The size is pretty huge but having the advantage of making the zoom lens compact. Seems like af isn't that good...

I was crossing my finger on the OVF but seems not that great too.

Yeah, saw that clip before... I am pretty disappointed if functioning actually was like what was being shown. For that type of money, I am hoping that the AF system (speed and accuracy) will actually be pretty the same or at least near to the micro4/3... but it seemed the speed is not really that amazing.

Did a bit of research and saw that the af speed hasn't improved from the G10 to G12, or even the S100. My S95 is much slower than the not-very-fast x100. So if canon hasn't improved the speed by A
LOT in the G1X, it's going to be really slow.

But I guess just like the x100 the other features, most notably the iq, color and dynamic range, would more than make up for the flaws.

I had a chance to try out the G1X over the weekend. There are 2 things everyone should know;

1) besides the slow AF as mentioned before, the minimum focusing distance is 40cm to 1.5m! Even in Macro, minimum focussing distance is 20cm!

2) the video record button is in a tricky position. I triggered the video accidentally 4 times within half a day use and on one occasion the video was triggered when the camera hit my waist (while I sling it on my shoulder) and I realize it 3.5mins later...

I only managed about 200 shots with fully charge battery.

Looks like Canon will have to make major improvements with the G2X next year.

that would have kill lots of potential buying interests.

May or may not. If it has excellent IQ, excellent auto WB, excellent dynamic range etc, might still be a classic. My X100 is full of annoying quirks (including sometimes saying "Try switching off the camera and switching it back on" and freezing), but I wouldn't trade it for anything because it has brilliant IQ, and a high ISO performance that puts my D7000 badly to shame. I rarely have to adjust anything that comes out of this camera!

True also. Indeed I am quite interested at this cam for my wife on trip, because of the flip screen and bigger than m4/3 sensor.
I can tahan slow AF, but 200 shot per battery does not sound good to me. For a day trip, it would require 3 batteries at least.
If for the price of SGD1,000, then it is a no buy from me.

Guess the no. of shots depends on usage style, e.g. how long do u keep your LCD screen on, brightness of screen etc.

I shoot an avg of about 300 shots a day during recent overseas holiday , so 200plus shots dun seems to bad.

I guess after using my DP1s most cam is consider fast and long battery life. lol.

Every camera got its pros and cons. Need to weight it out carefully.

I just received a mail from canon Malaysia. Member can preorder now. Rm2299 is the price. And only limit to 75 buyers each month. I wonder how much will it cost in sg. Hopefully below 900.

That's very useful info... thanks!

Well, now we have a very clear indicator of pricing in the region...

g12 (malaysia) = RM1,899.00 = 784 SGD
g12 (singapore) =749.00 SGD = RM1,812

Meaning singapore is roughly 4.4% cheaper

g1x (malaysia) = Rm2,299 = 950 SGD

THEREFORE

g1x (singapore) should be around 950 SGD - 4.4% = 908.2 SGD

Based on Canon's pricing style where they always end with a "9", I'm willing to bet SGD899 in singapore as SGD909 and SGD919 sound weird.

That's a really decent price!

On second thoughts... some models in Canon Malaysia site seem cheaper than Canon Singapore site... so SGD949 is a very likely outcome too...

Interesting calculation. But the price is not very attractive so far.

G12 at launch was $799 SGD. So how much would make the g1x attractive? $799 too? No going to happen. Wait for 1 year plus, and it will only drop by $50 like the G12.

$899 to $949 already makes it one of the cheapest in the world. Do the conversion of overseas price for yourself for: US = 799USD, UK = 700 pounds (!!!!!), europe 750eu... and people are snapping it up already.

You want cheaper than this at equivelant IQ means only left a few micro 4/3 models available.

(700 pounds is crazy lah! $1400 leh! I'll buy a NEX liao...)

Very logical calculation. 900 is quite a price for a Powershot, considering entry level DSLR is around 1000+, canon is really squeezing every juice out of the customer's pocket :D

The IQ and low light performance will probably greatly outshine an entry level DSLR with kit lens though, and you have the convenience of size and weight. Obvious downsides are focus speed and fixed lens, but I suspect that it won't make too much difference to many entry level DSLR buyers.

I think it's also a great second camera for DSLR owners.

Would be quite attractive once they add it to the Privileged Purchase Program though .. 20% off the MSRP !!! ;p :D

I guess street price would be at least 100 bucks cheaper? Then it is still competitive against other high end compacts like x10 and mirrorless bodies with 'kit lens' bundled.

Perhaps af can improve with subsequent firmware just like what Fuji did to x100.
