Sometimes you only wish people would talk about photography(pictures) as passionate as they talk about some high-tech-do-it-all-droolable-basically the same camera- upgrade at all cost, gear.
It's important to let newbies know that you don't need the newest, best whatever camera to do what basically can be done with a puny D30/60. It sets out all the wrong messages down the line.
The experts should know that and teach that.

Seriously this issue has been raised and discussed before. The only reason why you're reading all this stuff now is because - look to the top :

There AF Assist button (ie the 3rd button that 10D has on the top right corner) is missing from the 20D.

1) Cant bring AF to the centre @ a press of the button.

2) Does that means you can do FEL if you have set the AF to the AE (*)button?

You gain some, you loose some. But perhaps you gain more than you lose in this case.

3) Both the 50mm std lens (f1.4 & 1.8) dont have distant feedback capability, hence no ETTL-2 for this 2 lens and a few others. Maybe canon should look into this issue before coming out with the 2 new EFS lens.

4) The ability to use AA battries is definitly a plus, even though that means a new battery grip.

5) 8.2m compare to 6m on 10D, typically more nosie will be genrated for same sensor size. In this case, have to wait and see.

True on consumer digital P&S, in general. Not true on DSLR... noise processing algo and sensor design matters more. The 20D's CMOS sensor has been redesigned and the DIGIC II is new too. In fact, according to canon, the 20D ISO1600 noise level is equivalent to 10D's ISO400 <- That is a major plus point!!! How much this is true or just bs, we'll just have to wait for the samples to be released...

I salute Canon for releasing a consumer DSLR that can threaten the market share of its Pro-series DSLRs. There are improvements to the 20D in areas important to 'pros' including, shorter shutter lag, shorter mirror blackout, improved AF, 5 fps.

Canon could simply have increased the 10D by 2 Mp and cut the price slightly and it would still sell well since its main competition is an old old model (in DSLR terms). But I guess they want to anticipate what the D100 successor can do and beat it

Supposing the new 20D is abt $2,500 RRP, $2,200 (AP or CP) why bother the 10D unless it drops till abt $1600-$1700 rite? then if you have the option to mount cheaper efs lens. Supposing you have the 17-40 and or 28-135 your first move is to sell both lenses to rise funds to get the new efs lenses to use for both bodies if you decide to keep the 300D as back up?

From Canon press release - the EOS 20D digital SLR delivers superb low light performance and exceptionally low noise, even at high ISOs. In fact, images taken at ISO 1600 are approximately equal in noise to those taken with the EOS 10D model at ISO 400.

that means the noise reduction in 20D is pretty high despite higher resolution.. Wondering how does it compare to 300D which had a fairly low noise even at ISO800..

Seems like it'll still be more ex than in US leh...

more ex becos shops here want to sell more & consumers here willing to pay thru their noses. so many times i've seen, its cheaper to just buy on-line overseas, incl shipping & GST. i thot s'pore is one of the lowest import tax countries, no?

btw, 300D is now $1.4k w/o lens & $1.7 with goodies.

Slimmed down is right, rounded I would feel not, around the flash housing area, the 10D is very smoothly curved. Yeah definitely button layout is taken from the 10D, and I didn't say the 20D had a control layout similar to the D30/60, but shapewise I was left feeling like the 20D wasn't as smoothly done as the 10D was; I looked at the comparison images on this page of DPreview:

But then, the 20D's controls are further evolved from the 10D also.

I am not an industrial designer but I have to agree with r32. The 10D looks slightly better. Especially if you compare the battery grips. The 10D battery grip looks like it is part of the 10D the 20D battery grip looks like they took the 10D grip cut in the top part to fit the 20D.

I suspect Canon took the 10D design and made some design modifications to reduce the cost of production. It will be cheaper because it was manufactured to a price point to kill the competition.

The B&W mode is a bit silly, if you ask me. After you capture an image and decide that another colour filter would look better, it's too late to change your mind. Better to capture all the colours first and decide later using PS.

black and white mode is not stupid if you need to show your client on the spot what's happening.

Moreover, it makes photographing in B&W much more enjoyable. Wish that the Pro series cams had that function as well..

got quoted $2280 for a brand new 10D at TKfoto earlier today. is that the 20D effect manifesting itself already? :think:
