EM-10 Official! The OM-D for All!

Hi all, I am thinking of getting the EM-10 very soon. Can anyone advise whether I should wait for COMEX happening at the end of this month, or just take advantage of the August cashback deal now? Thanks!

Cameras at COMEX? Forget about it. Just hoot now. :D

Its the hotshoe :)
In all, I will think the EM10 will make a better choice, like it or not, the EM5 is honestly quite an 'aged' body comparing to EM10.

Just out of topic abit, I actually don't need the kit lens that comes with the EM-10.

Is it better to get another GX7 or EM-10 as second body ? Bcos i think the price is more or less the same, right ?

Thanks

I think the price of gx7 is still holding strong and higher than a em10, BN or used. Why not consider a gm1 (or wait for the rumoured up and coming gm2) which has a much smaller form factor. I am currently using one and really enjoying it with a prime (usually oly 17 or 25) which i carry along during every weekend out. It fit into a waist pouch which i used to house a LX7. And at least for the time being i am not considering any other compact for normal weekend light carrying..

Thanks jackwolf but I find the GM1 too small and if I remember correctly, it was a deal breaker for me bcos it doesn't have a viewfinder ... hopefully the GM2 has ... btw when is the GM2 supposed to be coming ?

Thanks

Hmm , I can't say which is better here as it's down to individual needs. Both come with different sets of strengths for example GX7's 2 axis ibis vs EM10's 3 axis while a better grip on GX7 than EM10. Price wise u will be surprised how much the GX7 with 20/1.7ii kit has dropped in price ;which is enough to make BnS sets look expensive in comparison.

Thanks Keith,

I was thinking ... since there is no offer fore EM-10 body only and I do not need the kit lens ... is it worth it to get the body only of EM-1 at $600 more ? (ie $1,598 - $998)

Does EM-1 has a built-in flash ?

Thanks

EM1 doesn't come with a built in flash , the EM10 does. But frankly I've never even used the bundled flash unit during everyday shooting and only a FL300R when I'm doing shoots.

The EM10 vs EM1 is a substantial difference... And will go back to your needs again. Size being one major consideration already.

If you are buying EM1 with 17mmF1.8, there is a bundle which should cost about $2,000 street price. Which is cheaper than buying separately EM1 ($1598) and 17mmF1.8 (around $600) = $2,198 .. about $200 cheaper.

I'm also struggling with deciding on the EM10 or EM1 and I also don't want the EM10 kit lens. Looking at a Olympus 17mmF1.8 (or Leica 15mmF1.7), Olympus 12-40mmF2.8 and Panasonic 35-100F2.8 (later)

For me, I don't need the EM1 weather proofing, but what I want is the EM1 5 AXIS IBIS. Seems EM10 the various sites reporting its good down to around 1/10 sec .. but EM1 can do down to 1 second. That's pretty useful for still night shots. The focussing I think won't be much difference ins S mode, but in continue would be different, but I've never like continuous even with Nikon bodies, so I perfectly ok with S mode, even for action. But the EM1 is 100g heavier and no build in flash and of course more expensive.

Hi, For the 17/1.8 I'm pretty sure it's much lower than $600 currently with the previous cashback promos by Olympus SG :) ask around a bit , unsure let me know ; at least u won't get chopped.

For EM1 body, if u don mind , one can obtain a set from Qoo at $1049 + $25 delivery but buying from which source is really up to oneself as I have bros who insist on buying Leica from Leica while some insist on buying from 2nd hand shops. Or one can pick up a almost brand new set from BnS prob at really good prices now.

The 5 axis on the EM1 is crazy enough for me to shoot sharp holding it in one hand with a heavy lens (Nocticron 42.5) and other hand holding my baby. Yes I used the word crazy because it's true.

I've tried Sony A7 (lens with OSS) , Fuji (almost all the bodies and their primes) and none could perform the same coming to stabilization.

The AF with high sequence shots the EM1 is fast enough I've shown some bros (subzero and alfie) here the reason why I never really use CAF. It's seems u have the RX100iii which is already a very very capable camera , if u don't mind EM1's size and weight , my suggestion is go for the EM1 since I remember u mentioned u will go for the pro level lenses too which are heavier & need better balance.

The 14-42EZ is one of the sharper kit lenses on the MFT platform (I tried the 14-42, 14-42II , 14-42IIR) but I agree that i will skip a POwer zoom end of the day.

The $600 was reference to the original price without the cash back .. Now with cash back can save around $200, which I mentioned.

Will look around at alternative places to get a cheaper EM1.

Sounds great about the 5 Axis and focus. One of the main reasons I'm looking at m43 is that. Often if I pass my Fuji XE2 or X100s to someone to shoot a photo of us, if don't come out well (their hand shake or mis focus). Hopefully this is more idiot proof (once I set it up correctly) for people trying to shoot photos of us. Also in street shooting, grab shots sometimes I get hand shake from too fast shifting the camera. I like the X100s, but the lack of stabilisation means I'm limited to around 1/60 or 1/30 at most. Being able to get down lower is definitely an advantage. And since I shot JPEG only, going to ISO 6400 on X100s or XE2 is not an option as the faces turn out very plastic, even with the noise reduction at the lowest setting. So both Fuji I use at most ISO 3200. So if the M43 is close to the Fuji at ISO3200, its good enough, plus I should be able to use lower ISO due to better stabilisation and wider aperture lens.

But I'm also considering a EM10, but I'm concerned that I won't get the wow factor in terms of stabilisation vs the the EM1. Going down to /10 or 1/8 on an EM10 is good but not wow. For EM1 getting down to 0.5 or 1 second is wow ...

i just bought an EM10 from AMK at a very good price...

my decision to get it is because of its size, specs and affordability...not too long ago, i was very into photography and had a SLR with 3 prime lenses, motor drive and flash gun. had to take a hiatus because of the digital revolution and only had a compact digi cam...

for me, i have gotten tired of lugging tons of equipment around and prices most DSLR & mirrorless is a bit steep for me...

so in terms of portability, affordability, usability, photo quality, versatility and of cause the good looks of EM10 does not harm as well, reminds me of my old SLR...

now i can go back to doing something that had once given me so much joy before...

Welcome to the group ;)

Hi all, do you guys have this problem with your E-M10 whereby the back panel of the E-M10 creaks when you apply a pressure on the back thumb grip? It's as if the back panel wasn't properly attached to the body of the camera, and hence can "move" when you apply sufficient force to the thumb grip. This can be a problem especially during video recording, as the mic seems to be located right beside the thumb grip, and will pick up the creaking noise if you press the grip hard enough.

Someone on dpreview also posted about this problem: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3685601#forum-post-53854827

I just got a pre owned pana 20mm f1.7. I noticed that when mounted my em10, it's kinda noisy when hunting for focus. Like a whirring sound. Whereas my kit lens is much more silent. I'm just worried that it is not normal. I do understand that the lens design is slow. Any owners of the 20mm can validate that? Thanks!

It's normal.. Even on pany body. That's what this lens is "infamous" for apart from the focus time, and is not encourage to be used for video. Otherwise, this is one great lens for its compactness and picture quality.

Thanks for your replies. Was worried I got a dud. But indeed....very nice bokeh and sharp!

ahhh jialut...my viewfinder eye piece is missing, i don`t know how i dropped my eye piece also...
can anyone advice me on where to get a new eye piece and how much will it cost (hopefully not to expensive) ....
