iso? any pp?

quick shot of the moon with the 7D with 300mm F4L IS + 1.4 convertor.

note this is not a 100% crop. image at 50% size, slightly cropped after that for show on the forum.

iso 400 pp = resize and highlight recovery for the dark areas of the moon

You really need good glass for 7d. Detail per pix looks relatively higher...

yup its my most detailed shot of the moon thus far....could never even come close with my 5D2 with 400 5.6

looks good enough for me

now if we can have some High ISO samples... ;)

7D Review!!! :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

The below is my personal view of 7D within my knowledge, please do not bombard if I said anything not to your liking. ;)

1) When I first hold the 7D, the first thing I like is the GRIP. It fits into my hand so nicely (better than 1DM2N, 50D and 5DM2) and resting place for my thumb is well placed and not afraid of touching other buttons.

7) AF: I like the speed of 7D AF it is fast(faster than 5DM2) and with so many option to choose your AF point, we are spoilt for choice.

Thanks for the review. In your opinion, how is the performance of the 7D's new AF cf the AF in the 1DMk2N?

Anyone paired the 580 EX flash with the 7D? I cant seem to be able to set 2nd curtain sync for it. At the external flash setting, the setting for curtain sync is inactive.

Tried both the 580EX and 580EX II on the 5D2 and 7D and there are my findings:

580EX on 5D2
2nd curtain sync available on all shooting modes
580EX on 7D
2nd curtain sync available on all shooting modes except Creative Auto and Full Auto
580EX II on 5D2
2nd curtain sync available on all shooting modes except Creative Auto and Full Auto
580EX II on 7D
2nd curtain sync available on all shooting modes except Creative Auto and Full Auto

I conclude that with the newer offerings, Canon has decided to remove the 2nd curtain sync (and high speed sync too) in Creative Auto and Full Auto shooting modes which actually makes some sense since the user has essentially handed the controls over to the camera. Even though 2nd curtain sync and high speed sync icons are available on the 580EX and 5D2 in Creative Auto and Full Auto shooting modes, I don't know if they actually work because I've actually never shot in CA and FA modes. Hope this helps.

Got My 7D body. Will use it in my Kaelong trip later...

Thanks, the 2nd curtain sync does work on my 7D, just that while I used to be able to set it in-camera with my 30D, now I have to set it on my flash when attached to the 7D.

Finally finished my torture test on the 7D.

Everything seems fine:
- little/no low ISO banding on my copy
- ISO sensitivity is in line with 450D
- AF micro-adjustment = 0 for all my lenses
- diffraction effects are minuscule at f/8
- hand-held shutter speeds for all my lenses are NOT affected in any way by increased pixel density
- single shot, center AF (both spot and normal size) is a little less sure-footed than 450D (quite a surprise)
- slightly better high ISO performance than 450D (12 MP) at the pixel level
- amount of recorded detail is astounding: a first class tool for landscape enthusiasts
- AI servo feature for macro shooting is a godsend: works remarkably well in compensating for slight back and forth rocking motion
- large, 100% viewfinder is fabulous, makes scene composition so much easier
- viewfinder on-demand grid lines + leveling tool comes in handy occasionally
- grip is excellent, just like Sony A700/850/900, the way previous xxD should have been

Haven't got to play with MRAW yet, but I don't think I'll use it.

Not sure if anyone has experienced the following:
Took my 7D for test shoot with 100-400 at the Japanese Garden this morning with some birding enthusiasts.

Setting: Aperture Priority, ISO400, center weighted metering, Single Shot mode and with the center focusing point selected

On a few occasions, the camera will not focus (It doesn't hunt, the subject looked clear and focus in the view finder but there is no confirmation beep) when the shutter button was half pressed. It occurred during initial acquiring of the subjects and even during subsequent shots after the subject has been acquired. I am still able to take the shot even without the beep.

Could it be that the subject was already 'in focus' by coincidence on certain occasions or since the subject has initially been acquired in the first shot, subsequent shots are within the 'focusing plane' thus no focusing confirmation?

I do not experience the above with my 5D2, there will always be a confirmation beep every time I depressed the shutter button half way, so I found the morning experience strange...:dunno:
Any possible explanations?
Thanks

Did you turn the beep on?

Are you on AI Servo mode? If you are, then you will not hear a beep as it is constantly tracking and focusing.
I

Can the 7D use SDHC memory cards?

I

Nope. I had it on single-shot mode

Decided to check out mRAW.

Boy, am I in for a surprise!

I was quite disappointed with the sRAW implementation in the 50D. There was ZERO advantage to be gained from the sRAW files.

But with the 7D, mRAW is now a superb high ISO alternative. It practically destroys the competition.

I took some ISO 3200 shots and converted in DPP with ALL NR =0. For 450D, I push-pull from ISO 1600. Image quality of mRAW is comparable to RAW downsized and both are MUCH MUC BETTER than 450D RAW files.

Way to go, Canon!

Yo,
just wanna to check with u guys whether when you do sensor cleaning, is the noise quite loud?

Cause mine's quite loud. So wonder if its normal ? :)
