Canon G1X !

Looks like 999 it is... meaning about $900+ at "lobang" level...

add 58mm Filter Adapter FA-DC58C (price? about 40sgd?)
add 58mm Close-up Lens 250D (def NEED this for any sort of macro capabilities... pricing in sg anyone? i'm seeing around 140sgd)
add spare Battery Pack NB-10L (with 250 shots capacity, i need another batt too... about 50sgd?)

looks like i have to set aside at around 1.2k

Lucky i sold my g12 the moment the g1x was announced... lessens this sting by half.

Looks like I was quite spot on regarding the price and the release dates here.

I am considering this camera and Lumix G3.
Just wondering if it would be a fair comparison between this camera and the Lumix G3.

Hmmm... plenty of debate on the interwebs about g1x vs m4/3...

clear winner? sadly no such thing... one thing to consider tho... for the g3 which is an awesome camera btw (my bro-in-law has one), to get roughly the same range as the g1x, you need to invest seperately in another lens (the kit lens are quite bad). Closest is the powerzoom 14-42 (f3.5 - 5.6, 28 - 84mm equiv), or the none-powerzoom equivilent... additional $$$ and slower lens than the g1x has...

BUT... of course the advantages are that you are not constrained to that one set of lenses... there's also fast fast prime lenses available...

thank you for your advice. I guess I will see what deals are available for G1X at the IT show.
I like the G3 after trying it in a camera shop. Will have to see if I like the G1X in terms of ergonomics.

To me comparing G1X and G3 is like comparing apple with sushi...two are different types of camera. Even if G3 wins in IQ etc, it may lose in compactability because both cameras are designed not having exactly the same purpose in mind. Comparing G1X and other high end compacts make more sense to me.

Would be quite attractive once they add it to the Privileged Purchase Program though .. 20% off the MSRP !!! ;p :D

think i'll wait for this, got a old canon film dslr to trade-in

Looking at the AF performance feedback, I will probably skip this. Seriously thought I'd get a G-series Canon again (old G-series user) but given what is coming out in the market these days, I'd think that Canon may have missed the boat again...

Read from Digital Life today, it seemed like Canon G1X should be available in Singapore now or soon, RRP price at S$999.

There, there... a perfect vindication for me. :bsmilie:

I think Canon has got it right.
There is a group of "in between" armature.
Serious enough to appreciate all the manual controls but not that fanatic enough to bother changing the lens.
I for one bought a G10 and later upgrade to a DSLR but sold it off within months because of the bulk and the trouble of changing lens.
I can't imagine packing all the camera stuffs in my travels ( As I have said, I'm not that fanatic)
The current high end compact is always handicapped by the small sensor.
Hopefully the G1X can have the best of both world. Compact with great IQ.
It will be great if they can come up with a 24-120 lens!

Cnet reviewed that this is more for people who wants better IQ than compact cameras and a little more control. However this will target people who shoot "general" genre such as travel landscape, events, portraits. The "huge" minimum focusing dist would make it unsuitable for marco and the af might not be suitable for fast action.

Big sensor yes, but not really an all rounder compact, which I would like to have when I go travelling or carry it on day to day basis. Shoot landscape, food, flowers, street etc.

Small sensors aren't that bad nowadays and I am still weighing should I forgo the big sensor for more all rounded capabilities.

That's why I still carry my S95. :D Big sensors and fast lenses for low light and bokeh, small sensors for convenience and macros. No one tool fits all.

Totally agreed. I sold my g12 and I am getting the G1X, but i am well aware of it's limitations. My g12 took AMAZING macros (by macros i mean the FUR on caterpillars. I don't consider food shots "macro" at all!).

The G1x has zero macro capabilities (although it easily takes good food shots based on the many sample images i've seen), something i find very hard to accept, but got used to the idea eventually.

But the future looks very very interesting. Give it another 2 years...

Camera phones with 1/2" sensors, 1cm macro focusing and 2.0f, 24mm x 3 lens.

Pair that with a large sensor compact (Canon G2x by then? I heard Sony is coming out with it's own version too...) and... wow. Talk about amazing picture opportunities on the fly.

Personally, i don't think we will see a combination of the two. As in true compact size (s100 size) with huge sensor, fast lens (2.0f across 5 x zoom) that retracts into body, DLSR level autofocus speeds and 10fps. For those who say it's possible, i know you will bring up the nikon 1 series speeds, the sony nex series body/sensor sizes, etc... but if you research the physics involved, there's simply no way (unless a technology to bend light can be discovered!).

Saw the photo gallery at Dcresource just now and really like the sample pictures taken with the G1X. They are sharp and the colour are good too. Also considering the G1X now.

Anyone heading down to PC show tomorrow? Remember to let us know what promo they have for the G1x!

Hi,

Another sample out in DCWatch Impress.

IT show pricing is $999 with:

1) 2 x 8gb sd card
2) Premium leather case
3) External video light

According to my lobang, if you have lobang at retail level, can easily get at $900 or even less, with all the above goodies MINUS the video light. So if you don't need the video light (can't see any use for it unless wanna shoot porno), then wait for the retailers to get stock will be a better option.

I had a chance to try out the G1X over the weekend. There are 2 things everyone should know;

1) besides the slow AF as mentioned before, the minimum focusing distance is 40cm to 1.5m! Even in Macro, minimum focussing distance is 20cm!

I only managed about 200 shots with fully charge battery.

How is the quality of the bokeh? Only 200 shots? Really??

Some guy in dpreview said they can shoot 400+ shot without problem.
