so this telephoto zoom is good for distant stealths ... impressive

very impressive

good for paparazi work

To all the bros who have this lens: How do you check for front/back focusing for this lens for all focal ranges? I have never had such a long zoom.

Also, (this may be a dumb question) but does the lens make a rattling sound when you shake it (when not mounted)?
Reason why I am asking, I am an ex-canon-fanboy and this is my first foray into the dark side and all of these are new to me.

Thanks!! :D

same as you would like to focus test the old D70 here:
http://focustestchart.com/chart.html

btw, i have not tested mine. let me know if your lens is ok. Nobody complains about focus alignment problem for this lens. So i cant be bothered to test mine. you probably need a big room to test at 300mm :D

Thanks for the link. However, I am too lazy to print out the focus sheet (weekend, no access to company printer.. heh!) so I just did the basic battery test. 3 batteries placed around 2-3cm apart.

Here are the results. Not too bad..

70mm f4.5 DOF not shallow enough to show any visible results.

135mm f4.5 getting there.. You can now see the middle battery standing out from the other two.

240mm f4.9 Sharp middle battery and the rest are blurred

300mm f5.6 Had to move back to keep the framing. You can clearly see the focus is spot on..

Don't mind my primitive testing methods. But this is good enough for me to say: This lens is a keeper for me!! @_@

Edit: Oh btw, the test was done in my kitchen with some daylight coming in, handheld with VR on. NO tripod was used or harmed in this test.

Hi Bro Axela, which shop? I have called AP, they quote me like more than 800 w GST.....

I guess this is the long lens for me la - 101% convinced with the pictures posted here.

Noticed that there are currently 3 threads on this lens. Wonder why? This ain't a brand new lens that is just launched......., yet, there is still so much interest in it.

Try John 3:16. Got it for 780. Not the cheapest but  service when buying and :thumbsup: aftersales service.

Indeed a great lens to play with. Will look forward to mount it on a D700 to get the pictures at high ISO. Very impressed. Looks like the D700 will be a good camera to use at the F1 race in Singapore with this 70-300 lens. Unfortunatelty I will not be there.

How does this lens compare to the 70-200 f/2.8 VR?
Thinking of getting the 70-300mm instead because of the longer reach, not to mention much cheaper cost. :)

i would say it's a different class altogether. The aperture spell the big price difference.

Not to mention heavier in lens and price!:D

Since you have the D700 and the 70-300mm, can I ask if it could be used for shooting performances with aperture setting of f/5.6 at 300mm? I don't mind so much the cost of the 70-200mm f/2.8 but am just afraid that 200mm is not sufficient reach for this purpose.

May be TC 14 or TC 17 may solve your problem(Be prepared to pay more as they are not cheap stuff)

Thanks. I took your word on it and immediately went and got one for myself.

These are a couple of test pics fresh out of my new lens. ;)

I must say that the VR really work very well in this lens to let me take these shots handheld.

It also makes a good combo with the D700 because of the good high ISO performance of the D700. Even though I can't open up the aperture, it should still be possible to get very useable shots in indoor performances by upping the ISO levels, assisted by the very effective VR of the lens. :)
