Hi, anyone can guide me on gear to get for my D5000.

I thinking of an external flash as kit lens dun work tt well for me in low light
1) SB600 or 700 which should i get

Also thinking of getting an additional lens. Not sure which of the following to get
1) F1.8 35mm DX Nikon
2) Tamron F2.4 17-50

Lastly, a battery grip.

P.S. do any of you have an idea how much these cost. I emailed Alan photo but they have not replied. =(

get the sb700. it has some features of the sb900 which i tink is pretty gd.

for the lenses, try setting ur kit lens to 35mm n shoot all the way without changing the focal length. if u dislike that, then the tamron will be a better choice. it will replace ur kit lens since it has a constant f/2.8 at all ranges.

Yup, sorry, i mean 2.8. Hmm, i see...got any idea on the price difference?..hahaha..

thks for all your help. I will try shooting with 35mm and see how is it.

35mm brand new goes bout 300+, 17-50mm non-vc goes for around 600+. it's like almost double the price, but it's a whole lot cheaper compared to nikon's 17-55 f/2.8

Bros,

What is full model name for tamron 17-50 /f2.8 which will fully compatible with/without VC with our D5000 body... :)

Thanks
Charif

Bro,

I"m newbie to DSLR.. I seeing many model in Tamron like SP AF 17-50mm F2.8 XR LD Aspherical (IF) . some have VC /BIm.
..
 Not sure whether which model is correct & support under our D5000. Since it don't have its own AF motor..

Hence, I'm asking to Pro like you. :)

New Nikon D5000 member reporting!! I finally got hold of the camera yesterday evening and was trying to update. This web site was down the whole night.

This is my first DSLR and will be clicking away to explore the features. Hope to learn from you guys and more tips. Next week will be busy looking for a dry cabinet. Not sure if I need any tripod but that can wait since I want to try shooting from more mobile locations.

Yo, welcome to the world of photography! A tripod is definitely important but can wait until you've mastered the basics of your camera.

A gentle rule of thumb is to buy something only when your existing gear's limiting you. Sadly it's a hard discipline to keep, the BBB virus is way too strong ;)

Hope you enjoy your stay here, the D5000 is a fantastic camera!

Hi everyone,

I'm intending to get a D5k camera.
I've asked around and many people have told me to buy from SLR Revolution at funan.
The price they quoted me is $928 for the kit, 18-55mm VR lens. comes with 8gb sdhc, bag, tripod and cleaning kit.
May I know if this price is reasonable? and may I know if the lens is enough for me? I'm a student and I just take pictures of day to day stuff..

Thanks!

Regards,
JiongWei :D

wow 928  it's 200+ bucks cheaper compared to when i bought it 1 year ago at 1.1k :bsmilie:

haf u tried asking from other shops in funan as well? such as john 3:16, alan photo, tk foto and cathay photo (located at peinsula plaza, juz next to funan)? i feel 928 is a gd deal. but haf to be sure wad the other shops r selling also. slr revo sell certain items at a more expensive price, like d300s. the price i paid for is 100 bucks cheaper compared to the price slr revo quoted to me.

it's better to go to trusted shops i had mentioned in my previous post. if u go to other shops like the one ur mom juz went, they might try to con ur money.

typical "chopping" procedure:
1) ask u to pay up first
2) after paying, then they start giving u excuses to raise the price like warranty need more money.
3) then they will lure u to get something which is totally crap, like the wide angle converter. they will tell u some bullcrap story, sayin this wide angle converter is gd n can save alot compared to buyin a brand new ultra wide lens. n they will over charge u for it.
4) then they will ask u whether u wan a filter for ur lens as protection. if u wan, they will give u some cheapo filter tat costs around 10 bucks n charge u for alot more.

by then u will be conned into paying another few hundred bucks more. so beware of those shops.

I had gone through the chopping procedure before in SLS:
1) First they offered a low price to lure the buyer.
2) Then they asked you to pay up first
But after that, I just went out the shop and left the shop and the shopkeeper speechless
3) And bought the accessories from other reputable shop
:bsmilie:

buying a camera is to enjoy. if one have to go through all sort of problems just to save a $100 or so, I don't think it is worth the trouble.

Of course, shopping around for best deal is also quite fun.

haha thanks guys!
that was what i thought too. cos, 899 from this shop not really heard of on CS, quite unbelievable, im probably going down to funan and take a look at john 3:16, ms color, slr revo and stuff. probably every shop i see. i don't mind paying a bit more for good svc :D

once again, thanks guys!

hahahaha my experience better. i went into one shop at sls, ground floor shop, ask bout the 35mm f/1.8 lens. then the sales was quite enthusiastic. tell me the price but it's more ex than wad i was quoted from shops in funan. then i went "wa so expensive". his face kinda turned sour. then i asked him for the price of 50mm f/1.4G, n he gave me an extremely low price tat i can't believe it (it was below 750) if i nv rmb wrongly. compared to the price guides in forum which is 820, i was like.. "sure anot??" then he became kinda pissed n i juz told him "kthxbai" n walked off :bsmilie: bet he was fuming.
