Long story, i went from F5 to D1H. Then clients started asking for more mpx so i went for the D100. The d100 is fundamentally a great camera as long as you can live with a 6 frame buffer which i could not. The D2H was delayed for close to 6mth and i was turning down jobs so i sold all and switched to a 1D. Long story eh?
I used to use NiMH with my F5 and would get about 10-15 rolls on 1 set. That said, the highest cap at that time was 1800mah so many things are better now.
I never see the inhibition to travel with kit. A photog should be aware of his kit, kinda like in the army where u had a whole load of kit on the SBO but u still took care of it all. I used to travel with a Leica, F5, F3, Xpan and a whole set of lenses. Went to turkey with 10kg of kit (ex. tripod) for a holiday! I look upon all my cameras as potential weapons and have never hesitated to use them as such. My F3 and F5 have done lots of damage to heads and backs!

Wah..you must have big shoulder muscles! Two bodies for me plus Tripod already siong!! Boy, that must have been quite a switch particularly as most of us invest in lenses as we build up the system...but yeah i understand the frustration you went through with Nikon during that period. But now there's the D2x to help tempt you back ;).
Haven't had to use the F5 as a weapon yet (touch wood) but once I did accidently almost hit a kid unconsiuos when he ran into my F5 which was swinging by a shoulder strap... :embrass:

Hi Nikonians,

I'm in need of some advice on which film body to buy. I'm currently using the D70, but would like to venture into shooting film, so I need some advice on which film body would best complement my existing lenses. I need a body that is on which I can use my G lenses (no aperture ring), as well as VR. Preferably something with CAM1300, and is able to use a motor drive/vertical grip. I've been considering a second hand F100 or F5, and have been told that since the prices of these two are quite similar, I shoud just spring and get an F5. Some advice from film shooters would be great. Thanks :)
Well i recommend you the Nikon F100

Anyone who's seen me will tell you i'm a scrawny little brat :) Muscles does not it take, only determination. That was back when i was 17 and a bit on the crazy side. Heck, i used to cart my entire load when doing street shoots in little india or chinatown. Those that went out with me will remember, wormz, barret, bluestrike, etc. Heck, i still haven't lighten up. Photo trips are probably the only exercise i get. Its like weights training and trekking combined. Still lugging a 400mm out to the countryside to shoot.
The D2X seems like a great camera, haven't shot it in person so i can't say for sure but i don't have a stable photographic income anymore so i can't switch as often as i want to. Besides, you won't believe how hard it is to sell a 400mm f2.8!!!!

The switch was ok cos i got most of my stuff cheap. Hunted high and low for good discounts. I think my total loss was under 1k. Buying the old AFS zooms helped since they sold faster then. I paid a high price for my 1D though but nikon was seriously pissing me off with the delays. No regrets, the D2H was nothing to scream about.

Back to topic, get a F5. What are you waiting for??!!!

Sage advice time.....

Firstly there's a considerable weight difference between and F100 and an F5. An F100 with the MB-15 battery pack weighs in at approx 35.7oz versus 43.3oz for the F5. The weight difference is a hair under 1/2 pound, or around 225gr which equates to a nearly 25% increase in weight.

The AF system is brutal on non professional grade lenses. Forget using most Sigma's and lower grade Nikkors as the camera will spit them out with broken pinion and spur gears after a period of time. If you are planning on buying an F5 then plan on using pro grade lenses - it's that simple.

VERY VERY true...

and if u do intend on using 3rd party lenses, check them once in a while.

Ok thanks guys. The lens I shoot with most of the time will be the AF-S VR 70-200 f/2.8, so shouldn't be a problem with that. I will worry a bit about the 50mm f/1.8 since it feels a bit flimsy :)

The other two lenses I own currently are the Tamron 90mm DI macro, which will see limited use, and the Nikkor 18-70 f/3.5-4.5 DX, which I can't use anyway. So looks like I need to invest in a full frame wide angle Nikkor as well

Well... i too use the 90 sp and sigma's 12-24 for family stuff, and to photograph insects in my garden.

the sigma shouldn't be a problem, but you might wanna watch out for the tamron... check the 90's focusing gear system once in a while, and see if there's any spare movement. The F5 has a tendency to "push" the lens all the way out... resulting in softer pictures after a period of time. I'm using the older version of the 90, and this HAS affected me once or twice... donno abt the version of your lens though..

just a thought i guess.

:)

MF the micro lens lor. I thought we all did that? Oh, or get MF lenses. Problem solved! Cheaper too.

Yup MF for macro, but i seem to be using this lens more and more for portraits.... sharpness surprizes me sometimes. :)

The Tamron 90 is a very nice lens, unfortunately the focussing is a tad slow.. tried it once during a model shoot, but found that the AF is too slow, the model always looks away before or just when I get her in focus... plus it tends to hunt around a bit. Still, like I said, this lens would probably get limited use if I get the F5, and yes, I do MF when doing macro :)

Whats a good full-frame replacement for my 18-70DX? I mean BESIDES the 17-35 f/2.8

you can add the extension 1.4 or 1.7 or maybe 2.0 ?

The full-frame replacement will be the AF-S 28-70/2.8...

:sweatsm: Wah all the really expensive pro lenses.. Think I'll need something wider than 28-70... then again, I better stop here before the BBB virus hits me again :bsmilie:

Wider?

Then go for the 17-35mm F2.8 lor.

The Sigma 24-70 F2.8 EX settles a good range.
