will post more of my first impressions later

Wahhh no price and delivery date. No answer to the key question how good is the low light capability given its 3200 max before going to hi1 ect. The other question is "is this a repriced D3X performance body" Guess we will have to wait till April ? March ?

Nikon has done it again!

@ortega
Did you manage to take a peek at pictures with ISO 6400? What is ur impression of the noise handling at these two levels? How far behind from D3s?

I am also excited! This MAY be the DSLR to get if I do get one.

Any image stabilization? Any sensor cleaning mechanism?

My impression there, looking at the images taken at ISO 3200 is that it can be use for commercials. ISO 6400 is a maybe ? for commercials. But for lesser demanding jobs it is not an issue.

I would not compare it to D3s, for the simple reason it is comparing apple to orange. One is 36mp and one is 12mp, for a D3s to have good clean images at 6400 is a non issue afterall it is only 12mp.

The D800 will be available first followed by the D800E.

If you down-res the D800 to 12MP?

Yes it has the sensor cleaning (according to to brochure).

Not sure if I want to get a D800 to downsize to 12mp. The D4 does a better job.

I understand where you are coming from, as in a particular situation where there is a need for high iso performance you may want to downsize to achieve that. I think the D800 RAW cannot downsize, unlike the 5DMark II or III? (correct me if I am wrong about the 5D)

any chance to get it before I go to Korea for a month? (leaving 30th March)

Yes you probably may be able to, for the D800. However the quantity coming in to Singapore may be limited and demand is expected to be very high. I would suggest you put your name with your dealer to pre-order to make sure you get a unit before end Mar.

Erh. I downloaded the Jpeg pictures and tried them. It's 36 mega pixel but of D90 quality. I am not a technical expert but I think the lens and the sensor r not optimized for each other. Recovering lost details does only slightly better than D90. But that wld not make anyone switch. For quality, one does better with a 22 megapixel medium format than a 36 megapixel DSLR.

Did Nikon say that they will have special lenses with this new mega pixel range? Maybe that is their long term plan? Special sensor and new lens range

LOL! The function was at Pan Pac Ocean rooms.
