Does it matters whether Canon is market leader or not? Innovation and first to market comes with steeper price. As long as Canon continues to wow with its integration of technologies and keep price affordable.

:thumbsup:

What impresses me abt the 7D is the 100% viewfinder for this class (i think it uses the same eyecup as the 1D series) and its transmissive LCD for compensation of non-interchangeable focusing screens, thus displaying different information on the viewfiner itself.

Even the new EF-S lenses have a new design, similarly for the 100 f/2.8L macro.

I wonder how good is the transmissive LCD and what kind of information customization is allowable?

Grip looks more flush?

I thought 7d already can have spot metering tied to individual AF points. Also have "spot" AF where it will AF on a smaller area.

Unfortunately not.

Lets be objective here, the d300 when it came out cost less than 3k and that was 2 years ago. Would you call that a "steeper price" for innovation and first to market? The d300 caused many wows in nikon land due to it's 51 AF points and 8fps similiar to the wows in canonland now. Only thing is that there is really not many things that the 7d can do that the 2 year old d300 cannot. Video is one of them but what else? Please don't tell me 19 cross type AF points. It is not important how many cross type AF points there are, more important is how well they work and the reviews have already stated that the nikon 51 AF points are more accurante than the canon 45 AF points. Btw I don't think canon would have launched a 7d if not for the d300.

Really? Which site/magazine has OBJECTIVE test results that verify this?

The closest I have seen is this: fotoMAGAZIN (Germany) No. 5/2008, p30ff.

Gear:
* 40D: Canon 40D + EF 70-200 f/2.8 L IS USM
* 1D: Canon 1D-mkIII + EF 70-200 f/2.8 L IS USM
* 1Ds: Canon 1Ds-mkIII + EF 70-200 f/2.8 L IS USM
* D80: Nikon D80 + Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 VR G IF-ED
* D300: Nikon D300 + Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 VR G IF-ED
* D3: Nikon D3 + Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 VR G IF-ED
* E3: Olympus E3 + Zuiko 50-200 f/2.8-3.5 ED SWD
* K20: Pentax K20D + DA* 50-135mm f/2.8 ED IF SDM
* A700: Sony Alpha 700 + 70-200 f/2.8 G SSM

Result (Test #4 -- Relative ratio of out-of-focus shots, central AF):

1. A700: 2.1 %
2. 40D: 6.4 %
3. D3: 9.2 %
4. D300: 10.0 %
5. 1D: 11.7 %
6. 1Ds: 14.3 %
7. E3: 17.8 %
8. D80: 23.2 % (but 10.7 % with multi-field AF)
9. K20: 25.6 % (and 43.6 % with multi AF)

Result (Test #3 -- Absolute number of in-focus shots, central AF):

1. 1D: 30.2 images
2. D3: 21.6 images
3. 40D: 20.6 images
4. A700: 15.3 images
5. 1Ds: 15.0 images
6. D300: 13.5 images
7. D80: 8.6 images (10.7 with multi AF)
8. E3: 7.4 images
9. K20: 5.8 images

Method:

* Continous shots (burst, continous AF aka AF.C) of an approaching red Chrysler PT cruiser, tripod mounted and panned centering onto radiator grill. Photograph besides road. Road straight. Test done on a closed military airport.
* Controlled speed: 100 km/h (62 mph).
Starting photo burst at 100m distance (109 yards, 328 ft). Stopping when passing by.
Time to drive through 100m: 3.6s.
* Focal length: 35mm equivalent of 200mm (135mm for K20).
* Aperture: f/2.8 or widest (Olympus).
* Shutter: 1/320 or shorter.
* Light: Daylight overcast with grayness. Constant conditions.
* Storage: JPEGs onto Sandisk Extreme III.
* Statistics: 6 series, averaged.

Short verdict:
Outstanding: 95-100% (relative ratio of in-focus shots)
Excellent: 85-95%
Good: 75-85%
Average: 25-75%
Poor: 0-25%

Then we have:

* Outstanding: A700
* Excellent: 40D, D3, D300, 1D, 1Ds
* Good: E3, D80, K20

Wow. What a complicated test to carry out. Would love to read this test in full. I think the most interesting thing about the 7D is the new AF system. Lets see how it really fairs.

Canon has finally come out a reasonable good 1.6x crop DSLR. Remember, EOS 40D to 50D was not very exciting.

I guess that EOS 7D will be used to set the base for future models. Hence, the next replacement model for EOS 7D will not be that exciting.

If the price of EOS 7D is < $2,700, it will be very attractive. It won't be above $3,000 so as not to compete with EOS 5D mk II.

The best thing that i like about the EOS 7D is the 100% viewfinder coverage. Finally, Canon has incorporated the on-demand grid lines which Nikon has already incorporated donkey years ago.
USM,

I think this post of yours all in all sums up what the 7D is all about. I think we tend to forget that although 7D is a single digit model, we always compare with 5D2. It is after all the big brother to the XXD series of semi professional camera and not in competition with the FF 5D2.

Good to see 1.6X cropped camera with such impressive features. I am definitely putting this cam in my 'want to buy one day' list.

What a day, what a camera, and Oh Boy, how it can make grown ups little boys again. Welcome 7D!!!!!

What's that button on the side of the grip dial on the new 7D?

Was looking at the internal flash on the 7D

i dun see any infra red outlet to let it command other flash leh ... where is it arh?

the control and trigger comes from the pop up flash. like all the other brands.

At first thought, i thought it can show different types of grid lines directly. For example, focusing screens are the physical, hardware type. Then the transmissive LCD acts in the same way, except it's in digital, software type. :)

New 7D introduced, so time for 500D to drop price?
50D drop price? lens drop price?

waiting waiting...:sweat:

wow, the humble 40D seems to fare extremely well in its focussing, even compared to full frames!

Would be nice if that is the way it works. Wonder how many buttons have to press to digitally change the focusing screen, or is it voice activated. :bsmilie:

When 7D arrives, then just go test drive.
