Old/alternate lenses, adapters, and lens mount conversions.

Still learning how to appreciate shooting birds with my cheapo Pentax M 200.
Small bird, don't know name, so about 100% crop, a little noisy.
All at F8, ISO 800 on NEX 5N.

Very effective shots with the M200/4.
Old lenses still do the most important stuff (take photos) :)

Another one from the S.Takumar 135/2.5

Another one from the S.Takumar 135/2.5

How is this lens compared to the K 135f2.5? I loved my K 135f2.5 when I had it on my 5D, but sold it away as I didn't like it on my K 5, a bit too long for portraits.

Hmmmmmmmmmm..bokehhhh

That's always one of the purpose for a fast 135mm :)

I've not compared 1:1.
Seldom compare lenses as I find it tedious and a waste of time poring/nik-picking over hair splitting differences.
I'd rather just use them and maybe form an impression from their use.
The M42 135/2.5 is quite new to me, so nothing conclusive, but I think its softer (we are talking real slight differences here) than the K and perhaps less contrasty than the K135 probably due to the lack of SMC.
However, it seems to be smoother in OOF rendering (likely if it was not corrected for just sharpness)

Overall, I think its a nice lens and a keeper in its own right.
A user/collector should not shy away from buying one if he manages to find one.
Too many info on the internet mix this lens up with the later Super Takumar 135/2.5 'Bayonet' version which was a cheap line of lenses that followed the M42 mounts and separate from the main 'K' line of quality lenses.
So info on this particular lens has always had a few poor remarks (actually meant for the 'bayonet' version).
Others compare it to the highly reputed K135 or similar one in M42 mount, so again its left as a 3rd lens in Pentax's line of 135mm produced.

JK, it's good for this thread that you're here. Now, we have a Pentax legacy lens guy. The thread starter, Ben, has great experiences on the Nikkor legends. Look forward to your contribution. Cheers.

Too many old lenses out there to buy :D

I found nikkors, minolta, olympus all have good deals/lenses, but gave up on buying them for now as they would not be easily compatible w/ a Pentax FF when the eventually get to it sometime in late 2013.

Hi all, thinking of getting a Pentax 300mm F4 lense, but can anyone suggest which version would be best ? Are they v expensive ? Have tried almost every legacy lense brands except for Pentax. So far fav range (for SLR) is still Oly OM.. Somehow like their build quality n colors, but quite keen to try out Pentax too, after reading all your exciting posts

Both the Pentax A and M 300f4 are excellent lenses but difficult to find locally. Go to the official pentaxforum.com site and you can find most of the info there. I have been looking for either lens for quite sometime.

Pentax's heyday was pretty much during the M42 mount period.
Even though the did not introduce the mount, they became so well known for it for the mount to be coined 'Pentax screw mount'

The thing w/ Pentax legacy lenses are that they have either held in price or gone up.
This is due to the compatability of the lenses to their dslrs.
Compared to Oly or Canon FD and others, which fewer dslrs can use easily, so can be cheaper. (Nex is ok of course)
Thats not saying one cannot find good deals though.

The Pentax A300/4 is unique for being real small and hand-holdable.
The other small one is the F*300/4.5, a small modern lens with AF.

Yes, looking in the M42 mount direction for now.
Likely CZJ.
But I keep telling myself I got a complete M42 system from 17mm to 400mm, cause I spent too much this yr already. :D

The CZJ 20/4, 180/2.8 interests me for now...

Pentax needs an FF and I hope one will come soon. Can't imagine spending money on all the FA Ltds, like what you have, and not experiencing their full potential on a good FF.

One more choice is always good :)

I tend not to want to think of this FF lens on APS-C body thing this way.
To me a photographer just takes whatever FL lens at hand and uses it to his vision be it FF, aps-c, m4/3, pns.
Lamenting over what it could have been, paid money for this and that, is just a path to being unhappy.

If the FF comes, then great!
But if not, I can always stick to 5D+other lenses if I need FF type look. :)

Jupiter 9 85/2.
I thought I'd shelved this lens as a lemon.
Came to me with a stiff focusing ring and was soft at f2.
I left it as it was for a few years after a DIY clean up job to remove grease from the focusing mechanism as it came to me with a stiff focusing ring.

With the 5D, I decided to try out this lens again since it was M42 mount and I needed a 85mm short tele for portraits.
I'm quite surprised by the results.

Still soft from f2-f4, and not contrasty, but does seem to be rather characterful.
Colors seems rather cool and I had to bump almost every shot taken with it with 100-200K of WB adjustment.

I find that it seems to do B&W better, mainly due to the low contrast.
Perhaps because of the poor coatings (or none) or that it was designed before color film.

Anyone got thoughts on this lens?

sonnar glow and 15 blades, really characterful =p

,

You've got good copies for both lenses.
Nice shots!

And I'm sure this thread will bump up more often if you keep posting photos like these ones :D

How about Mir 20mm f3.5 and Helios 40-2 85mm f1.5? Heard the production is resumed, if got lobang and can get helios 40-2 for 260-400 usd, that would be steal...
Production resumed Helios 40-2, Zenitar, TeleZenitar

That is why the Sonnar is 'Olympic' :D :D
Hand itchy only, and thinking of full body shots with this thing, but then I shudder thinking of bringing it out to use, so still considering.

I'm a bit afraid of Russian build quality after my J9.
The other thing is that these Russians went for next to nothing in the past.
Now dealers on ebay and perhaps the usability of them on some dslrs and MILC have driven them to the point that it seems better to pay a bit more for a more reputed/good lens (eg. old Nikkor; Minolta; Oly; Pentax; even Samyang).
But who knows, if I happen to see one on ebay one fine day... :)

Btw, can always discuss this more next outing. :)
