Yes. But 550D built in mic is monaural. You can mount an external stereo mic.

any idea how much and how big that will be? :)

hey guys, is $140 for a brand new canon speedlite 270ex worth it?

Small & light, can bounce.
But, no AF assist light, which is a turn off for me. I do hope 270EXII have built in AF assist light. :(

that was also my drawback, so i went for 430exII instead. but $140 for 270exII is darn cheap. hope it's really bnew like it says it is.

AF assist of 270EX is like how pop-up flash assists AF, burst fire until AF confirm. they omit the infra red AF assist to make it smaller, that makes sense.

btw, i bought mine for just S$119 during the last IT Show.;)

pardon my noobility, but what does it mean when you said it can bounce? and how does would an AF assist light work on the flash? does it mean that it will AF on the spot that you focus on when shooting?

cool, it also has AF assist (via the flash itself, i presume).

by bounce it means you can change the angle of the bulb itself so you can "bounce" the light on ceilings and walls; thus making the light less harsh compared to shooting it directly at your subject.

for AF assist, when you half-press the shutter, the flash will emit short strobes of light so that your camera can focus on your subject better. for higher models, there's a separate red light for this purpose. for 230ex II, it's the flash bulb itself.

gurus, please correct me if i'm wrong as i'm also a noob :D

wow. very comprehensive. thanks alux!

Strobes are Pain for eyes. Waste of battery power as well. Shortage the flash tube life span as well. I would rather use on-board flash then 270EXII. Only advantage is more power than onboard and the ability to use bounce flash.

3rd party flash can do better, at a bigger physical price & cheaper price.

Sigh, if only Sunpak's small flash have AF assist....

THere is no 230EXII. The older 220EX uses the same flash tube as 270EX, just that 270EX can "zoom" to 50mm to extend guide no to 27m.
220EX has AF assist btw. but cannot bounce, plastic shoe mount... ARghhh...
