Canon G1X !

It seems like a good buy to me at USD799. After looking at the price of X100, X10 etc.

Its seems like a steal. Big sensor, High ISO shooting ability. F2.8 at wide end.

I have been a Canon Dslr user. But sometimes i am just too lazy to carry my DSLR out.
So over the years i also bought smaller high quality compacts like S90, Sigma DP1S.

DP1S have a great IQ, looks cool. But the overall user experience is not as easy.

Am really tempted to get Fuji X100. But after trying it out. Well despite the good IQ, the overall handling is not valued as high for me at the 1.6K range.

So on paper wise, its don't really lose much compare to X100, and fair better than X10. and is cheaper than both.

Just wonder why so much -ve comments on the camera. Its seems like a good balance camera to me :)

I have been waiting for compact system for me to bring in daily basis. I am looking for viewfinder in particular. Was abt to settle for nikon v1 with 10mm but the moment g1x is out I thought this really fits my requirement.

Have to see how good is the viewfinder. G12 vf does not appeal to me.

When the Canon 5D was first released, there were TONS and TONS of negative criticisms too... mostly from the Nikon/Pentax fanbois who believed FF was a niche market, that they were completed satisfied with APS-C, blah, blah, blah... that went on and on until the Nikon D3/D700 got released... :D

waiting for this to use for videos, since my d700 got no video function.

Will check out the price and if its OK, will get this.... My old G series needs to be replaced and a large sensor compact will definitely help. The video capabilities also look interesting.

Too bad Canon did not make this into a compact EOS mount - they could have done so technically.... and it would have been interesting.

I was thinking about getting a Panasonic Lumix G3 after doing some research.

This camera might change my mind.

any idea when this camera will enter our shores?

if G1X costs more than SG$1000, that is a big price jump as compared to G12.

Hopefully it will come out soon. Perhaps it might arrive just in time for the March IT show.

I'm guessing SGD$1,099 rrp in Singapore... canon loves the $???99 kind of pricing.

March? So long meh? HK and SG i thought lauch dates pegged quite close one? This week or the next i reckon...

Lens is a bit slow, f/2.8-5.8. Would be awesome if it was f/2.0-2.8 like the X10.

This looks awesome !!!

And why its a significant departure from the "G" range of years past :

Except for the wide end, this will make a really good "carry around everywhere" camera !!

Check the Canon website (Singapore)... no mentioning of the G1X at all... guess it will not come in that fast. Check Canon website (hong kong), suggested retail price for G1X is HK$5980.

That's what many people think... but if you read this previous post, you might change your mind (especially compared to a small sensor cam like the x10):

For those of you who are obsessed by the manufacturer's stated apeture ratings, and field of view (why no f2.0?!?!? why not 24mm?!?!?! etc) please take a look at this and don't be conned by the numbers printed on the front of the camera...

35mm equivalent FOV & DOF - Canon G1X Compared to Other Cameras: Canon Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

This means that in REAL WORLD terms, the G1X will have wide angles as good as (if not better) than most micro four thirds lenses with 14mm "wide" lenses, and more importantly, it has superior DOF (yes, even at the tele end) that blows away ANYTHING that isn't a DSLR. In fact, it's as good as a DSLR!

I too was disappointed when the specs for the G1x came out... but after doing some research, I realise that it's actually quite... quite amazing.

999 sounds better! hahaha...
hope that it will come out soon so that I can get used to it by the time I go USS in late March. :)

Still, it would be so much nicer if it was f/2.0-2.8. I'm guessing though that the larger sensor would make the lens too expensive and big. The larger sensor would mean considerably larger lenses for the same equivalent focal length, and larger, heavier and more expensive glass.

I agree... currently based on all the test shots so far, the g1x high iso pics already on blow away all compact cams, and on par/better than most aps-c dslrs... so whichever camera maker to come up f/2.0-2.8
in the g1x form factor/sensor size and focal range without gimongous lenses COMFRIM game changer... super exciting times in the near future guys!

Sorry guys... got news from a very reliable source that the G1x will only be available here at the march IT show... hopefully this source is incorrect, but that is HIGHLY unlikely.

Thanks for the heads up.

looks like my guess is quite correct. Time to start saving up, I guess.
