Official Canon EOS 60D User Thread Part I

Eh, anyone considered if the softness of the photo is because it's in JPG and that the picture style was set to neutral or faithful or something "soft"? Even "standard" can be soft sometimes..need to tweak the setting sometimes…
Just my 2 cents worth...

Hi guys just bought my 60D not long ago,can anyone suggest some lens to use for normal outing with family.as well as some toddler shooting.i'm thinking of 18-135 and 17-55 would be good if you guys can share what lenses are good and value for money for the things I wan to shoot =]

You can try Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 instead.

Would this be a better choice when compared to the 17-55 from canon?

Not sure if it's better but it's definitely cheaper :)
Personally, for me, if you already have a kit lens..i'd go for something with more range? One of the best and cheap all rounder lens today i think is the Tamron 18-270 PZD? Seems like a lot of people like that lens for an all-in-one lens..if you only want to have 1 lens for everything

Comparable in terms of quality. Price is significantly cheaper if you opt for the non-VC version.

I can't speak for the Tamron as I've never owned it, but I do own the Canon 17-55 f/2.8. It is definitely more expensive but it is a top rated lens providing very sharp photos with good contrast and saturated colours. Many consider the optics to be equivalent to an "L" grade lens.

The other lens that you mentioned.... the Canon 18-135... is a consumer lens that takes good photos but is not rated nearly as highly as the 17-55. Many have complained about its sharpness. In fact, if you wanted to save money and still buy a very good sharp lens, the 15-85 would be a better choice over the 18-135.

No doubt the 1-55 is an L grade lens..it's only not L because it's EFS and not EF..
It's a great lens…one of the best…
BUT if you're only going to buy 1 lens, the range of a 17-55 might not be enough..
It's great it you're also going to buy maybe a 70-200 or something…
If you're only ever going to buy and own 1 lens..that's why i say, get a super telephoto…not the best quality but at least you get all the ranges covered from 18-270mm...

I agree. I own the Tamron 18-270 also and I use it exclusively for travel because of its convenience. The quality and sharpness is not to the standard of the 17-55 f/2.8 but it does produce very acceptable photos.

Atmosphere wise it think it was a tad hazy that day and I did try several apertures ranging from the minimum of the minimum but still resulting in similar quality. Though I don't think mine was causes by vibrations from wind and traffic because my place is in a rather undisturbed area of the neighbourhood and it was taken from my room which is more or less shielded from the wind. I still completely agree with you on that. i practice turning IS off on tripods too and the 50mm has no Is to speak of anyway and if I'm not wrong the shutter speed it was taken at should be high enough to prevent even hand shakes from me.

On the topic of the high megapixels I find having all 18 quite unnecessary too. Creates amazingly large file sizes even though I won't be printing or viewing it on huge cinema screens. So I reduced it to a 10mp raw and the file size dropped comfortably :) or I would have been filling up my sd card way too quickly! I can't comment much on the technical aspects though, I'm not an expert and I'll just leave the debate to the experts on the correct reasoning but now I'm still undecided lol

Outch! Wall of text :(
Thanks again for your help :) appreciate it very much!
Guess all I have to do is check the focus more thoroughly in the future :)

the 50mm f1.8 is known to have a little "freeplay" in its AF/MF accuracy.

It is one of the lens with least amt of weight to move while AFing. And because of this, I had to really play close attention to focusing since i am a macro goer. A light move on a tripod ballhead could change the AF position. The on-the-fly fix: to have its focus ring held to fix it position or a large fStop to compensate for the possible error.

Take note of your contrast settings on-cam or PostProc as this also have a contributive factor to your sharpness at the round-up action (sharpness is mostly done last after all other processing is performed.)

If budget permits, move up to a 2nd hand 50 f1.4 will save you a lot of workarounds.

It good to make a trip down to CSC or sent an e-mail to csc.See what Csc can response on this issue.
made it known to canon. there an issue of the adhersive been use.

Thanks guys. Went to CSC this evening...they said its a known issue with the rubber used for the grip (why don't they fix it from the factory??!!). Said they will replace the rubber.

How long will it take them to replace the rubber? Also noticed mine on the upper portion near the wheel , below the af button

It was super quick - the next day I got SMS that its ready. I called CSC to confirm that they replaced the rubber and not merely glued back the original one. Got it back, looks nice, hope it lasts :-). It depends if they have ready stock of rubber grip to replace.

Wow, I have been using for 4 months already and the only problem up till now it's the battery grip. =X Overall it's quite professionally built. Did a one full day video shoot and notice colour depreciation after 4 hours of straight video shooting. Anyone experience that? D:

I rread somewhre I think in the user guide that it's bound to affect the color quality for prolong use as it overheats.

That's for still images only. It says movie quality will not be compromised. Guide book page 173.

How much is the 18-270 mm lens?

But my happen on movie mode. And it's freaking huge. There's a thick green translucent line down my LCD the whole time I'm filming.

Good value for money? I vote for 15-85mm. You are getting a lot of bang for your 800 bucks (if buying second hand from BnS).

If you are getting more, here is what I gathered from reading many Clubsnap forum threads. For longer range, consider 70-200mm f/4L IS. For low light, try 50mm f/1.4. Total cost of these two is less than $2K. For tighter budget, forgo the IS on the 70-200mm f/4L and get the very affordable 50mm f/1.8 II. You save around $1K.
