Newbies Outing (Part 13) - 21 July Marina Bayfront Area Photos

#1: Rays of light

Ok, this is so far my vote for "Shot of the Day"! The lightrays is the clincher. I need to put on my sunglasses to admire it fully.

Maybe just adjust the white balance during shoot or PP. Seems a touch too blue? May look nice warmed up and increase the contrast a tad as well.
some tweaking will probably enhance it, but it's a shot that's on the right track nonetheless! :D

I searched the 30 June outing and you didn't post any photos (notti notti... :sticktong). Was trying to compare photos.
Looks like your series of shots were well done. Nice n sharp and well exposed. I like this one above. Good use of the tilt to fit the tall buildings in (i'm guessing you already shooting at widest), whilst also including the couple for sense of depth.
thumbs up!

Sorry sorry.. didn't know need to submit homework :P

Thanks for the comments :)

Liked your #2's perspective! I think more colors can be drawn out from the photo.
I actually took your pic to do some enhancements. (w/o your permission. Sorry!). I'll post if you give the green light.

Please post!!! I also want to see how my pic can be enhanced :)

Finally just managed to get to check in.

Outing report

  • Reached MBS just after 5, no queue, no problem with tripod, even if it was slung across my chest. Had advised the group going up to keep their kit small, restrict it to a camera + lens, tripod, and filters. But seems some people were able to get through with more, even saw someone shooting next to us with a Canon 70-200 L white telephoto zoom! So you can easily get away with quite a bit.
  • Afraid weather may not be working for us, as it was cloudy, but later on, we managed to get good pictures. Won't say it's the most ideal, but yeah, quite okay.
  • Thought would have more space to move around up at the Skypark, but the 2nd tier was being renovated for that felon chef, so we were quite cramped to a small corner.
  • Being early really pays homage to the adage, "Early bird gets the worm". For several of us who came earlier to the Skypark, we had good opportunities to capture God's Rays ... wonderful, but still not the best I feel (my pics I mean). Also, those who came at 6 had to queue up, whereas some who were a few minutes earlier, walked in to the ticketing counter very easily.
  • Too bad I didn't shoot enough, particularly night shoots as had to volunteer my tripod for a member who was tripod-less, fearing the security-type people not letting tripods through. Nonetheless, no excuse for myself not to shoot any. Most were handheld and as such, all had shakes. Nvm, will go up and shoot again :)
  • Had Adrian (korpidp3k) who was definitely a good and patient guide and about time we promote him to senior :) Also, hoped that the participants to this group or even outing, had picked up something more from before the event. So, thank you very much for taking the effort to turn. For those who couldn't make, sorry you couldn't join us, but there are other priorities in life, so don't worry, it's not like the Skypark will be closed soon. You'll have opportunities to shoot either by yourself, or with a group soon.
  • During dinner @ Marina Square's food court, had the opportunity to share our gear and skills (I hope) with the rest and hopefully, those who are using freebie-tripods will consider getting a more solid one to support your expensive investment. And also picked up the main reason why we are organizing such outings - to share and give back what we had learned from other seniors and gurus.
  • Finally, like to put on record, my gratitude and thanks to Jacob, coolthought, estherfu, and korpidp3k! Couldn't pull off this outing which was separated into 2 groups without you all!
That's all.

Cheers!

PS: Pictures to follow. And apologies for being long winded. Oh yeah, Jacob, me not big boss! Just big ... hehehee!

 AND  to ding. i missed a lot of outing. hoping will be join to all of you soon.

wa a lot of nice photos. I noticed that most of the photos posted have very sharp images, but mine looks really soft. Wat is the main reason that results in the photos being soft?

wa a lot of nice photos. I noticed that most of the photos posted have very sharp images, but mine looks really soft. Wat is the main reason that results in the photos being soft?

a number of factors for the photos to be SHARP:

1) steady tripod
2) accurate focus
3) aperture at lens' "sweet spot" of sharpness, which is usually stopped down
4) sufficient depth of field so that most elements are in focus.
5) some sharpening done in post-processing.

Usually it's most or all of the above :D
hope that helps!

Took a look at your shots. Seem acceptable to me. The reasons for softness are many:

1) Did you use a tripod?
2) Did you stop down your lens for greater dof?
3) How did you trigger the shutter?
4) Did you apply sufficient unsharp mask during PP?
5) Was there wind/vibration up there when you were shooting?

LOL! ZCA and I answered the question at the same time. Seems like he supplied the answers to my questions! :bsmilie:

Just the ordering slightly different but you get the drift.

Thanks for the advices! Photos are straight from camera as i do not know how 2 do any post processing yet lol. Could you explain wat do you guys mean by stopping down the lens?

shoot at smaller aperture, eg. f/8 or f/11 instead of the widest.
Usually lenses are sharper at that aperture, especially for kit lens, etc.

jeezuinn, your pics are not soft la. Just that there is some sort of haze that day, What you can do is to boost the "blacks" of your picture, and add some "clarity" and your pictures will come out very nicely.

i'm guilty of commenting without first searching for the pic. Lazy ;p

God's Rays!

Missed this earlier. Nice rays.. I think maybe the only way was to do a closeup telezoom shot, but that kinda leaves the picture without anything else to hold it.

Dunno how korbi did his. I must learn from him!

There is a "Clarity" slider in lightroom. That is the best. You can even add a clarity in a graduated way. That is how I do my clouds in the sky... (my secret kungfu move).

In photoshop, you can only adjust clarity in Adobe Camera RAW, when you import the RAW files.

You have a nice pic, with lots of potential..
I've always enjoyed this type of perspective shot and have wanted to try my hand at it..;)

A very good learning experience for me =)

Good attempt. Just take note of the horizontal line.
