In the old days (1970s),
1. Half the SLRs had MANUAL exposure. The others generally had either Aperture or SS priority AE. In the 1980s, some had more modes. ALL had only 1 type of metering.
2. There was NO such thing as AF.
3. ISO 400 film was rather grainy. Good film was ISO 25 (Kodachrome) or 64 or 100 generally
4. LCD - what is that?
5. Video - use a cine camera
And people took great photos etc. A lot of skill.
Now, people complain that the 5DMk2 is not quite good enough, and complain that it is the equipment at fault. It has been said many times = photography is about using your equipment well, including all the limitations.
