I’m not too sure about D600 but the D750 can program the AE/AF lock button as AF-ON though I wish it has a dedicated AF-ON button.
I usually select single-point AF & AF-C mode. Press the AF-ON once to lock the focus at the desired distance. If the subject moves forward or backward (to me), I’ll continue to press the AF-ON until I trigger the shutter.
If a subject is fast moving into the frame (like racing car or runner), I’ll pre-focus at a particular spot & trigger the shutter when the subject moves into that spot.
Just sharing my practice but I’m still learning. Do share yours if u have a different approach.
By the way, is the spot metering follows the focus point?

I've heard BBF is great for BIF so therefore good for action...I also believe it can be set up one point af lock and then it tracks subject/object point locked on (these newer rigs getting real smart someday be able to track whole flock of geese by individual bird haha)...I am not action shooter so I don't know for sure.

There are reasons I do not use BBF but I forgot why...haha

Sammy...you and me good at drifting off topic and writing novels bro but if someone is enlightened it is worth it. :D

Writing short stuff has never been my strong point here since joining CS all these many years heheh.. A little OCD I guess heheheh...

Agree on the use of multi-AF for sports.. I shoot birds once in awhile, and do use the tracking for bird in flight, and having tested the A7R2 (with its 399 points), its never enough points..

For me, focusing with center point was just an old habit from the earlier days of split-prism manual-focus. Having an AF-ON button made the transition easier.

I still don't get why the D600/D750 didn't have a dedicated AF-ON button though. (Used my friend's D700 before, and when i got my own D600 for budget reasons, i was so disappointed in the lack of AF-ON..)

It has a that option like e69087 said labeled shared with AE as well but you can change that setting. Yes for me .. no AF button option is a deal breaker for me with any camera. Once you have gotten use to it, it is instinctive and if you want real time tracking just keep holding on to the AF button as you track from your viewfinder. I don;t think more AF point is what I need but better fuzzy logic that can track more cleverly.

Exactly what i always do. Too many AF points also gets more confusing with shallow DOF as it will end up hunting more with focus breathing all over the place.

Thus I always tell especially newbies, to stop thinking about all the newest auto or program features..etc Leave all that for later. Focus on the fundamental of photography at its core functionality, Features that has been there for a long time has stayed there for a reason. That's taking control of what you shoot. If all you want is to buy a camera that the camera's marketing dept brag has the best this and that features to auto everything, you bring your new camera home, put everything entirely on auto-pilot ....it would be okay most of the time but unlikely the best result since it's left entirely to chance the programming in the IC chip. That's someone I call "person with a camera'. Which is still fine nothing wrong with that but where's the fun in that if you are someone who love taking photos heh..

When you have something like a D750, D7200 or any other full manual control cameras with so much powerful features, to not push your skill level to a higher level using the DSLR seem wasted. Nothing makes you feel more in control then to have all the auto program features turned off.

Just like drifting or racing a car. You can't get that little bit more out of it when you drive in auto gear changing, traction control..etc. You have to be on manual gear changing and playing the pedals and feeling the steering to make adjustments. You can't drift in automatic heheh.

For me right now, all I want for future cameras I would invest in are higher better ISO to noise ratio, color dynamic fidelity and an EVF. I am actually happy with just 16-24 megapixel. That megapixel would mean I have no real need for newer lens with better optics quality for those super high megapixels of 40 and above.

I think for me, a camera with high dynamic range sensor with the ability to capture a high contrast scene with good details will be great.

May I know why is that so ? why don't you like more choices ?

What if you want to focus on something that is out from the centre ?

Thanks

When i look through the viewfinder, i want to know exactly where I am focusing, dead center, then i will recompose.
I want to control my tools and not let the tools control me.

but my experience with Nikon's super tele lenses and sports, I find that the technology works way faster than me. So it really depends on what you are shooting.

Thanks sifu Ortega, when will be your new talk ? During your Panasonic GX8 talk, I meant to ask you to show me about recomposing but at that moment I forgot the word "recompose" then I ended up asking you to show me something else instead.

Ok, the question about recompose is this.

Let's say I focus (half-press)on a person's face which is on the right hand side of the centre in the ViewFinder (so the AF focus points square at the face turned red). Then while still holding & half-pressing the shutter button, I move/pan the camera until the face that I previously focussed on is now on the left hand side of the centre in the ViewFinder.

Then when I full press the shutter button, which will be in focus ?

a) the original face ?

Or

b )the red square of right hand side of the View Finder ?

Thanks

once you achieve focus with the half press of the shutter button or AF On button, it should lock focus.
while still on half press, you can recompose and full press when you are ready.

On the GX8, with it's touch screen, I used my nose to select focus, unconventional but it works

Yes! :D

The D5 camera will feature 153 autofocus points with a new focusing module that has a larger coverage area. There’s also a native high ISO of 102,400, up from ISO 25,600 in the D4S.

A redesigned Nikon “swoosh,” Logo, a new ISO button, no MODE button on top, a relocated video recording button, and a microphone holes about the D5.

2016 - EARLY....

Sigma lens on it..... this clearly isn't a D5 that is just sitting around Nikon HQ, this is IMO a sneak-shot of someone in the field who is indeed under NDA, and may just get in trouble for this.

The word D5 is of different resolution with rest of picture and there is also perspective error - D5 was dead flat facing the reader when there should be some perspective change. Fake.

Probably kapok'ed from D4 and edited.

Anyway, keeping my D4s for now, wait for D7S then say.

Just tempted to get another D750.
