after browsing thru pages and pages of reviews, here's what i got so far from reviewer anecdotes:

1. excellent performance at iso 1600? check.
2. comparable AF performance to EP3? check.
3. improved dynamic range from EP3? check.
4. same sensor as G3's? unknown.
5. Can shoot 9fps for more than 1 sec? who cares? if you're into sports photography, there are better choices out there.

I see a lot of people comparing EM-5 to G3 and whether the price difference is worth it. For me, the build quality, 2 dials and the improved IBIS is more than worth the price difference. As a former pentax user, I would liken this to comparison between FA35 and FA31 lens. No contest :)

Weather sealed too!

My GX1 is known to under expose by 2/3 EV to prevent highlight clipping. Olympus is just trying to say that they are better on the picture output?

Perhaps. As I've said, the difference is probably immaterial to the E-M5's target market (i.e. amateurs and enthusiasts). Just curious: does the GX1 meter tell you to underexpose under M mode? Or it only happens in the semi-auto modes?

Indeed. Over the weekend I was just reconsidering whether I should stick to my 60D. Then I remembered how I don't bring it to memorable but potentially wet places, e.g. scenic spots very near or at sea, parasailing, boating and rafting, etc. How I wish I could take photos back then! The weather sealing on the E-M5 seems good enough to endure all these activities as long as I don't submerge it in water. I can probably gently hose off the saltwater or at least wipe with a wet cloth without fearing water damage.

Too bad there is only one weather-sealed lens now. I hope more will come, e.g. the Panasonic f/2.8 zooms.

get the MMF3 and HG Zuiko lens. All weather sealed.

Is the 14-54mm mk2 the only CDAF supported HG Zuiko lens?

yes. actually get OMD5 +12-50mm, get the free MMF3 + Zuiko 50-200mm. it is a good weather sealther combo.

I used EP1/3, EPL2 + MMF1 + zuiko 50-200mm give very good result. Just that the AF hunt and it takes at least 2.5sec to lock the focus.

Why do you want to use ISO6400 rather than say ISO3200?
Because in dark areas, you want to have a faster shutter speed of perhaps 1/30s.

If you use ISO6400 expecting a 1/30s as in your backup camera (say GH3 or whatever), but the exposure on your EM-5 shows it needs a shutter speed of 1/20s, lower than what you want. Cause the exposure system in EM-5 knows ISO6400 is ISO4000 and not ISO6400 as stated.

Basically, Oly is short-changing you. You get ISO4000 performance because of a reduction in shutter speed, not due to an improvement in technology.

Not short-changing anyone, the system come with different part of technology. sensor, lens, processor, IS.. all this make up a sensor. I was E510 user. I can do low light with 1/30s with iso 400 with IS on and hand held. I can manage to get nice keeper. Can other system do this? if you comparing iso only you can compare part by part.

Weather seal + 5 axis IS + high iso + light weight + small form factor = EM-5

Weather seal + 5 axis IS + high iso + light weight + small form factor..

you should add VF and flip LCD to the list.

not only EM5 is the 1st cam to have 5 axis IS, it is also the only weather sealed mirrorless cam. w
with 12-50mm kit lens, 9fps, and the AF is faster than most of the DSLR. when you price in all these, i would say, though the price is on the high side, it worth the money.

One experience to share, I do macro with E-30, my standard setup is e30 + tc14 + ZD50mm + FL36. I can do it hand held without tripod. My image still sharp and usable. :)

ANyone getting any extra battery with this camera? I am intending to get hold of one before I fly off once I get this combo.

But if you compare E-M5 w Pany G1x and G3, you'd see their ISO performance is about the same, w E-M5 slightly better at ISO3200 and above, but not really too much different anyway. Especially if it's true that E-M5's ISO is actually less sensitive than what it says.

At higher ISO (1600 and above), their details in shadow just can't compare with D7000 or K5. As to noise level, even at ISO 200 you can see some noise under shadow in E-M5 photos, same as G3 which I've been using.

There are a few threads on DPR where people who used the comparometer see the EM-5 image quality better than Nikon D4 and Pentax 645D!

abandoned my GF1 for this.

pre-ordered without deposit from AP for just the body. will use with the oly 45/1.8 and panny 20/1.7...perfect set for my needs.

i'm twitching madly every day waiting for it...:bsmilie:

The Zuiko 50-200 weighs 995g. Unless you already have it as part of your existing 4/3 system and are using the m4/3 camera as backup, I don't think it makes much sense to get this monster lens to pair with your small-and-light E-M5.

That's like letting the tail wag the dog, isn't it?

Unfortunately, there's no equivalent telezooms (IQ and weatherproof) of this calibre at this point.

I think my weather-sealed 50/2 will see a whole new lease of life with the omd!

Let's bug Panasonic to release the 12-35 f/2.8X and 35-100 f/2.8X soon! 4/3 Rumors have it that these X zoom lenses (not necessarily power zooms) will be weather sealed. They also look smaller and lighter than the 4/3 Zuikos and the various APSC equivalents, but I doubt they will be cheap. Worst thing is, they won't arrive in the first half of this year. (FT4)

Ya looking forward too, also doubt will be cheap, the current X lenses are already priced higher than kit lenses albeit more features. Though optically it might not seem to be as good as the Olympus high grade lenses 14-54/12-60. As long as the 12-35 & 35-100 can have as good performance as Oly equivalent and priced lower than the Oly 12-35/35-100 F2 which are SHG, there should still be a market, for the enthusiast.
