Film body advice

i've seen f100 w/mb going for about 1.2k while a F80 is about 400

I've actually posed the 1005-pixel RGB sensor question to Thom Hogan and this was his reply:

Question:

"I'm a D70 user who's thinking into venturing into film. On top of my
'consideration' list is the Nikon F5. I've heard lots of good things
about its 1005-pixel RGB metering and was wondering if its the same as
that of the D70?"

Thom's reply:

"Yes and no. It's the same technology, but it works better on the F5, believe
it or not.

The digital bodies appear to have a tendency to account for highlights too
much, and thus will underexpose slightly in high contrast situations to
protect from channel blowout. Moreover, it appears that film is more
sensitive to color changes in exposure than digital--the F5 and F6 are near
perfect in marginal lighting with significant color shift, while the
digitals aren't."

Get the F5, lots of them are for sale... If lucky might even get a mint condition for bout 1500 if not lower. good luck!!!

Both the F5 and F100 are good film cameras. With regards to spare parts support, the F5 still has 9 years to go while the F100 is a current model. The F5 has dust seals on the rear film door, while the F100 doesn't. Since the fillm is constantly being changed frame by frame, you won't get a "dust on sensor" problem even with the F100.

Both AF sensors are good (might be the same CAM1300), with the F5 motor having more torque. In today's world of AFS lenses, AF motor torque is less relevant. The F5's RGB sensor is good though. But only a few % better than the F100's meter. Is that few % worth it?

I'd choose based on whether you would use the F100's battery pack and vertical shutter release often. If you are going to leave the battery pack on 100% of the time, then go for a late serial number F5 instead. Otherwise, you'll benefit from a lighter F100 (without battery pack).

Thanks aaron.. but could you give me a ballpark figure for a "late serial number F5" ?

ha ha ha... you still remember I have one... Bought it second hand though and served me very well!!! and is still continuing to serve me well. VERY VERY VERY impressed by its metering capability, especially when using it for night photography. Prior to F5, used the M mode to capture the lights and always bracket every shots...... and then ......progressed to F5,... being using the 'Pundek' (P) mode. Believe me...even on slide....the metering...is next to perfect.

Really one helluva of a camera. the buying points is it
- matrix metering (but not backward compatible)
- built like a tank (can take a lot of beating, hell if you accidentally turn and hit someone.....pity the fella)
- reliability (F5user (970k shots!!!!)
- DAMN BLINDING fast AF... can even tear out some lenses...torgue key
- Its self correcting shutter....once the shutter affect the exposure... it stays kaput...but he he he he... (touch wood) haven't reach tat stage yet!!

:bsmilie:

Go for the F100 if the weight and the vertical grip is not of a concern AND is not used. Other than than.......go for the F5, it not its predesessor, the one and only F4!!!.. aiyo.. me gian already to fire it again tonight!! :bsmilie:

OK thank you everyone for your most useful sharing of advice/experiences. I've more or less decided on the F5 and will start saving up toward it. Of course, feel free to continue discussion on this thread, it has been a valuable resource for me in making my decision. :)

F4 has no more parts. Be careful. If aesthetics don't matter, go for a user condition F5, which can be had for as low as $800. The thing is built like a god damn tank so even if the outside is all scratched up, the mechanics are probably still fine. Oh, and get nikon to replace it with the 2nd gen grip they developed a few years back!

just to make you more gian, here's a small little shot i took with my cheapo webcam.

I put the other body there as a reference to size, to show you the size of Canon's top Film body too, and well, as you can see, they're roughly the same in size.

All in all, both excellent cameras with features far beyond any other film camera.

Wah,
how I wish I could ask something similar to gymrat's question ...." the 2nd hand eos1V / 2nd hand eos 1D mk2 can be got for about the same price as a 2ndhand eos3 / eos20D,....hmm...which one should I get? "
then I won't have a problem wondering which cam to buy... ;p

well, still hoping... and scouring the buy/sell adverts.

Actually for the price you bought the F5, I'd have gotten the F6, but of course F6 doesn't come with grip, but the CLS would be enticing. :)
