Newbies Outing (Part 13) - 21 July Marina Bayfront Area Photos

This image should do fairly well as a B&W... there are highlights, midtones and shadows. However. I might tweat this photo to have more highlight particularly the rays. Composition wise.... fairly ok except for a cutoff building on the left.
Thanks CT! Yeah, i tried to get the rays to be brighter so i can get more contrast with the sky but my pp skill sucks :( How do you propose to tweak the pic? I was looking at some online resources and was thinking of maybe using dodge/burn? Never done it before haha, just read about it last night :embrass:

applying the rule of third may probably be of a problem as poses by this vantage point but if you do it, it will be great.

I like the the colour and contrast of #1. Is this pp?
#2 got a bigger image? :)
Yeah it's not easy to compose properly from the skypark due to the glass barrier and the wires. Haha, like I said, my pp skill sucks.. still waiting for a photoshop/other pp gathering-cum-outing ;p
For all my pics, I normally just adjust the curve, maybe play around with the saturation/vibrance bar and use unsharp mask. That last bit also just learned from Kevin like 2-3 weeks ago. Until now not sure what's the exact value to use for the amount, radius and threshold. I used the traditional 'try and error' method :embrass:
How big do you want the #2? Hehe, if you want the original size or raw, PM me your email haha. Because my flickr is the free one mah, maximum 1024x680.

Some homeworkz from a newbie 1st outing ~ Thnks for organising such a wonderful outing ~ !!

MS1of1-3-1.jpg

I was worried about the picture looking too blue, with the sky and MBS.
Just curious what is your white balance setting?

I like this one, well toned :)

If you want get a focus on the Fullerton, two suggestions that I can think of at the moment is you shoot in portrait mode or you zoom in close to isolate it completely.
PS. just realised that my suggestions are actually 'illustrated' by Gaowei's photos haha.

Thanks korbidp3k!

I can see that this is a highly cropped photo. There is a noticeable lower IQ in this compare to your other photo. Basically I like the way this photo is composed but it didn't work out for me as there is a lack of highlight in this photo.

Thanks for your comment coolthought. Not too sure about the highlight and how its work out. Will go check it out. :D

Erm... u mean these?
Yup, i like the #7.. if the bottom part can be slightly brighter then

2) The "ship" standing in the sky

Me likey this one the most haha. Like some has suggested, it has a great potential.
I like #5 too. I think you have a good eye.
PS. So, which tripod are you getting? j/k haha.

#1 overheating, undercooling

#2 cosy cooling sundown

For #1, I can't tell what is focus of the picture, sorry. The chopped buildings and boats on the left and right makes it hard to see in my opinion >.< and yes, it does feel soft to me.
For #2, nice timing, you got the blue hour. I personally I prefer not to cut off the reflection in the water, though.

I like the mood and the gradation of blue sky in this picture. However, I feel the composition can do a bit more work. By panning a bit to the right, you won't get the chopped building on the left and you will get both esplanade 'durians' instead of only 1.5. Good attempt nonetheless. :)

Nice shots

There is a "Clarity" slider in lightroom. That is the best. You can even add a clarity in a graduated way. That is how I do my clouds in the sky... (my secret kungfu move).

In photoshop, you can only adjust clarity in Adobe Camera RAW, when you import the RAW files.

darn... so much to learn ;p

I like this one the most bro Ding

Finally just managed to get to check in.
Finally, like to put on record, my gratitude and thanks to Jacob, coolthought, estherfu, and korpidp3k! Couldn't pull off this outing which was separated into 2 groups without you all!
Cheers!
Cheers bro! Thanks a lot for organizing this outing :)

One more thing to add to my Outing Report.
Up at Skypark, my cell reception was bad, very bad. Had dropped calls, and even smses had to be resent several times. An M1 subscriber BTW.
Just something to take note of in future.
Yeah, not just M1. I use Singtel and my phone couldn't get a signal sometimes.

I have to apologize for not being to talk to every one of you, especially those in group 2. My sincerest apologies. Also as age catches up, tend to forget names more easily. Hehehe. Please help to put the nicks/names to the persons that I couldn't account for or sincerely do not know your nicks/names.
Thank you very much.
Correcting typo in my name :)

Hi Adrian
So this is the photo you talked about... what a precious moment.
Early bird does catch the worm
Thanks :) The sky is very unpredictable. Before this, the sky was dull and hazy so I wasn't expecting good shots.

I really love this pic! This is so Beauuutiful ~ I wonder whn will I get this kinda effect ..hmm
Thank you. You will get it some day :) I was quite lucky with the timing. Didn't go to the outing expecting to get this shot haha.

Ok, this is so far my vote for "Shot of the Day"! The lightrays is the clincher. I need to put on my sunglasses to admire it fully.
Thanks bro :)

5) Viewing from the skypark..

6) Sun setting..

7) The nice round sun :)

8) The buildings finally light up!!

Finally, some close up...

5) Interesting way of using the lower deck as your foreground. However, you might want to explore further to further better the composition.

7) This is a reasonably well exposed shot. With the bright sun in the photo, the buildings still remain fairly well lit. For me, I probably will shoot this in portrait so that I can include more of the nearest building. Which you can get a nice layering effect. Building nearest will be clearest. You can still pp to increase clarity and contrast.

Generally, you will probably want to observe the rule of thirds for your 6,7 and 8.

Wah, teach me the secret kungfu move please! ;p It piqued my interest, was wondering what does clarity mean in photographic context so I googled it ;).

The Clarity slider affects the contrast in the midtones in the image. It works by increasing some of the edge detail in the midtones giving a general sharpening which adds punch to your photo.

These images taken from the top that I have seen so far has a better balance than most. However, do watch the rule of thirds.

Nice shots

By panning more to the right n chopping off the building is a great idea. But .... u will be seeing those construction works going on, which they are juz situated next to us ~

It was set to tungsten and the pic was taken at the time whr the sky is the bluest ... ~
