:) understooded...

so

body -D200

lense -AF-S DX 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED [i am not sure if this is good/ex but i prefer wide to zoom...]
-AF-S DX 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G [is this the one with the D70s kit?]

flash -sb800

dry cabinet - not sure? hmmm [please reccomend]

like that can last me how long? of cos it is logical to start with D70s and slowly learn up.... but there isnt anything wrong starting with D200 right?:)

D200 + 18-200mm VR + SB800 good enough to start leaning

You should be aware that D200 is too uncompromising in capturing details. It will show up any deficiencies in the lens you use or your technique clearly. You would need to invest in top end lenses to pair up with a D200 and get your technique right. Otherwise you would be disappointed with the results.

Considering this, you might be better of starting off with a used D70, and pair it with A+ rated lenses. This combo has potential for giving you excellent results if you expose/focus correctly. Basically you will be the weakest link. Once you work with this combo long enough, you will come to a point where you will outgrow your camera. Then you will be ready to upgrade to a better body. Who knows by that time you have even more options.

So dont invest heavily on a body, invest on lenses, because they will last. Down the line if you find photography is not your cup of tea, you can always sell off the lenses with little loss.

Hear hear! Well said, couldn't have said it any better.

i prefer to be different. I would say skip the D70 and just get a D200 or 2nd hand D100 and skip the D70 altogether if you're serious into photography. if you just want to shoot for fun and want the 'shiok' feel of owning a DSLR then just buy a D70 or consider the D50 even.

It's not like a film body where you just change different film and you get different results and the lab process your negatives. The technology is stuck in the body and if you get a problematic body, the flaws will be stuck to every picture. Nothing too serious to worry about but now the post processing will be done by yourself.

I don't see why you can't get serious with photography with a D70/s or even a D50.

You've hit the point on the nail when you say that the technology is stuck with the body and bec technology changes so quickly, the difference in price between the D70s and the high premium of the D200 would be better invested in good glass which doesn't depreciate in value so quickly.

Why would you recommend that he buy a used D100 in your first paragraph and then write "if you get a problematic body, the flaws will be stuck to every picture" in your next?
:dunno:

i think my thoughts overlapped and I didn't do a good job typing it out.

I was not referring to the D100 in the 2nd para. I was referring to my D70's AWB shortfall. I had to spend lots of time correcting the AWB with my D70.

Of course you can get serious with a D70 or D50 for that matter. I mean almost everyone knows that it's the man behind the camera and all the stuff. Some can even quote me a famed journalist using an olympus prosumer (5050 i think) for his job or another that uses a P&S to cover concerts with professional results. :dunno: I've followed a CSer's work here and was surprised that his portrait series was shot with a Canon A80. He now uses a DSLR though.

ok.. maybe it's not a good thing to air my thoughts. i shall concur with the general consensus.

buy a 2nd hand D50, save the money and invest in good glass. there you go..

maybe I'm just a gear wanker that just fell in love with a D2X.

I don't get you. I've never got myself into any s**t with Nikon.

D200 - $2700
18-200mm VR -$1450
SB800 -$640

this sounds good...

will this sound weird to anyone?
D70s + 18-200mm VR - SB800??

Thats exactly what I'd get if I were starting out. The D200 is very demanding on lenses and the photographer, it will show the weaknesses of either if given the chance. Things you can get away with on a D70S will show up on a D200.

If you have the $$$ to spend, why don't you get D2X, so in this case there is not need to compare.....

i think it has been said many times before that the principle behind photography is the skill and eye of the photographer and that the camera and lens is but a tool to help achieve it. When buying a new camera it is often easy to get carried away with the latest models and technology especially if one is new to it. It would be safer, as many have advised to start with something basic, master it, and then move on to having a more advanced camera body because then you know how to properly utilise its features..

no point getting something so advanced just so people will look and go 'wow.. this guy is pro, look at his big camera and lens'.. the end result photograph is what counts.. no amount of camera resolution and superb white balance and sharp autofocussing will make up for bad composition and angle

just some thoughts!

Why not this combination instead?
D70s + 18-70 AFS Kit (new)
Nikkor 60mm Micro or Tamron 90 Macro (used but mint)
Nikkor-Zoom 80-200 AFD ED (used but mint)
SB800 (new or used)

You don't need VR or AFS to achieve good results.
Much maligned (unnecessarily) the 18-70 is a pretty decent lens optically. The only things I don't like about it is that it is DX and a G lens but what new Nikkor lens isn't one these days.

AF-S Micro 105/2.8G IF-ED VR? :) At least it's not a DX.

Nope.. Won't be wierd at all. I'm using that combi most of the time and I find it very convenient. I don't use the SB800 very often though, I like to shoot with ambient light and having VR is quite useful for that.

Doesn't matter. Just don't use it on FM2 or F3 or anything older than that. :) Can still use on F4 with P or S mode. Most of my non-G lenses have the aperture set to the minimum and locked there nowadays anyway. ;)
