I don't know about you guys, but I know why I have that problem.

I shoot handheld. Had to compose picture, then put the R72 over lens with the other hand, half press shutter for focus and exposure then shoot. So I usually get my horizontals slightly off. :bsmilie:

Here's one with corrected horizontal, does it look straight ark19?

Those two shots are taken by the same camera - Coolpix 950, without setting any CWB. They looked different because they were post-processed differently. The first was post processed to look like Kodak Ektachrome EIR professional IR slide film while the second was done normally.

I brought both my 20D and Coolpix 950 along for the shoot and since I have to use the tripod anyway, I took normal shots too so that I could carry out the Kodak EIR post-processing if I wanted to later on.... like these...

Those post-processed normally but with more colours were taken with the 20D which was CWBed with an Expodisk. The Coolpix does not require CWB for IR photography.

did u modify your Cp950?

the false color ones are taken with 2 different shots and layered is it?
i was reading it before...but couldn't figure out since my PS skills is limited as well

i love the red foilage as much as white

anyways i have yet to shoot IR with my d70

tomcat,
Are you using the same technique as you posted earlier in this thread where you take 2 similar pictures for the post processing?

Have read about the expodisc for CWB, how's your experience with it? Quite an expensive piece of material isn't it? Have you tried using a Pringles Lid and compared it with the expodisc?

Sorry, so many questions.

The Coolpix 950 has not beenmodified for IR photography. Its CCD sensor is quite sensitive to IR and could be previewed on the LCD and handheld for IR photography.

The Kodak EIR post-processing is done with 2 shots but not layered but by channel copying. In the normal shot, the green channel is copied into the blue and the red channel is copied into the green. Then the red channel in the IR shot is copied into the red channel of the normal shot... and voila... Kodak EIR colours ! :)

This is nice

Actually, just post process in PS will do ;)
I'm too lazy to remove R72, just shoot and preview, if not good just shoot again.... that's y buy 1GB of CF mah :bsmilie:

Yes. Same post-processing method.

The Expodisk is expensive because it is manufactured to very exact standards and is more accurate than the exposure metering in any SLRs. If you don't particularly care about the WB accuracy, a Pringle (or any other locally available potato chip) lid could be used. A user in the States has once posted detailed controlled comparisons of shots taken with both the Expodisk and the Pringle lid and it could clearly be seen that there is still a colour cast if a Pringle lid is used while the colours of shots taken with the Expodisk is perfect.

Then again, many people could not tell if there is any colour cast when they examine their own photos even if their lives depended on it, so for these users and those who are not so discriminating, a Pringle lid will do just fine. :dunno:

The way I do it is like this:
(a) Set camera to AWB and put the Expodisk over the IR filter on the lens.
(b) Point the camera at a bright part of the sky and take a shot using the same exposure time you would use for IR photography with your camera.
(c) Do a CWB with the shot just taken.
(d) Set the camera to CWB and shoot away.

Only one CWB is needed for a shoot even if there are changes in the light condition as a lot of post-processing would still have to be done afterwards. The purpose of the CWB in IR photography is just to cut away the bulk of the dark red cast that result from the use of the IR filter. This will make colour IR post-processing much easier. It is not really needed if the final result is to be B&W IR images.

This filter is almost as dark as the R72 and has 50% transmittance at 715mm (compared to 50% transmittance at 720mm for R72). Can be used as a cheap alternative to large diameter R72. But must also invest in the Cokin P system to use it properly.
Do let us know if CP has it and how much it cost.
