Old/alternate lenses, adapters, and lens mount conversions.

The DP1M/2M as many have said have its quirks. But given the right conditions, good light and low ISO, the image quality is outstanding. Sigma's raw converter, SPP is a pain to use. I used it to convert to tiif, carry out WB, highlight recovery and minor colour adjustments. Then I use ACR and CS6 for final post processing. The colours remind me of slides, especially Kodachrome 64. The colours are bright, saturated and have excellent tonal range. However, at times the colours can be too saturated and lacking subtlety.. I am still learning to understand the nature of the Foveon colours. The A850/Leica R lenses combo still excels in revealing subtle tones. I think this is the strength of the Leica lenses. The resolution is unbelieveable. I think it has more resolution than the A850. The files are so sharp, I need not apply any USM in the output. I will do some printing to see how the files look.

I will be posting some of these photos in the Sigma forum.

I concur with the above. The Sigma foveon is excellent in low ISO. I am unsure how much improvements Sigma can do to the ISO capabilities. The SD1m is about 1-2 stops better than the SD15. It may take another 3-5 years for Sigma to produce a camera that can take clean ISO 1600 images and probably another 3-5 years for a FF Sigma foveon. The tones produced from the Leica R lenses are so wonderful that I am thinking of buying into the Leica M systems if the new sensor from CMOSIS proves to be as good or better than its predecessor. This should be the final nail in the coffin where gears are concern.

You should start a thread in travels sub-section for your wonderful landscapes.

I intend to downsize and reduce the weight of my gear. I am getting too old lugging a backpack with 10kg+ of equipment plus a large tripod trekking through hilly and rocky terrain. I am eagerly awaiting the Leica M as well. I have most of the M lenses I need, including the 16-18-21 Tri-Elmar, which will be my main landscape lens, together with my 35-70mm R. My 28mm M will fill in the gap.

Here is the link to my most recent South Island photos, Zenfolio | N.S. Ng | South Island, New Zealand Oct/Nov 2012 No. 51-72 were captured with the Sigma DP1M.

Thanks for sharing. Those taken with the DP1m are looking very good.

Those photos are stunning! Thanks so much for sharing!

Nothing exotic.
Just a cheap and simple Kiron 28/2.
This is a K-mount lens that was very easy to convert to EOS mount.
Just unscrew the lever protector and then unscrew the lever which is held by 2 screws.

probably at f2.5-2.8

My current ideal gear for least weight and highest quality is the GXRM with M lenses, with the Fuji XE1 as the backup. I had just added a R lens to M mount adapter for my remaining R lenses, and also a Nikon lens to M mount for my Nikon AF300f4. Mirrorless/CSC is the way to go.

Revuenon 55mm f1.2 K mount

Nice shot with the Revuenon!

Its not 'creamy smooth' bokeh or exotic but its certainly got lots of character.
I've managed to hold off LBA for a A50/1.2 simply because I like my Revuenon so much. :)

Bump! for this thread.
Seems like most ppl only interested in expensive exotics?
What about Canon 55/1.2? Nikon 105mm AI/s? Meyer Optic Gorlitz 135mm; CZJ; etc?
Tried out a Canon 55/1.2 modified for the EOS mount.
Really lovely lens, too bad it focuses no more than up to 3m, so I gave up the idea of buying it.

I'm finding the AF confirm chip on the M42>EOS adapters to be not too worth it on a 5D.
Focus hit rate isn't too high with fast lenses.
But the EE-S focusing screen is certainly worth it ( a must in fact)
Certainly the best focusing screen I've used so far for DSLRs.

I agree! Even when I am using the Zeiss ZE lenses for my 5D2, I don't trust the focus confirmation. Using the EG-S and gauging my the "pop" of your area of focus works better for me.

Are you using Dandelion or Optix?

I find the Optix to be quite accurate but I am still evaluating it.

Don't know, I just buy off ebay as "Adapter with AF confirm chip" :)
I'd have thought it has to do with the camera's own AF system (which I'm aware is limited since its an old 5Dc)

But, I'm still happy as the EE-S is really wonderful and I also have a 1.5x magnification eyepiece on the camera.

JK, you now understand why I was pushing for such a focusing screen when I was using the K5. Unfortunately, when focusingscreen.com finally decided to fabricate one, I had already sold the K5. With a pair of good eyes, the Canon #S focusing screen is a must for manual focus lenses. I still long for my Pentax K 135f2.5 on 5D.

Ha..ha..
The cheapest way might have been to get a EE-S and file it down to K5 focusing screen size (I know some guys do that).
K5 and either the K3 or stock screen + 1.2x eyepiece was still ok for me.
I just find the stock screen on my 5D to be catered for zooms of maybe f4 and above (if I used f4 and above, the stock screen focused well enough)
And based on what other users have commented on their 5D, it seems like thats the case.
