Hi guys,

I need some help on my new-bought DVX102BEN.

I bought this camcorder last week and shot it over the weekend. It was a nice camera and was having absolute fun with it.

However, problem started to arise when I tried to capture the DV footage to my computer.
I linked my DV camcorder to my Vista PC through a firewire cable to my firewire port (Texas Instrument OHIC Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller).

I have tried all the recommended procedures, like, switching the camera to VCR mode before linking up and etc. But to no avail.

I was suspecting that Vista is the problem. I have read on the forum that many have experienced such problems with Vista, not being able to identify sources from firewire port.

I have google-ed and searched around extensively for solutions but none works.

So if someone out there has such past experiences and has solved it, please help me...

Thank you.

Things to note:
(1) Have you installed the drivers? It can be found in the packaging. The drivers are usually unsigned and it is OK to use.
(2) You did not mention what software you use to import the video. Recommended: Vegas 9 Pro (PC) or Final Cut Pro (Mac)

Things to do:
(1) Set your camcorder to VCR.
(2) Rewind the tape to the beginning.
(3) Use the software to import the video.

Hope that helps.

You shouldn't need to install a driver for a video cam connected via FW. You might be able to get Vista to use the Legacy FW driver in the Device Manage of the Control Panel. See if that helps.

You should be aware that the connection should be done before turning on the DVX. There are cases where the camera port gets fried

Have you tried the cam on another computer to prove it works?

I had a Sony cam that had to goto SSC twice before it worked using firewire. Thought it was the comp but tried it on a friends lappy and it still didn't register.

Normal case is you usually don't need any drivers. There are some occassion where the OS do not detect the camcoder for whatever reason and you just install it from your CD under compatibility mode. It works for me after trying everything else.

I haven't come across this before for FW connection to video cameras. USB yes, but so far I've never even seen a FW driver for a videocam.

If all else fails, use USB which is just as fast as Firewire.

Assuming the cam has USB (I think the DVX102 does not) and that the USB transfer does not cause additional compression on the video signal.

General it is best to use FW for DV because it is a straight copy of the digital video data from the tape, without any losses.

Using XP.
FW (IEEE1394) download works beautifully with my DV videocam.
Plug and Play.

hi TS,

Not sure how u have done it..
can u elaborate how did u try to capture? things like the video editing software that u used. since u never mentioned abt the software, I am suspecting that u was expecting to detect your DVX102B as tho like an external hard disk? which shd not be that case.
As it is tape base, u will need to capture thru the editing software.

Anyway since u are using a DVX102B, n may already have certain knowledge in videos.. I supposed that i shd not have any doubt.. but i am just suspecting.. :)

Hi guys,

Thanx for all the comments and advices...
I really appreciate your valuable advices.

I am using Adobe Premiere as editing software, and my computer does have Windows Movie Maker. I read that these two software can help me capture my DV footage from my camcorder.

The problem doesnt lie with the procedures, i guess... Bcos I have tried all sorts of ways recommended thru google-ing. Today, I tried my camcoder with my friend's XP computer, using Window Movie Maker, it captures just fine. So, I can deduce that it isnt my camcorder that is the problem.

When I plug my camcorder onto my laptop via 4pin-4pin firewire, following the procedures suggested by you guys, my laptop just didnt detect any device. It was as if nothing was plug in. This is supported by checking the status of "My Computer" and "Network Connection".

I have read that there is some problem on Vista with Firewire. Is that true?

I am still pretty new to videography. Really appreciate all the help and advices.:)

Aaahhh... Now you are clarifying!

OK, here's what you do:
(1) Connect FW to your camcorder.
(2) Right mouse click on "My Computer"
(3) Click "Manage"
(4) Click "System Tools > Device Manager"
(5) Look for your Camera in the right panel. It should have a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark.
(6) Right mouse click on the device.
(7) Select "Update Device Driver"
(8) Let the PC "Search for Updated Driver Automatically"

After that, you are good to go.
