Old/alternate lenses, adapters, and lens mount conversions.

nope. of the 180/200mm primes i ve tried i ve yet to find one that excels in that area, so it's something i have to ask (plus a review mentioned that it's an issue with this lens). purple/green fringing is not fun to deal with.

In that review did the reviewer qualify it by saying that he may have got a bad copy? (e.g. maybe opened before and not put back properly by lousy repairman)

Looking through your comments, it seems that you do not really know. Except to repeat some review opinion or optics acronym often. Even when other member has uploaded an actual photo shot with the lens.

Since it is not our business to convince you that any brand's lens is good, choose what you like.

Have you tried the Leica-R 180 f2.8 Apo? I have this converted to alpha mount. Superb lens even at f2.8. No CA or fringing.

i've heard leica Apos are very nice, congrats! its way out of my budget now though. thanks for the suggestion =)

hey, i don't understand where all this animosity is coming from. i've had not-so-good experience with LOCA at the 200mm focal length, there's nothing in the lens literature to say the 200/4 tele tessar should be magically better just because of the CZ badge(no ed elements), and a couple reviews cite LOCA is an issue. i understand not all reviews are reliable, and thats why i post the question here.

i offer review opinion to see if it concurs with personal experience of anyone here; very different from exerting it as truth. the closest i 'optics acronym' i ve used is LOCA; certainly not often. I value the sample picture (solid colour and contrast) but it does not address my concerns at hand; this was expressed.

chill...

i don't have the resources to buy lenses at this price point just to try out. i hope you'd respect my need to find out more before committing.

Carl zeiss ultron 50mm f/1.8, the one with concave element.

this lens is quite phenomenal. its the only lens i ve ever used to give such amazing performance wide open and across the frame. its like shooting a normal 50 stopped down to f4, but then your actually shooting at 1.8.
heard about this lens before, this lens come in m42 mount right? is it better than summicron R 50 f2?

Voigtlander color-ultron 50/1.8. another one im working on. havent been able to mount it though, this one was taken by holding the lens infront of the cam.

I like the 1st shot for the wittyness, but the one with the Voigtlander is real nice for the b/w treatment as well as bokeh.
Any shots with these 2 lenses in color?

I would like to share a few photos from my Pentacon 135mm in PB mount (unchipped adapter, but with focus peaking in Magic Lantern)

yup. it's available in M42, but this one i have came in icarex mount. I'm in the final stages of the conversion, quite excited to finally get it all together. I've never used the summicron, so i couldn't tell you.

Beautiful shots!

Is the sonnar 85/2.8 the CZ or CZJ version?
Personally, I think nowadays, there is an over emphasis on fast lenses for fast sake or bragging rights.
Very often the slower f1.8 or f2.8 versions are so much more portable and ends up being in the bag more. :)

thanks =) its the Contax CZ T* version. i put up a picture of it on a nikkormat on the previous page. those were my exact thoughts! the 85/1.4s were all too expensive for me to justify, and too large to carry around. then i felt the 1.8s were still too large. this one is not only tiny, but has outstanding image quality str8 from 2.8. together with a 24 and 50, they make a really good compact kit.

Legendary DR Cron 50. If it could b used on d digital M. D prices will soar. Nice IQ. I prefer d Rigid Cron 50 though.

Rigid not for me, too rigid :-). This one more flexible and can go closer than any Leica 50mm (0.4m I think), that's where part of the fun is, to me. One of a kind lens, and I like the character. A more demanding lens, but when one gets to know it, one can deliberately make it flare or glow, or not at all, all depends on exposure and light, hood, filter.

It can be used on Leica M digital, people just send it to DAG for adjusting the mount. It depends how much desire one has to get it done, really not much cost, a Leica original hood and filter probably costs more. 1956 to 1968 lens and still serving well.

This is at very close focusing distance of almost 0.7m I got from the latest Summicron (or Summilux) on full-frame, it ends up basically half-body ...

Thanks for your info.
Kind of hoping it was the CZJ version.
If its the CZJ version, at least I can used it on the 5D and K30.
The Contax one, I'd have buy a Leitax adapter to use on a Pentax camera.....

I have a really nice and small Pentax M85/2, really small for a 85/2. About the size of a 50/1.4, but I don't have the courage to open it up for conversion for the 5D.
:sweat::bsmilie:

Just curious...Why do you have to open the lens up for conversion to fit on a 5D??? can't you just file down/hack saw off the black lens guard on the mount and slap on a K/EOS adapter and be done with it??? I have done that with other glass with no problems... The Nikon 28mm F2 comes to mind, if I recall correctly..;)

Now that would certainly angry the lens gods. :D

This is beautiful, perfectly focused and exemplifying the Zeiss 3D look. You took this lying down or the pigeons flew past your head?

thank you =) they were perching on the sign, and flew off as i approached them. i really enjoy the zeiss lenses cos the contrast is so snappy, like really deep blacks. though i always run into issues with clipped shadows if im not careful.

managed to do up the 2 ultrons! first 2 shots taken with a rokkor 50/3.5 macro, reset version (hence the funny colour)

Here is one with the C/Y Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 @ f/1.4. It is not as sharp or high-performing on measurements as the C/Y 50mm f/1.7 at all apertures (few lenses match it), but it has a nice old character to it. Deep depth of field, and this image was shot on an m4/3, near closest distance of 0.6m.
