Good for Nikon, especially the D300, I've been suggesting to others to get D200 once in a while depending on what they need.

With D300, I'll be recommending this every time anyone ask me "which cam should I buy".

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Pro body 9fps FF dual CF near 1D pricing is steal. Especially when you compare to the stratospheric prices of 1Ds or the "consumer grade" build of 5D shooting at a leisurely 3fps.

I'm loving Nikon now... Canon has to drop prices... I wanna see a price war!
oh I really hope Canon drop the price of 1Dsmk3 to $8-9k region...as compare to Nikon...

then the 5D price worth around $2.5k~$3k...consumer grade...slow fps...but it still depend on the D3 noise control...

For that, you can wait until the next "upgrade" also won't drop price so much. 1Ds MkIII is Canon's cash cow, they won't simply drop price to such a wholesale level. ;)

I think you got the model wrong. THe FF model is call D3 and it costs USD$5K not the D300. The D300 is 6 FPS APS-C cam and only when you attach the battery grip, the camera will upgrade itself to 9 FPS. What a brilliant way to sell battery grips...

11fps no AF leh... or I dunnoe wat it means. :dunno:

Many still comment on "better camera still can't make you a better photographer & etc" but this thread is not about that, it's about the entry level and prosumer level users being short changed by Canon

If Nikon can offer so much more to their customers, why can't Canon? Use an anology of a car. Assume you pay X amount for a specific car and get those basic features and your friend pay just a little more but get a full state-of-the-art features. I'm sure you'll also be "si pek tulan" right?

That's why I'm "si pek tulan" with Canon's so called "we need to protect the interest of our 1-series professional customers" policy :thumbsd:

Fully agree with what you said!!! ;)

I feel that Canon always try to hold back the features that put into their non-1 series bodies or worse cripple certain key features for fear that they will eat into the sales of their 1-series bodies. E.g. no spot metering in their xxD bodies until 30D came, no full time ISO display in VF until 40D, 95% VF, etc, etc...They may be able to do these when competition is minimal but today competiton is fierce and they are losing market share in the biggest segments (i.e. non pro segments).

I am very glad that Nikon has released 2 landmark models. Hopefully, this will force Canon to give us meaningful upgrades in the semi-pro segment.

Although I use Canon gear,

I was pretty pleased to see the D3,
The ISO 25600 was definitely made possible because Nikon did not choose to go with megapixel race.

Hopes this will put pressure on Canon to stop wasting our time and milk cash from consumers,
and start producing much more respectable camera bodies with the amount of technological advancements they have.

And they better start producing much better better consumer lenses.
I mean, look at Tamron, Sigma, and Tokina,
they make pretty decent 3rd party lenses,
and they have been capturing the market of consumers who are low-incomed/thrifty.
Something which could have been capitalised on.

oh yah,
despite all that hoo haa,
Nikon is still using Sony's sensors.

So,
I bet Sony's next DSLR, FF or not, is gonna be interesting.
Definitely will affect the consumer market.

Nevertheless, the consumers still benefit from such competition.

It is believed the D3 uses a sensor designed by Nikon engineers. But it may go into a Sony DSLR.

EDIT:

At a press conference today in Tokyo, Nikon took the wraps off the D3, a new digital SLR that has at its heart a Nikon-designed full-frame 12.05 million image pixel CMOS sensor that....

Hmmm, from what I read, higher FPS means more battery consumption, hence it's logical to enable the higher FPS when using additional batteries (on grip).

I think the thought that will be lingering in Canon's minds and in creep into their dreams at night is "Nikon now has the World's fastest full-frame DSLR"... what... have... we... done... ??

This is going to haunt Canon management for quite a while... until we see a 1Ds Mark IIIn that is. Mannn... this is dammmnnn sad...

But unlike Canon's EF-S, DX lenses fit on the D3.

According to this post on Northlight Images (scroll to 18th Aug), the 5D2 will have the ability to use EF-S lenses as well to help the transition to FF. Most of the stuff in that post on 40D, 1Ds3 and IS is correct, so its credible that other stuff are real too.

What I really miss is a replacement for the 100-400mm F4-5.6. Nikon's 200-400 F4 is way too expensive.

Effect on Canon? Definitely there will be effect. The competition between the two goes way back into the film era when I was not even born yet ;p

For the past year or so, Canon DSLR sales has been hit hard first by the D80 which has better specs than the 400D, followed by D40/D40X with their attractive pricing over the 400D and now the D300 which has trump almost every feature that the 40D has.

However I believe Canon with its reputation as the world's biggest digital camera maker at stake will fight back soon enough. Rumored end of this year, they will be launching a semi-pro DSLR which most people believe is the 5D MkII. This will rival the D3 in terms of pricing and features (I hope so). Next year in march, the replacement for the 400D would be out and I do hope they do not cripple the functions and give it all it got.

By the way, to all Nikonians, congrats on the launch of two wonderful camera :) Competition is the way to improve.

Agreed, when I used 10D and 20D, I used one in the middle and the either corner pt only...even when I used 1D mk2 , 1D mk2n and mk3 which have 45 pts but I never use more than 2 pts...hahaha...I prefer the pt appear only when u select it not just cover the whole frame...so messy...:)

haha.. good one.. me same same also... ;)
