Wow. that really a good news. don't know whether Vivo got a sample camera for testing?

Just called Canon. The 60D is NOT available for purchase through their Privilege Purchase Programme. Grrr ... .

I wonder how will the street price be
Just saw the RRP for 50D is $1899 and 60D is $1599 on Canon Website. Seems like 60D would be much cheaper...

Wow! Available in Singapore already. Who will be the first to post that they've got the 60D? Has anyone seen availability in the stores yet... confirmed? What about the VivoCity showroom? Is there a demo to see?

2 questions:

Does any know if the 60D can display blinking highlights with full image shown on screen? Something like the Nikon function. Currently my 500D will only show blinking overexposed highlights when i change the display during playback, and my picture becomes very small.

The exposure compensation for stills is +-5 right?

what do you mean Nikon can display blinking highlights?

Exposure compensation ±3 stops in 1/3-stop increments (Still photos: ±5 stops)

For Nikon cameras (i only know the D90 and the D300), when you view pictures, you can enable blinking highlights, and your photos will flash overexposed washed out areas. However for my 500D, i too can enable this but only after i press the display button once, and my picture will become half the size on my LCD, and will show other data such as iso and shutter speed. But i wanna see the blown highlights without shrinking my picture..

I tried the 60D at the Canon showroom in VivoCity last evening. Quick takes:

a) AF is slightly faster than the 550D (which I have), but definitely slower than the 7D. Ditto for mirror black-out.
b) I miss the joystick! Not used to the directional pad that's mounted co-axially with the Quick Control Dial.
c) Flip out LCD screen is a nice feature, though may not be a necessity for many of us used to not having one on a DSLR.
d) Feels very solid in the hand. Grip is nicely sized (I've always found the 550D's grip to be too small for my right hand).
e) The button layout is slightly different from the other Canon DSLRs, e.g. for the main mode dial, you have to depress the centre before you can switch the mode. This was implemented in some of the older EOS film bodies and personally I don't like it.

I'll probably stick with my 550D as the upgrade premium is about $500 (sell 550D at $900+ and buy 60D at $1400+), and not convinced it's worth the money.

Cheers!

My findings mostly agree with yours, especially with item "D". The 60D is very well built ergonomically.... it just feels good in my hands. It also feels solid. The other thing I liked was that the LCD was very bright and sharp. The flip out screen to me was awkward but I could see the potential of this feature. I am sure that the awkwardness would disappear over time. I also found the mode button a little challenging because of the centre lock mechanism that has to be depressed. Again, this is something that I am sure I could get used to. Lastly, the IQ of the 60D was great. Canon did a good job in this area.

On the downside, the new Nikon D7000 is likely to give the 60D a run for its money. Now that we know that the Nikon has outspec'ed the 60D by a certain margin, people coming into photography for the first time, may be swayed to buy the Nikon. Even some Canonites will jump ship to the Nikon armada. But I believe that this market segment will be a small percentage, as the investment in Canon glass will keep most individuals within the confines of the Canon nation.

I believe that the group most likely to upgrade will be those who have "grown up" with xxxd models (350D, 400D, 450D, 500D) and are ready to upgrade to something more sophisticated. The 60D has a lot to offer this group and will satisfy many people looking for more flexibility, power and options.

They have the image preview function to display overblown highlights - e.g. whether the bright sky above are overexposed too brightly that you can't salvage those areas... When you flip through the image preview "pages", the blown highlights will blink for you to see - you can ask yourself if you need to reshoot with a lower EV value... very useful besides depending on the histogram alone...

hmmm now i am thinking 60d or 550d is the better choice...

some ppl think 550D is too small for hand-grip, hence they bought battery grip cost around 120-150SGD.. if 60D give a better grip and you dont need to buy the battery grip, the price different around SGD300

i'm a 500d user... not likely to 'upgrade' cos don't see the point in spending so much extra when my 500d can get me the results i want.. maybe those who have used the older models may see a need to buy sth new, but i think the 500 is still a workhorse that won't disappoint if you're not asking for professional quality like a 5D...

also the flexibility in the 500d comes in the form of weight and size... allowing me to pack it in my bag everyday, regardless of where i'm headed...

maybe in the future, i will think of "upgrading" but, it will be something more than a 60D

Just went to vivo showroom to check out the camera for - get this, 2 HOURS STRAIGHT - just to try out the 60D. Time to share what i liked and didnt..

LIKES
1) The creative filters can be used on jpegs as well, contrary to what the canon commercials says. On the commercials they seem to imply that you can only use them on raw pictures, but evidently its not true.

2) The ergonomics were good. Not too big like the 50D but much more comfortable than the 500D. Also the shutter slapping sound was nicer than the 500D haha.

3) Able to choose AF points from the 8-direction d pad so can select the AF points easier than scrolling through like the 500D.

4) The 5.7 FPS was good enough for my use. I dont need a machine gun AKA 7D.

5) when tuned to 6400 ISO, noise was not VISIBLE at all if i didnt zoom in. Its definitely an upgrade from my 500D.

6) Compared to the 7D, the top buttons had only 1 function each, which made it easier to choose the function that i wanted to adjust.

Dislikes
1) Customization wise not as good as the 7D. Focusing screen not able to change from the defaults. Perhaps was due to the measley 9 AF points only.

2) Didnt feel much difference with the weight of the 7D and the 60D. However the 7D was a tad bigger.

3)The camera felt sluggish. When i was scrolling through the playback the scrolling wasnt responsive enough. Lets say i use the scroll wheel to wheel through 20 pictures to picture 7891, but when the camera "settles down", it will show 7892 instead. And the pictures took more than a moment to display the resolution correctly from the blurry image.

4) The top dial was kinda rigid. What i mean is that if you place ur finger at the correct angle and scroll it, its fine. But when you try to use a lower angle to scroll it, it gets "stuck" for a while then with enough force you can move it again. Wonder if this is only for the showroom model. Hope it is.

Thats about it for now. Anyone care to add on?

Bro

how you fine the AF of the 60D... was it fast?? I am using a 400D... and having AF problem... in low light and white wall situation.... I doubt you test it in low light as vivo city Canon is brightly lit..

I suspect with Nikon release, Canon 60D prices will fall soon... and I suspect even 7D could be affected..... I guess will wait for 3-4 months then hoot.... as most bugs would be eliminated by then, if any....

I dont know how other CSERS test AF, but for me i usually fire the shutter in a panning manner under ONE SHOT AF mode to see how many hits and misses. Usually the places that misses are low contrast areas, which cannot be helped. Low-light situations are another thing evidently, and YES that is one thing that i cant test in the Canon showroom. But is the premium of 600+ worth it from the 60D to the 7D? unless you really need it (or want it for that matter), then go for it. Upgraders from the xxxD and xxxxD should just get the 60D for the more balanced weight with heavier lenses and the top LCD which will prove useful in many situations..
