apologies for replying late.

Just imagine a see-saw.... if you put something on the left side, it will tilt left and to balance it, you need something of similar "weight" to balance it. Such "balance" does not always apply and depending how you want the photo to "feel"....

Generally, your photos looks more balance. You chose to include Raffles city and whole of esplanade in your photo which nicely balance out the "weight" of the building in Shenton way on the left hand side.

PS. korbidp3k #3 photo is also nicely "balanced".
PPS. I can see the road next to the esplanade that can be a nice lead in line for the photo... which no one uses....

In addition to that, there's also the vertical aspect of balancing. For myself, once I got used to the horizontal left-right balancing, it's easier to see how the top-down also needs to be balanced, and they work in conjunction with each other.
