Heard USA cheaper than HK, anyone bought from there? any recommended shops in west coast, california areas?

Wa, this is a damn killer poison prediction.
Even if it does, i think it will not be in the same price range as the current 70-300 vr.

Not only US is cheaper. Sometimes it gives longer warranty too. Envy envy. Lets just move to USA. We could buy more gears ;p

Hello CSers!
I just got this lens yesterday, tested some stills outside my place using normal vr, and the images were tact sharp from 70mm to 300. The detail resolved is quite surprising wide open.

Today, I went on a bus safari, so since I was in the bus, I engaged the Active mode of the VR.

Unfortunately, all my pictures on the came back with a slight blurness :( Looks like I can't print these large sigh. Should be fine for web use.

Did not take any shots on the bus with the mode set to Normal, so can't say. I did take a few shots off the bus set to normal vr; as expected they were awesomely sharp. Any ideas or recommendations when to use the active VR?

NB: My usual technique for shooting with longer tele (cough my 55-200) is usually to set my shutter to about 1/250 and let the exposure be varied by iso and aperture. Today, since I was shooting mostly at 300mm, I used a shutter between 250-500 on the bus; all were slightly blurred. GAH.

PS: I got this in Adelaide, AU for AUD725 from Photographic Wholesalers. After gst rebate should be about AUD 660.

I guess this has got nothing to do with VR. Your subject was in motion, so unless you use much higher shutter speed to freeze the motion, you will still get blur pictures. Try shooting when the bus is stationary, but with engine on, with some vibration.

How about try the reverse. You stand at the road side and shoot a moving bus passing by! Unless you use shutter speed like 1/1000s or thereabout, and still got to do some panning, and then, tell us the results......

So far, we have pics of birds, cats, temple and so on, now here are some people pics taken recently with this lens :

Hi!
I was on a catamaran today shooting the coastlines and dolphins.

Using my same technique, but this time with the vr set to normal all the time, my pictures came back nearly as sharp as on land. So I'm happy :)

I also did a test where I switched between normal and active vr, shutter @ 1/350.

The vr set to active definitely is less sharp. I took 2 normal, 2 active shots, 100% crops are very obvious. Looks like I won't be using active vr, at least for the way I shoot :)

Thanks for your suggestions :)

Alvin

PS: When on the bus, I only shot when the bus was stopped, but had the engine running. It's kinda impossible to even frame the shot @ 300mm on an unpaved trail ;)

Oh, when I did the vr normal/active test, I was on the catamaran when it was not moving, so was able to shoot the same target while the waves tossed us around. Very happy with today's shoot :)

I need some advice from the owners here. Do you think this is a good lens to shoot F1?

I have a burning question to be answered:

Is it possible to use the 70-300vr on a manual film camera (eg. FE2)? I know the aperture cannot be adjusted but the metering still works. But will the aperture be at the max?

no, aperture will be f22, G lenses the aperture lever is just held up during focussing, but when shooting the aperture releases to f22.

I see...bummer...:sticktong

I'm considering either the 80-200 or 70-300vr...
