Nikon/Sigma or Tokina 12-24

Aiya just buy loh, both are OK but you may only see the problems after 3 years ???. :dunno: The extra amount that you pay for the Nikon probably goes to :-
1) The design
2) The optics and coating
3) The QC
4) The build quality
I am sure the Nikon will still be kicking after many years of usage but cannot say the same for a Sigma so the decision is yours.

to add on, even just mounting the cokin 82mm adapter i still see some vignette from the viewfinder of 20D, and it shows on the pic as well

loupgarou can vouch for that, i was trying on his cam

actually, the only filter worth putting on is the IR filter (!!!), since a hoya 82mm R72 would cost in excess of US 139 (that's the price of a hoya R72 77mm), I'm now working on a diy thing using ELP filters (check mo thread)...

in anycase, you can also buy Cokin X series filter and handhold in front of the filter element if you must, its just not elegant.

*and don't bother trying the Lee snap on filter holder, it just won't work /too small

would anyone make a fuss about this no-filter issue when buying a nikkor 14mm prime rectilinear?
Price difference? ;) 12-24DX vs 14mm (list) is $1980 vs $3250  ;)

They expect that if you spend that kind of $$$, you will know what to do. Even so, the 12-24 Sigma is wider than 14mm, both with 1.5 crop and full 35mm frame. The 2mm will give you what, 10-15 degrees difference in view? (Loupgarou, can help out here? ;)). That would affect the filter vignetting issue.

your point here?

i'm trying to say that BOTH lenses do not have a front filter mount. and i dont see anyone bitching about the nikkor's unprotected front element.

meaning if i spend less money on a sigma, i'm not supposed to know what i'm doing?

I was quite worried about the 'cyclops' eye of the lens initially, but after using it for a few days, i realised its not that bad lah. Just need to be extra careful (hey i am careful with all my lenses anyway). and best of all, it can be used effectively with film too!

on a 1.5x crop camera.
the FOV of 12mm-24mm = 90 degrees
the FOV of 14mm = 81.20 degrees
the FOV of DX 10.5 diagonal fisheye (dunno how to calculate)

hehe on a 1.6x crop camera
the FOV of a 10mm = 96.73 degrees
the FOV of a 12mm = 86.60 degrees..

is an extra 10 degrees a big deal? hmm.

actually, what do they expect you to do once you plonk down 3k for a lens that does not have a front filter mount.

(sigma has a 82mm front filter mount on the hood cap, but if you use it, you get vignetting up to 14-17mm (depending on slim filter or not) )

the reason why sigma's vignettes is because at 82mm, the filter ring enters the field of view of the lens itself, if you can redesign and make a hood +front filter mount at 86mm, you wouldn't even have this problem.

problem of course, is who can do this? and of course, buying a circ polariser or a hoya R72 IR is going to be killer $$$ at 86mm
