Panasonic GH3

Macro lens are expensive. I think there is only one in the lumix line up. You can refer to my earlier posts in this thread regarding cheap alternatives to macro lenses.
Personally, I like to use a lensbaby when I shoot close up of products because it gives better control of the exact spot I want to be in focus, regardless of distance.
Yes Bamboo, I think the macro lens are too expensive. I have check the website and the 45mm f2.8 macro lens cost much more than the 25mm f1.4. And yes, Panasonic only have 1 macro lens.

For the time being, I think I have happy enuf to use the 12-35 to shoot food or maybe I get the 25mm f1.4 to get more bokeh at the background of the food. So, I won't go into the lensbaby or macro tube or macro filter as I am not familiar ... Hahaha

For portraiture, you will definitely get a very blurred background when you use the long end of your 35-100mm, especially at f2.8
OIC, so for outdoor with my son and the buildling/shophouse as background is considered as Portrait ? So must change to a more tele lens ? I remember before I bought my 100-300, I also test at the shop with the Olympus 75mm f1.8 and the bokeh was superb. So this Olympus lens will also be good for this, right ?

Anyway, for info, I didn't buy the Olympus 75mm f1.8 because it cost around $1.2K.

Thanks

Think you need to do a google search on camera techniques dude.

Yes Boss, but that will be much to handle all at one go. I have watch many videos on the Lynda.com but there is no substitute for hands-on experience. Atm, I just go and shoot. Prob is when I am shooting & taking pics, I forgot totally what was taught in the Lynda.com videos ... :)

If I may make a suggestion: It may be more beneficial for you to start a separate thread in one of the relevant photo galleries where you can post your photos if you want more targeted feedback/critique to aid your learning process. Keep this thread for GH3-specific questions/discussion. :)

To be more specific ... Maybe keep this thread for direct GH3 'VIDEO' related discussions ... ahha

Yes, me too.

Thanks for the reminder that this is a moving picture sub-forum after all ... cheers

Hi guys, wondering anyone can give me some advise on the lens setup for more on video/filming with GH3.

Just switch over from canon so not sure how does the manual focus work for m4/3 or panasonic lenses. I read up on the 14mm f2.5 pancake seems like pretty good review and nicely priced. Is it suitable for video?

See: http://photo.stackexchange.com/questions/26428/how-does-a-fly-by-wire-focusing-lens-work

That's the case with all the native m43 lenses by Oly and Panny. Oly does have an implementation of a 'Snapshot Focus mechanism/manual focus clutch' on some lenses to simulate mechanical MF. Exceptions are lenses made by other manufacturers (Voigtländer, SLR Magic, Samyang, etc) and legacy lenses from other systems (Nikon AIS, Canon FDs, and many others) used with an adapter.

Thank u so much for the info!

Dont have to give up your EFs.
Pair with speedbooster to get Fullframe field of vision.

Seems like there are quite alot of new things to learn! first time I heard of this speed booster. thanks! Anyone of u guys who uses gh3 for short film? Willing to share your setup?

Bought this GH3 for video. Prior to this everything I did was on auto.

Am new to GH3 so started reading manual. Then start using/practising on photos/still. And forgot my main aim was for video !

Okay, better start shooting video with this GH3.

First thing I realised is that in video more difficult to get shallow depth of field !

I use both Gh3 & 5D3 for my work ...

Both share similar setup ... with all the standard run-gun stuff like rodemics, smallhd-4 EVF, cinevate, manfrottos & kessler supports ...

My GH3 goes with 12-35 + 35-100 ... Covers all angles and 2.8 is good enough for almost everything. depth of field is not as important in paid work

yeah I'm reading the manual now haha but I'm going more into video so will be testing out the different mode of video settings. With the info for speed booster I think it's really useful now.

really depends on your foreground/background placement and your aperture.

must have essentials for GH3 IMHO:
Beachtek MCC2 (adds 3 hotshoe, volume control and additional mic inputs!)
Tiffen Variable ND (lets you shoot always at 1/50)
Xume magnetic filter holder (buy this or you will never bother with the ND!)

They don't recommend it for use with step rings though. Hmm. I can see how it would be more vulnerable, but would be cool if it could.

Can I still use step rings?
Not recommended for now. Step rings make it impossible to use an over-the-lens hood and the added extension makes the filter more vulnerable to accidental detachment.
