Hello, sorry for my late reply. Here is some info on F5 serial numbers. From what I've read on the other Nikon boards, F5 bodies after 1998 did not show the battery drain problems. All F5 bodies still have the problem of the rubber layer coming loose though.. You can glue it back with UHU or if you want, pay Nikon to replace the rubber with a new one.Gymrat76 said:

Actually i have checked and ask alot ppl, the F5 is actually better than F6. And i personally dun that like 2-piece camera mah ... :embrass:
and I like the removeable prism, more fun ... and the bulit ( material ), the feel of F5 is more solid ... ;p

Just a question - why didn't you consider getting a 'cheaper' F6 instead?

Other than Mrs Gymrat's bonk, you might want to consider the following between the F5 and F100:
F100- shutter botton lock/unlock by twisting lever, F5- shutter button lock/unlock by pressing a botton before twisting lever (2 step). I feel this gets in the way on the F5 when transitioning.
F100 - focus area lights up on focus, F5 - does not; not sure if newer focus screen have a workaround. Just a minor user preference issue.
F5 - non detachable motor drive + the 8 AA batts. Would be a problem if you want to go light. On the other hand, balances perfectly with the 2.8 zooms. Personally, I would not carry a F5 on a trip. Carrying it in Singapore and people give you the "wah pro ah!" look; good and bad.
F5 - mechanical mirror lockup; a great feature for those super long lenses, shoot the stars and the moon situations. This is missing in the F100 and implemented electronically and tied to the shutter release on the F6.
F5 - eyepiece shutter built in, great for long expsoures. F100 -- none, use black tape.
F100 - auto rewind on film end. F5 - no auto rewind. Both cameras winds film all the way into the cassette. F5 can be factory modified to leave film leader out on rewind. On the F5, film rewind is a 2 step action again.

This is where the F5 stands apart...because it takes the guessing out of the equation. You don't have to have an in depth knowldege of exposure to be taking great pictures. The F5 will nail the correct exposure again and again and again allowing the photographer the leisure of concentrating on framing. The RGB metering has not let me down once...not once.
8 fps comes in real handy when shooting sports / animals, even kids!! Every action photographer knows that it is extremely difficult to nail the perfect shot with just a single exposure and that often the best shot comes mid-roll in a given burst. If you get a chance, try shooting motor sports or a bird in flight using an F5 and an F80 and you'll understand the difference 8 fps makes over 4 or 3 fps.
And the focus motor...ever get frustrated because you missed that shot because the lens takes forever to focus? If you've shot with an F5, there's no going back.
I'm not a professional photographer...nowhere near. I enjoy the hobby a lot and I also shoot with an FM3a, F80, D70 an an 8700 and I love them all...but the F5 is difficult to beat because it takes great pictures with the minimum fuss.

Using the F5 is an experience. I had the good fortune to have mommy sponsor it as my first camera. Spoilt me for life. Using an F5 is like driving a Merc, from then on, you'll never look at any other camera the same again. I missed the complete upgrade bug because of it since nothing comes close. I had to use an F100 for awhile (not mine), and i was left wanting. Better grab one before i get back cos i'm so gonna get one when i return 
and i'm a canon shooter now.
Ok, that was seriously OT. I don't think the battery drain was ever cured, cos i had one that was a 2000 unit and it still drank batteries like a drunk quaff pints! The best cure was the NiCd pack and it also boosted the fps.

Guess I was lucky with regards to the battery drain. My F5 has a serial # 30007** which makes it very early production. Have not run into any battery drain issues. I now use AA lithiums and I've shot over 50 rolls and have yet to change them...but then again I don't have any VR lenses. NAS is forever lurking in the shadows and the F6 is a mighty tempting preposition except for the price.
Just curious...why the switch to Canon after the F5?Shah
