 50% = 25p or 30p) – but I wanted the choice in post. Interestingly, though the PAL / European model of the GH3 doesn’t shoot 1080/60p (it goes up to 50p) you can still get the 40% slow mo which toggles 1080/60p on the sensor and a 24p output.

Choosing to slow down in-camera is the same as choosing to shoot at 60/50 fps...the camera just automatically applies the metadata so that your NLE will play it back at 24fps. It's a convenience factor.

In other words, if you shoot at 60 fps in camera, you have to slow it down 40% in your editor. If you shoot with the camera applying the 40% slow-down, it records the exact same number of frames, you just don't have to do any extra work after the fact.

Alamak, so the GH3 actually didn't give any advantage in slow-mo. It only gives convenience.

We either take a clip recorded in 50p and slow it down in a NLE using a 25p or the GH3 auto do this for us and we just put the clip straight to NLE ...?

Hi all GH3 users,

Want to tap your knowledge & experiences on m4/3 lens for GH3.

I was shooting some video just now & I find that while zooming in and out, my speed is not constant. Unlike my VG30 PZ 18-200 mm lens which is a powered zoom that can control the speed to slow, medium or fast, I find that the bundled panasonic 12-35mm f2.8 lens did not come with this feature.

I search the web for powered zoom lens and is it correct to say these are the only panasonic m4/3 lens that we can set the speed of the zooming:
1. LUMIX® G X VARIO PZ 45-175mm / F4.0-5.6 ASPH. Lens
http://shop.panasonic.com/shop/model/H-PS45175K

2. LUMIX® G X VARIO PZ 14-42mm / F3.5-5.6 ASPH. / POWER O.I.S. Lens
http://shop.panasonic.com/shop/model/H-PS14042S

3. LUMIX® G X VARIO PZ 45-175mm / F4.0-5.6 ASPH. Lens
http://shop.panasonic.com/shop/model/H-PS45175S

4. LUMIX® G X VARIO PZ 14-42mm / F3.5-5.6 ASPH. / POWER O.I.S. Lens
http://shop.panasonic.com/shop/model/H-PS14042K

As 3 & 4 looks the same as 1 & 2, so essentially there are only 2 powered zoom lens available from Panasonic for their m4/3 cameras ?

Thanks

yeah the difference in the above lenses is just their colour. Panasonic only has 2 power zoom lens for M43. the ones you posted.

Thanks Deunamist for your confirmation. How I wish Panasonic makes more powered zoom lens.

Anyway, as I posted in the other section, what do you think of these lens on the GH3 to shoot video ?

Lumix® G VARIO 100-300mm / F4.0-5.6 / MEGA O.I.S. Lens (wanna use this to have a close-up shoot the animals like tiger at the zoo)
http://shop.panasonic.com/shop/model/H-FS100300

Lumix® G Micro 4/3 LEICA DG SUMMILUX 25mm/F1.4 ASPH. (wanna use this to have a good shallow DOF)
http://shop.panasonic.com/shop/model/H-X025

Am thinking of these 2 lens to complement the 12-35 f2.8 (which comes with the bundle) and 35-100 f2.8 (will get soon)

Thanks in advance for your opinion.

Cheers

Thanks kandinsky

Well, to put it in context, if you're looking for a interchangeable lens camera (MILC/DSLR) that shoots 1080 50/60p, it was (and still arguably is for now*) one of the better ones in it's price range with good video-centric features.

The other difference is that in 50p, audio will be captured, but note that it will also be slowed down accordingly when you conform it to a slower rate (24/25p). If you use the in camera 40% mode, no audio will be captured.

* Alternative MILCs/DSLRs are the G5, G6, Nex 5R/6, E-M5, SLT A57/58/99 etc. No canikon DSLR (other than the EOS 1-DC) captures 1080 50/60p natively. Beyond these, you'll be looking at fixed-lens camcorders or dedicated video cameras like the AF100, FS100/700, C300/500 costing way more.

Hi all,

I just bought the following lens to complement my Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8

1) Panasonic 35-100mm f2.8
2) Panasonic 100-300mm f4 - 5.6

That's why now bankrupt liao

My next wish list:
Panasonic 25mm f1.4
Olympus 75mm f1.8

Hey guys do you all experience any green shift on the GH3?. The GH2 always has this problem when the ISO is bumped up.

Not sure what is green shift.

But when I bump up the ISO, I do not recall seeing any unwanted green leh ...

GH3 sensor is made by Sony, GH2 by panasonic. Hard to intercut between the two actually. If you want to check for green shift, you will need a vectorscope. The green shift is more pronounced in the shadows.
