EOS 7D user,information sharing thread.

Finally finished my torture test on the 7D.

Everything seems fine:
- little/no low ISO banding on my copy
- ISO sensitivity is in line with 450D
- AF micro-adjustment = 0 for all my lenses
- diffraction effects are minuscule at f/8
- hand-held shutter speeds for all my lenses are NOT affected in any way by increased pixel density
- single shot, center AF (both spot and normal size) is a little less sure-footed than 450D (quite a surprise)
- slightly better high ISO performance than 450D (12 MP) at the pixel level
- amount of recorded detail is astounding: a first class tool for landscape enthusiasts
- AI servo feature for macro shooting is a godsend: works remarkably well in compensating for slight back and forth rocking motion
- large, 100% viewfinder is fabulous, makes scene composition so much easier
- viewfinder on-demand grid lines + leveling tool comes in handy occasionally
- grip is excellent, just like Sony A700/850/900, the way previous xxD should have been

Haven't got to play with MRAW yet, but I don't think I'll use it.

By your judgement, by how much is the ISO performance better than 450D? 25% or more?

Decided to check out mRAW.

Boy, am I in for a surprise!

I was quite disappointed with the sRAW implementation in the 50D. There was ZERO advantage to be gained from the sRAW files.

But with the 7D, mRAW is now a superb high ISO alternative. It practically destroys the competition.

I took some ISO 3200 shots and converted in DPP with ALL NR =0. For 450D, I push-pull from ISO 1600. Image quality of mRAW is comparable to RAW downsized and both are MUCH MUC BETTER than 450D RAW files.

Way to go, Canon!

I suppose thatll be a big concern for many since its 18mp......wonder if canon has improved on its noise reduction technology since the 50D?

I went to try the 7D at CP Penin.. I actually had to go look for noise in my friend's black spec frames at 3200. Of course it was just a casual snap with no scientific explanations or experimental design.

It seems to me that the noise level of 7D is higher than that of 5D2. I took the 7D out for a shoot yesterday. All were done at ISO400. On viewing the images in LR2, they seem grainier than I will expect at 400 at 100% crop. For the 5D2, noise will start to creep out at 800 or more.

But I just read in the 7D manual that : if the 'Auto Image Optimizer' function is enabled (factory setting is enabled and set to standard) it may increase the noise level in the images taken. So, I will probably have turned it off an try again...

Just an observation, nothing scientific about it too

5D2, definitely better noise performance compared to 7D. one is full-frame one is APS-C. But 7D is definitely one of the best APS-C cameras for noise performance compared to resolution advantage in recent years.

Were you shooting raw or JPEG? for me, JPEG at L & fine, noise levels look good at 800 & 1600. if Raw, perhaps should input the necessary NR in lightroom first to get the best results.

I generally shoot in RAW. Sorry, but I don't quite understand what you meant by 'input the necessary NR in Lightroom first'...do you mean i should do the NR with the likes of Nik's before importing into NR?

I generally just use the LR's noice reduction function...

Er...what exposure compensation are you talking about?

At M mode, everything is manual, which means that you dial in your shutter speed and aperture manually. Thus, when you take a metering off your intended subject, the viewfinder's display will give you your exposure reading. From the exposure reading, you then fine tune either your aperture or your shutter speed to get the exposure you want.

For me, my eyes will not leave the viewfinder, while my index finger is on the main dial and the thumb is on the clickwheel. So when I'm dialing to get my intended exposure, my eyes will read the meter from the viewfinder while my fingers will be at work simultaneously.

The first down side I just discovered with my 7D... it takes nearly an hour just to download all those L-JPEG+sRAW to my lappy from today's 8fps testing

I briefly tried out the 7D at Bally Photo Funan and it feels solid, and performance, AF is very speedy too. First impression is that when i look through the viewfinder, it's just a clear screen (unlike a focusing screen as with other DSLRs where u can see the AF points) and the grid only appears when the camera is turned on (this is due to the new transmissive LCD). The viewfinder is also quite significantly larger than those found on 40D/50D and is very bright too. The 100% viewfinder is great!

Price as found out for the 7D is $2590 for body only and $3080 with the 18-135 IS kit lens. All prices inclusive of GST.
