thanks for the very comprehensive details! for my budget wise its really d90 for me, but i really really love the build and the focus speed of the d300s. any gripes about d90?

Not really. I really thought the D90 is a solid performer. No complaints whatsoever.

I have a D300 which is about a year older than my D90 sitting in the dry cabinet. It's shutter count, about 2000. Shutter count of my D90, about 10000. Result speaks for itself. The only times when I use the D300 are when I needed speed and in situations where I cannot miss a crucial moment shot.

haha wow, you guys pretty much pointed me in the direction of the D90.

any D90 users here using the phottix grip or the jenis grip? hows the build and is there any wobbling?

If you want a grip, I seriously suggest you get the Nikon one. I have heard of 3rd party grips failing within months. But according to many reviews, the best 3rd party one so far is the one from Meike.

The camera battery will last me slightly more than a day of usage, so I don't think the grip is necessary in my case. Besides being bulkier and chunkier (I prefer the sleeker simple design of the cam body by itself, grip spoils that look). The only time I'd find the grip useful is when going overseas for free and easy. My two cents.

Actually when overseas when you have to lug everything with you, the weight will probably affect you the most. I like to carry more batteries. Grip just adds weight, and also light a big "please rob me" sign up. Especially for my case, where I like to travel off the beaten track.

Okay, then you're just written off my very last reason to get a grip! :bsmilie:

hmm really? i thought the phottix grip seems quite highly acclaimed. Anyone else can share?

i Think D90 is heavy enough without grip haa i walked around the whole day in sg feels heavy with the 18-105 haaa.. bt with 50 no problem~

why do u need a grip in the first place???

I know some peeps like them because it makes the D90 look like a D3 from far away... in other words... more "pro"... :bsmilie:

To me D90 is a sleek sportster (light and powerful enough to do the job) - not a Bentley or Rolls Royce...

Especially where in a D90, the grip does nothing extra but lets you insert 2 batteries. If you have time to spare (esp on a trip), why not get 2 or 3 batteries and leave them in your pocket or camera bag? I think it works better that way. How long does it takes you to swap out batteries? 10 seconds max right? Cannot spare that time meh?

Even for a D300, where using a grip with a D3 battery will boost the speed to 8FPS, I still cannot find reason to use one.

If you need a grip to make your setup look pro and make you feel confident, by all means, go ahead. I just think it is better to build up good confidence by learning how to handle your camera better, so when the moment arises, you can get that shot, and produce stunning images.

If it is highly acclaimed, and you feel it is good. Go ahead and buy one. I, for one, will not risk putting on an unproven product near the power circuitry of my expensive camera body. I cannot take that risk because I cannot afford to buy a new camera body every other day.

The phottix grip is selling over 120. You might as well get a used original Nikon grip by topping up around $40-60 more. or top up 80-100 to get a new one.

It does look more "pro". :bsmilie:
Well, I got my d90 with the grip as I like to take vertical type of shots and it makes handling easier and personally feel it's more 'balance' in terms of weight tho stuffing into the bag is an issue for me as I don't like to have big bag packs. :sweatsm:

Any idea if it does boost th FPS on the D90? I'm curious to know - that may be a reason to think of one - if I'm going for FPS rate.

nope it doesnt boost the fps. my main reason for getting the d90's grip is because of the feel after adding it on. i don't mind the weight personally and i find it much nicer to hold, as my pinky finger isnt able to get a good hold on the side of the d90.

Nope. The grip for the D90 does nothing for the FPS.

Okay, no grips for me PERIOD... Besides, I'd prefer to save the weight AND $$$ for the lens collection... :bsmilie:

Mucho gracias amigo!
