the one of the ducks looks good to me..

Looks like PnS video, don't quite understand what they mean by HD video, looks more like video in 16:9 format and that's about it. The duck and spider videos are not as bad as the lady and her horse.

I have a HD camcorder, image quality is way way way way better that the demo video.

The pixelation of the D90 demo video looks quite bad leh. The video can be found here.

the video is not the HD version. if it was, then it must be compressed in the flv format.
Anyway, the video is not the reason why we buy DSLRs. Good to have, but not urgent.

LOL.. you're comparing HD camcorder with a video from a DSLR.
This is the same as comparing DSLR pictures with your still capture from HD camcorder.

i think there is no way to go around it, pretty heavy compression will be there, else the write speed of the SD card definitely wun go on par with the data rate. having said that, its considered really good for a camera(yes, not HDV camera)

anyway from the .flv, it seems like they used 640x424 resolution instead of the standard 1280x720

Yah lah, I took the meaning literally. More examples here, but in more meaningful size.

Another thing, about the video mode.

"Autofocus is not available when recording movies. Matrix metering is used regardless of the metering method selected."

I guess can manually zoom and manually focus.

I can imagine first time DSLR buyers will be really interested in the movie mode.. Heck, even I'm quite excited by it.. No comparison with a camcorder of coz, but looking at the possibilities with the lenses available, it could be a really fun feature to have..

Not to mention, the pictures look good too.. If I'm in the market to buy a new DSLR now, I'd have a hard time deciding between the D90 and the D300 from a serious hobbyist point of view..

Hmm, I think that's where the creativity part they've mentioned comes in.. Anyway, if we stop down the aperture on the lens, would it make it easier to get the whole view in focus?

anyway, i think one of the main advantage of the movie mode over all other camcorder might be the low noise at night, after all you using a really large "video sensor" :bsmilie:
and like what psyk1 said, you get the option to use so many lenses, from fish eyes to the super tele (if you can afford)

As a D300 user, I feel really screwed. One level above is the D700 with full frame and fantastic ISO, one level below is a cheaper body with the same D300 sensor and LCD PLUS video. Damn. :bsmilie:

merging threads on D90. pls continue the discussion here rather than create another thread. thnx!

OT: gawd... a DSLR with movie mode. :sweatsm:

to me, if you go DSLR, forget about movie function, different interests

anyone can highlight what about the lens support fot D700/D90 AI/AIS supported?

so call lens support will not like D80/D70 fully mamual, the meter must work like D200/D1/D2?D3

if not, I will never buy it/them!

thanks

Hmmm.... US$1299.....

Anyone knows the local pricing ? Just wondering, cos it seems to be a S$2K price range....

So for S$2K, you can get :-

1. D300 body only
2. D90 with the 18-105mm VR lens

Any comments from you guys ??

;)

Cool. New item, D80 price drop ! haha....

For me, if I have to pick between two DSLRs of similary picture quality and price point, I'd buy the one with movie capability.
It's not necessary, but again it's good to have for one of those moments you would need it.
Some people may also like the range of lenses available for making movies.
I am sure we'll see this trend to continue.

Looks extremely tempting!

Lost in the announcement of the D90 and the new 18-105 VR lens is that the D90 is also compatible with the new GP-1 GPS unit. Great for geotagging! I think that's a great feature to have for the D90, as only the semi-pro and pro bodies were able to have a GPS unit connected.
