Eh , let's keep the SG vs MH stuff out of this thread la.

More pings... the trail might be getting warm finally, just as the battery dies..

Why do they use handheld device from a rubber dinghy ?
The big ship engine produce lots of noise and make it difficult to hear the weak signal from black box.
The frequency of the beacon signal is well defined, all it needs is a filter to cut off the frequencies of the noise.

This outperforms the two shown below. A simple microphone extended on a metal pole and dipped a few inches below the water surface from a raft.
Time for Pentagon and UK MOD to think of Price / Performance Ratio. On second thought, can it be true?
Unless for some reason, parties operating much more expensive + technologically advanced equipment DON'T want to find something.

A spare pinger on the boat might have sent the signal.
In video of the Haixun 01, it appears the Chinese had a spare pinger in the boat.
Anish Patel, president of pinger manufacturer Dukane Seacom, says it is not recommended to have a pinger near the area where you are trying to listen.

Sorry I don't think so.

First things first.

Show
me the video " it appears the Chinese had a spare pinger in the boat". Where?
Haixun is a not a boat.
It is a rescue ship. Maybe the writer cannot tell the difference.

"
appears" suddenly become fact and a reason to advance a point of view.

Why would the PRC need to carry a spare pinger on the ship?

I think the writer got confused. He can see a small tubular pinger from a video of the ship Haixun?

The pinger is NOT the black box.

The pinger is a small tubular device on one side of the black box.

Although this case may be a false lead and end up with nothing, the writer is implying that the PRC Navy is stupid.

37.5 kHz is well within the auditory hearing range of dolphins (< 160 / 150 kHz).

Should just send some of them to help out even if the true purpose is solely for Public Relations (PR).

U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program (NMMP) bottlenose dolphins searching for underwater mines.

Sarah Bajc got the idea.

That is how a cheap microphone on a steel pole, placed few inches below the water surface can outperform Poseidon P8 and HMS Tireless submarine.

Another guest expert on either BBC or CNN commented that in this investigation --- Boeing, Rolls Royce and Inmarsat are taking part.
He commented that they are the interested parties who should be the subject of investigation.

Analogy is to get a group of suspects to determine the cause of a crime and have final say on who (if any) is guilty.
Another analogy is to let students mark their own examination papers and determine the grade.

This is such a biased world!
The chinese heard it first and now their credit is being washed down by the angmohs, uttering nonsense such as "they hv another pinger onboard". Shxx!
And the Oz is shining in limelight/newspaper headlines that they heard the "most promising lead"?! @#*?!*^#@

Well, people will remember before the Chinese found the first ping , all the other countries somehow simply couldn't find anything.

And of course the interesting observation that the Chinese team reported back to the authorities in a China, not the search party heads (Malaysia).

The Australians have the lead in the search mission. The rest is standard obedience, as it is quite common also in SAF.
But anything is better than to report to the coconuts in KL.
