It's a cycle.. According to my dad (born in '55), SLRs were really 'hot' during his time (late 60's-70's)...
It would be one of the first things they started to save for once they started work.

There was even less to do in Singapore in those days. They'd go out with friends and just pose, take photos together.
I believe him because there's plenty of pictorial evidence to prove that :lol:

I have felt the same on certain occasions, but the fact of the matter is... anyone has the freedom to do whatever they want with their money.

To bemoan the fact that someone who buys a Ferrari for his mother to drive from their hdb flat to the wet market is 'lacking the true spirit of motorsports' is ultimately pointless.

I know a couple of uncles (friends' dads) with the latest, greatest gear... their shots are well, average... but well, they can afford it, and it's a fun hobby for them! I used to get frustrated with them, but don't see the point in that anymore. Just don't ask me to look at their photos

i have no problem with youngsters taking up photography, since i feel it is a really healthy hobby, to walk around with ur friends and shoot some street candids is much better than hanging out in the pub, smoking, drinking and causing public nuisance.

Of course like all other hobbies, there bound to be some black sheeps in them who are just here to spoil the photography image by abusing their gears and giant zoom lens which they got from their parents to shoot the opposite sex in a... displeasing way. :thumbsd::nono:

I must admit honestly when i look at youngsters with high end equips, ex. white lens, 1D, D3 on the streets i do have a split second of jealousy anger, just like seeing some young boys driving Ferrari to school back in my days. Well their parents have the money, and they are proud to show off how rich is their family, just leave them alone. :bsmilie:

I must say, among all these youngsters, there are those with real talents. I can't help to agree with zoossh, there are people like zemotion/zhang jingna around who makes me go wow! with their photos :thumbsup:

do whatever you want, just be responsible, and dont spoil the image of our beloved hobby, photography.

if they are showing off, it's their business.

its just a way of showing off their ego.

So what if it's a D700 ? Sometimes, its the person behind the camera that capture good pictures.

yes, technically , D700 is a good body. If you have a good eye for composure , i think any entry level body will do.

anyway, with more ppl buying dslr, its actually quite good for this...'trade'...in the sense that new talents might be uncovered. down side is if they're rich, and they go for their first photoshoot with a super high end camera and ultra expensive lens...envy mahhh.....:dunno: its an expensive hobby. see how long so many can follow thru lor.

The guy with the analogy of the ferrari is spot on. When you're driving your Toyota and seeing a teenager with a Ferrari Enzo zoom past, most of us will get really pissed off and start blaming heaven/Jesus/Buddha for not giving us rich parents. It's inevitable. What is annoying is when people get very high and mighty and assume that youngsters are in it to be hip, as if they themselves are super artistic seasoned experienced professionals.

I seriously doubt any male who owns an SLR would use liveview to shoot all the time. I bet he was a FRIEND of the owner of the camera who borrowed it for fun. I lend my friends, total newbies, my camera once in a while and they do funny stuff like what one of the mods said, asking why is the screen black, and how to take picture. If a passer by were to see, they would assume my friend was one of those fad chasers who bought a camera but don't know how to use?

As for those who laugh at people who buy SLRs without knowing what it is, some people just learn hands-on better. There are people who can't understand theories from just reading, they are better at experimenting with real stuff, so why begrudge them when they choose to buy first and then learn from the real camera? This is why there are polys, ITEs and JCs, catering for different learning styles.

teenagers nowadays just do not understand the true use of DSLR. i once saw a malay female asking a sony salesperson at the comex, 'How many mega pixel this cam has? have smile shutter?'

'er.. no smile shutter, and it's 14MP'

'no smile shutter? nvm... i'll get one'....... sales: 'er..do you want the body only or with the 18-70mm kit'

'what's 18-70, and what body only? nevermind, just get me one ' (moral of the story, she don't even understand lens let alone shutter and aperture. so why does she still wants it??? the A350 kit costs 1.3k...)

i shutted my ear after that sentence cause sony salesperson still drilling my heads. and when i went to the counter, saw her paying for it.

In another case, I saw teenagers strolling in groups, boys and girls (boys carrying the dslr), and they were shooting all the way, towards the sun and away from the sun w/o adjusting shutter or f-number, and they were using live view all the way!!! (obviously using the DSLR as a PS camera).

Conclusion, there are teens out there using DSLRs as PS cameras, not using it to the fullest extend of creating quality image. instead of capturing time and moment, teens are using more of show off to friends, etc.

That's just sad. BTW shooting against the sun or towards the sun doesn't mean you need to adjust shutter/f-number does it? Maybe he's on aperture mode and wants a specific depth of field? But pure liveview is really just sad too.

I agree with the your point of not every image needs RoT to take fantastic image. Not every image needs to use RoT

But it's the basic in photography. There are teenagers out there misusing the true spirit of DSLR photography and using as PS cameras. i've seen them and know some of them. i personally looked at their photos and advised them to sell their D3s and get some PS cameras.

and with regards to losing sight of my DSLR, that's anybody's personal matter and reasons to do so. I bought my A350 for 1300 SGD and i know how big a hole it has burnt in my pocket.:cry:

D3 to play play. Maybe those teenagers are really pros when they want to be. D3 can be used to play play as well.

I am guilty as those that pick up photography because of the low price of DSLR nowadays. I think, photography instills responsibility, responsible for the photographs you take, responsible for your camera and lens.
