hmm.. people used to scoff at digital once.. and even live view more recently..
so, why not video? couldn't have been possible 10 years ago when a tape was still required to record videos!

well, i cant blame you about this, people have different taste and opinion. Mine is that if you want good quality video go buy a small and handy videocam. If you want high quality photo get a decent DSLR. You can never really get the best in both worlds nowadays. Besides i cant seem to imagine myself carrying a DSLR with prime lens shooting video. :dunno:

agreed. you can't get the best of both worlds.
But i don't think that's the purpose of adding video on the D90. It will be foolish if someone intends to shoot a proper video and brings a D90, or whatever P&S with video function for that matter.

I think it's there for those short moments where a video does more justice to the scene than a picture. And if anyone doesn't need the video, can simply not use it.. It shouldn't affect its primary function of taking pictures..

This is to cater more for consumer who do not mind sacrificing some video quality for the convenience of a video and still.

Examples I can think of:

1. Birders many a times like to document a series of action ie feeding, fledging of chicks etc apart from just still photos, will find this useful. With the Nikon DSLR adapter to their Digiscope. Now one not only able to take still but also video of birds in their habitats at great distance without carry a still camera and a video came with all the set up. Esp when moving on foot over remote areas when weight is a major consideration

2. Another example: My daughter prefer just to use her coolpix s6 for her school projects where there is a need to video as well as to photograph ppl during her interview. For her, there is no need for very high video res for her ppt presentation and the convenience of a compact 2-in-1 does the job (anyway I no need to buy her a D90)

3. A D90 looks attractive for a camera to carry around for tour, at time one may want to capture some video clips like from a ferris wheel or some scene from a hot-air balloon, while at the same time photographing still. No need to fumble around to keep the camera and take out the video etc anymore, cos by the time it is done the scene disappeared.

The usage is only limited by our imagination :)

BTW the D90 is a very decent high quality still camera, there are pros using even the predecessor D70 with great results too ;)

technology moves so fast that you find it hard to accept. we are living in a youtube culture, of which, the D90 can produce.

But with the mic like that i wonder if the weather resistance and such would be compromised.

I would not surprised if it does. Having said that, the D2x has a mic too and I don't have any problems after all the years of usage even under raining condition

My only hope for D90 is that the price is not too steep for me.

Edit: I have one more hope: Less amp noise.

could it mean that the D90 has done away with the mirror?
will the D90 be able to shoot silently?

live view in the viewfinder electronically?

this will be interesting

Just hope that the price is not too high...:)
