the D7000 win hands down if not for the fps
personally i feel that a high fps is important.... my videos with my 500D gets rather jittery sometimes at 30fps

anyway how many of the D7000 af-points are cross-types?

EDIT:

OMG... THE D700 HAS "video with continuous AF and the option of connecting an external stereo mic."
D7000 won me over

Solid body, affordable, larger VF, can take all Nikon F lenses including the legacy Ai/Ais, will be huge factors to many like me to go home to Nikon.

9 points are cross type.

I think the 60D really has a hard fight ahead of it, not in the upgraders market but in the new purchasers market. People who are considering joining the DSLR camp and choosing Nikon and Canon will find the D7000 pretty impressive on the grounds of build quality perception (magnesium alloy perceived to be better) and the AF set up.

Equalling Canon's 9 cross AF but with an additional 30 more standard points!

The 2 cameras are on different turfs, with different targets. Doesnt make sense to compete and compare in the first place. The d300s has been around for some time, as such a new one with similar specs is not surprising. On the other hand the 7D has only been launched a year, no way in hell would they wanna kill it that fast with a upgraded spec 50D. The 60D was intended to target the average consumer, not so much a hobbyist, but obviously it depends on the individual. Spec wise definitely Nikon win hands down, but the decision to purchase the body or not has many other factors too, ie price and weight and not always FPS, magnesium alloy body and 100% VF.

canon is repositioning it's xxD series, i get that.

i think it is a marketing problem, the 60D, the DSLR, itself is brilliant and there is nothing wrong with it, but it's how consumer's perceive it that generated so much noise online (and with 67% of the people in this mini-poll saying that they are in fact disappointed with the 60D)

marketing objective of canon : reposition the 60D

canon done so brilliantly for the Product (features) part of their marketing strategy, the specs fits nicely in between the XXXD series (550D) and 7D.

but in my personal view, they neglected other factors like
  • Product (Naming)
  • Price
  • Timing

Product (naming)
named similarly to it's predecessors, it is natural for people to compare the 60D with the 50D or 40D, although the latter(s) are intended for a different market segment. Perhaps they should have used other names if they wanted to target a new segment of consumers, instead of repositioning a series of camera which already existed and have strong and rigid consumer perception
"target the average consume" as you've said? maybe?

Price ($1099 vs $1199)
this product is priced similarly to some other product from competitors, it is inevitable for people to compare the 60D with other products priced similarly even though the "other products" i mentioned are targeted at a different segment.
60D repositioned to lower market, but price maintained = people compare by price and see which cameras are more bang-for-buck

Timing
the 50D community has longed for an update to the xxD series, yes they should go for the 7D if they want more features, but some of the 50D users might be reluctant to pay for the 7D (perhaps different target segment in terms of income?).
With so much expectation, yet 60D was not what they expected, hence the buzz again

different turfs, but you must let consumers see the change in turf, the factors mentioned above kind of shadowed this change in turfs

i do agree with what you said about 7D and how canon not want to eat into their own pie
hence there is a rumored, let me emphasize on the word "rumored", that there will be something called the 3D (and not i'm not talking about 3 dimensional imaging)

anyhow this is my very personal opinion on the issue, so there's not really a right or wrong, but more of a agree or disagree. so be kind ;)

i have never used a dslr for video recording before, pls advice is all canon dslr can or cannot do external audio recording? if can, how much more do we have to spend on that? i asking cause i have never thought of this problem until seeing this thread.

thanks renzo:thumbsup:

i'm not well versed enough to answer this question
moreover it would be off-topic

but

how much more you have to spend on your external mic depends on the quality of sound you wish to achieve. i believe (correct me if i am wrong) that most mics uses a similar industrial standard plug/mount to connect to their recording devices. (maybe 3.5mm jack? i'm not sure). with a standard mount for mics it's really up to you to decide what mic you want to use

if this came out at the time of my first DSLR purchased, i might have followed suit
exactly like what ShaneKua said
anyway F-mounts, i'm not familar with nikon lens system, but are the F-mounts similar to the EF (full frame) mounts of canon ?

Bro the D7000 is not replacing the D300s but is an upgrade for the D90 - which as I recall, is frequently compared to the 50D even though the 50D is traditionally slightly higher in the market positioning. It's a given that the successors of each model, the 60D and D7000 would in some way be compared.

jittery might not be because of the fps. it could most likely be other factors. the fps will affect more when u shoot movement.

9 cross points on the d7000 but total of 39 af points.

btw, all the canon can connect external stereo mic since 5D2 leh.

500D cant hahahha :sweatsm:
and 550D came out after 3 months of my 500D purchases so.....-.-
i was trying to talk about the continuous AF in video mode in the very original post hahah

i'm sure my problem has to do the fps
(e.g. faster hand movements resulted in the jittery video)
i'm using class 6 kingstone SD card, so should be a problem for video
anyway we're going off topic
sorry TS

wonder how the 60D's video will be

this nikon new body gear will broke canon marketing strategic , even the professional feature like 100% Live View Coverage apply into this one . I love this competition , for low mid users will enjoy more advanced camera ;-)

I actually love the d7000 if not for the increased megapixels. They should have capped it at 12.3 like the rest, to render better low light pics. Another thing that pushes me away from nikon is the expensive lenses !! More expensive than canon by 10-20%...

oh iz it?!
nikon lens more expensive than canon?
didn't noe but after seeing this then realised.

i prefer canon is also of the weight.
wouldn't plastic body lighter to carry around than those heavier ones?

hmmm...

Yup Agreed! I prefer a lighter weight and now my 500D kinda outgrown me already since i yearn for more customizable functions and quick short cuts to the settings. Not to mention the articulating screen helps me take low angle shots easier. Btw is the focusing speed in live view improved? its really slow on my current body..

Hi Experts,
I have a silly question :embrass:
If this 60D w/o "AF-MA" is it difficult for a newbie to handle/use ?

Articulated LCD is costly to make.

;-)

hmm, seems like nikon is more generous, offering this feature on the cheaper model, d5k.

hmmm...

actually it's only partially true. the high end lens yes...
but for consumer range, nikon seems to have cheaper offer, just a few example equivalent lenses: 15-85 vs 16-85, 18-135 vs 18-105, 18-200 is/vr, 70-300 is/vr & etc..
may be canon have cheaper offer for other type of lenses, and i'm not aware :)

add on: nikon external flash seems cheaper too.

anyone notice the price of 60D is out on Canon's web?

I bet you the Nikon D7000 will easily rival the Canon 1D4 in high ISO performance. Wanna wait for samples? :)

Then, all those pixelpeepers will really stop b***hing about high pixel density sensors.
