Official Sony A7 or A7r discussion thread (Season II)

Here's a quick test i did from my bedroom window with the FE35mm.
Taken at F8 and F11.
I had to use the lens correction in ACR..if not the vignetting is quite bad even at F11..
Overall...i can't find this lens that soft in the corners? I dunno how to tell really..looks ok to me..

ha as i said earlier, i suspect is a qc problem/lens alignment issue with that copy i tried. alrdy sent in to sony ystdy.

if nothing wrong with your lens, nothing to worry about :)

I don't know whether it's my eyes. But the pictures seems to be out-of-focus; especially looking at the toilet window grilles and air-con grilles on the right side of the pictures. Or Chromatic Aberration occurs on these areas. Normally, at an aperture of f8 and f11, it should be sharp across the frame.

It doesn't look good but there could be a whole lot of reasons for this. For one, the lighting is flat. There is not enough local contrast and this will affect the eye's judgement on sharpness.

Well, i shot this through my window...everything was set to auto on the camera.. Wide AF, A priority, ISO160..if the camera didn't do a good job at metering and focusing..then the camera isn't very good :)
Maybe i just didn't do a good job capturing..it took just a few secs to do this :) no tripod, just hand holding..
maybe i should do a better test when i get to go out with the camera..

Normally for window shot like this (to casually test lenses on sharpness, vignetting and distortion) , I will use Manual Mode - Shutter Speed = 2-3x focal length (to prevent accidental camera shake when not using tripod), control my ISO to base level as much as possible - ISO 100. For good cameras like the A7, EV minus or plus 2/3 doesn't really matter as all these can be recovered/adjusted in ACR/CS6 easily.

Ok, i have RETAKEN the same shots in M mode.
I'm blaming the bad image on photobucket..i thought it doesn't compress images???
How come the jpg on my computer looks sooooo much different from what i see here and in photobucket?
It does look so out of focus and blur in photobucket but not on my computer!!!
i need to find a better place to upload test shots...i think even facebook is better quality than photobucket

Anyways, looking at the images on my computer screen..the corner sharpness is almost the same as the center at f8 and f11..
it's slightly softer and distorted in the corners but it's very minimal and you can't tell unless you zoom in 100% which i did..
Overall, i think this lens does work stepped down..

flickr is the way to go

Another sample that I got of the sensor reflection issue.

A7 Sensor reflection issue #2 by jenkwang, on Flickr

This is probably not beyond repair with a clone tool, just that it would mean more work.
Left by itself, its not totally unacceptable either, just a bit more distracting to me.

I have shared other shots from the same session in the image sharing thread and those are generally fine.
So far, its seems like with a session of about 5 compositions, I get one that has the issue that is obvious enough to make ppl 'home on' the issue.

hmmmm... so the corners on the full size flickr image looks the same as your FE35?

i just tried my friend's copy today and i have to say corners on his lens looks better than what i am seeing on mine. Anyway i have sent in the lens to sony keke.

btw my sigma 30 2.8, is sharper than this 35 FE in in on the left and right frame, even though it was not even meant to cover full frame! performance of the sigma at F4 is sharper than the sony at F8.

Hi, been away a few days so I missed the discussion. I've done a comparison using DXOMark's tool on sharpness of lenses comparing the 35FE on an A7r to the sharpest SLR lens available, the Sigma 35mm on a D800. Although they have a very similar sensor, the A7r's doesn't have an AA filter. For good measure, I threw in a "cheap" Nikon 35mm lens as well. This comparison was done at F2.8 for all lenses

The comparison shows that the 35FE and Sigma 35mm are quite similar in sharpness in the center. However, the Sigma pulls away in horizontal sharpness (the solid line) as you go to the corners although the difference is not huge. The comparison of vertical sharpness (the dotted line) is much closer.

At F5.6, the Sigma improves slightly and the Nikon by a huge amount, but the 35FE remains about where it was at F2.8

Overall, the Sigma 35mm seems a bit better overall but at 5x the weight and 4x the size, I wouldn't dream of using it on the A7r even though there is an A-mount version which would work with the LA-EA4. In the center, it's clear that both are quite sharp, but at 22/23PMP, they are not close to the 55FE's Otus like 29PMP. Still both are among the sharpest 35mm lenses on the planet with a slight edge to the Sigma.

As for the Sigma 30mm, it's a different FOV, but from DXOMark, when mounted on a NEX-7, it's slightly sharper in the corners than the 35FE or 35E1.8 It's barely perceptible though....

thanks for the indepth analysis hehe. the copy i have is probably a lemon copy, which i have already sent sony svc on monday. lets see what the technician says after looking at it and when it is ready for collection.
