is "photography" becoming a fad?

Photography is becoming a staple diet like rice. Can goreng, make into porridge, turn dumpling, add sweet black soya sauce with fried egg.... mmmm doughnuts....

Bravo! what about the people who don't care a dam about learning photography
even though they can afford to sustain the hobby?

Simply it is just ignorant to the great and unknown benefits that could be gained
by slowly and deeply involved in this art and science of imaging.

Lets celebrate and three great Cheers to all those who just jump into this fad which
will be very staple and everlasting.

Cheers to all photographers with this great passion of expression.

the influx of people interested in photography will be a boon also to all the people who teach courses, organise workshops, sell equipment, and of course people will become more visually trained and have better appreciation of the labours and skill involved in photography

Lol is it really effective? I'd think it wouldn't help control the tilting of the camera and how it moves from side to side. Only prevents it from moving up and down :bsmilie:

there are people who create stunning pictures with a PnS that can't even be compared to some people who are using the highest end most expensive DSLR.

like age, there are 13 year olds who are taking mind blowing pictures that can put many older photographers to shame.

i think age isn't an issue at all, and fads exist among every age group.

i can't help but notice that there is an increased sighting of people (of adolescent age)
lugging their DSLRs over their necks in town. They are usually in groups, hanging around, walking around, socialising, "partying", window shopping, people watching, chatting etc, doing everything except shooting. They are usually spotted with the entry line DSLRs such as 1000D, 450D, D40, D60. This could be due to the lower cost of owning a DSLR, greater awareness on photography, increased support from educational institution, or even clubsnap. It just reminds me of the good old marina/centrepoint kids days (w/o the fancy DSLR of course) but with a new gadget.

No pun intended in this msg, just like to voice out something which i noticed.

is there anything wrong with people getting a camera to do anything but shoot? for all you know, they could be superb street photographers.. grabbing shots without you even realising it. :devil:

teenagers nowadays just do not understand the true use of DSLR. i once saw a malay female asking a sony salesperson at the comex, 'How many mega pixel this cam has? have smile shutter?'

'er.. no smile shutter, and it's 14MP'

'no smile shutter? nvm... i'll get one'....... sales: 'er..do you want the body only or with the 18-70mm kit'

'what's 18-70, and what body only? nevermind, just get me one ' (moral of the story, she don't even understand lens let alone shutter and aperture. so why does she still wants it??? the A350 kit costs 1.3k...)

i shutted my ear after that sentence cause sony salesperson still drilling my heads. and when i went to the counter, saw her paying for it.

In another case, I saw teenagers strolling in groups, boys and girls (boys carrying the dslr), and they were shooting all the way, towards the sun and away from the sun w/o adjusting shutter or f-number, and they were using live view all the way!!! (obviously using the DSLR as a PS camera).

Conclusion, there are teens out there using DSLRs as PS cameras, not using it to the fullest extend of creating quality image. instead of capturing time and moment, teens are using more of show off to friends, etc.

you have the right to judge them, and to feel that they are not maximising their money

but letting yourself get upset over it? heh heh heh. it's their money, they don't maximise it, that's their problem - or their parents'. everyone has diversions; while i frown on people buying a dslr when they don't understand photography, i won't lose any sleep over it either.

what's new with teenagers? before dslrs there were branded wallets, there were branded bags, there were a lot of other expensive diversions. just because someone else who doesn't know how to use a dslr is using a dslr does not take away my joy in using one, nor does it affect my photography (unless i'm an events shooter, perhaps) - why should i begrudge them the right to purchase? :dunno:

I just heard someone see a young chap (teenager) with a EOS-1Ds Mk.III slung around his neck. Power! :thumbsup:

But like some people here say, no need to stress lah. There are people here who are born with platinum spoons in their mouths. Don't say camera. Quite a number are even driving fancy cars, while some others spend thousands of dollars on fashion items. This group of people got tremendous spending power, because well, it's not their money, what.

It's just the way things are. So be it, no need to fret, no need to envy.

However, fads don't last. Now people are so well informed, most of us who would know that just because you got a damn big camera around your neck, it don't really mean nothing at all. Many of the "real" photographers I know of don't walk around Orchard Road with expensive cameras on them.

true haha. imo time will tell over time. without passion, even a D3 would be left collecting dust at some rich kid's storeroom.

but i guess the main concern would be them learning about ethics on photography.

Aiyah... everyone has to start from somewhere; they just need to choose their starting point.

For me: learn about technicals of camera first then narrow down to brand then model
For some: just take short cut and ask the sales person

For me: choose entry level first, learn composition and technics then see if need upgrade
For some: go for the best camera, then hope to produce good compositions

For me: see what type of photography I really interested in taking before I invest in lens and maybe camera
For some: go for the lens first then try to create situations to use them

For me: $$$ hard to come by, so need to be careful how I spend :sweat:
For some: $$$ no problem, so spend first worry later

For me: nothing wrong with my thinking
For some: nothing wrong with their thinking
