How to know it is local set or grey? I got the quote from reputable shop here for about $13xx and $14xx for 17-55. That is why I thought the price diff between 17-55 vs 15-85 is about $250 which is not a lot if 17-55 is really so good. The price diff between the two in USA is USD350 in Amazon.

I read the review for 18-135mm EF-S IS STM from Amazon, it seems to say this is a good lens. I am not sure whether it is really good? I intend to get a Canon 650D so trying to see which lens is better.

You have to understand the better IQ and low light ability (f2.8) of 17-55 to justify the higher price.

Your 650D is going to be use for what purpose?
Traveling - extra wide angle is very Important!
Street photography - the extra length ( further distance ) is Important!
Children/ daily outings - the built in flash is Important!
17mm equals to 27mm
18mm equals to 28.8mm
15mm equals to 24mm

55mm equals to 88mm
135mm equals to 216mm
85mm equals to 136mm

You can decide now.

for travel i tend to shoot very very wide to include everything of the landscape, street, places.

in sg, i tend to shoot in the 70-200 to exclude singapore scene becoz im tired of seeing the same things.

Mainly use for children and daily outing and maybe some travelling.

Coming from m43, what I hate is the not so sharp image especially in low light with the kit lens. Also, the slow AF tracking which is a turn off. So what i want is something reasonably sharp even at wide open. Fast lens of course is good.

So below are the three choices:
1) 18-135 STM, which covers very good range, suppose to be good for video but not too sure is it sharp. Can get it rather cheap as kit lens i believe.
2) 15-85, which I was told it is reasonable sharp and cover a good range. But F3.5-5.6.
3) 17-55 F2.8 which people said is the king of the crop. Advantage should be constant F2.8 and good IQ. Cons is expensive, shorter range and heavy.

I am willing to pay more but trying to find the most suitable lens for my usage. Thanks in advance.

The 17-55 and 15-85 are very similar in sharpness and IQ. The major difference between the two is in their low light capabilities (f/2.8 vs. f/3.5) and focal lengths.

15-85 very good general walkabout lens. Good range and good IQ. Weight size just nice.

17-55 gd and sharp lens mainly for lower light area. Only thing range limited.

Both just my feel and used to always had a hard time deciding which to bring on my 7d

Thanks a lot for reply. It is great to know that both are equally good in sharpness and IQ.

I am not sure whether I need a F2.8, but I dislike the F3.5 using my m43 which normally have the max usable ISO at around 1600. Maybe 650D can give a better quality at said ISO3200 or even 6400?

I will also check what is the price different between the two to make a decision.

.

Most of time I try not to go more than iso 3200.
Had used 15-85 hand-held at night, still usable with iso3200.

Thanks.

I read that there are 3 stops or 4 stops of IS for the lens. I am wonder where can I get this info for EFS17-55 F2.8 and EFS15-85?

just go google the lens reviews and they should mention it in the reviews

Noise will creep in above iso800.

YMMV.

If you want to freeze fast movements w/o flash, IS will not help, so i think better go with faster lens. As a bonus they also gives you thinner DOF when you need it.

F/2.8 and faster lenses are generally more expensive, but i personally believe it's a good investment.

But again it goes back to your needs. Canon 15-85, although not really a fast lens, gives you good range and great image quality :)

My 2c.

15-85. Almost has the same IQ of the 24-120 L lens

15-85 so far so good.

but the EOS450D is really 'artistic' at iso 1600 n aperture for 15-85 is 3.5-5.6. its crazy! lolxxxxx

not everybody' food so good enuff for me so far.

for low light, turn to 50 f1.8 to get by ....

IMO, I believe the sigma 30mm ff1.4 is the best choice. Renders colours well. Screaming sharp above f1.8. Not too tight not too wide either. excellent lens day or night :)

Hi guys. I am planning to get a 650D soon with the kit 1 lens. But as I am planning to use this camera for travelling come june, I would like to purchase a secondary lens. Since I already have the kit lens as my walkaround lens, will a 40mm f2.8 (for low light situations) or a wide angle lens (for scenery) be more suited for my needs?

As far as low light situations, you would be better off getting the 50mm f/1.8 rather than the 40mm f/2.8... wider aperture in the former and half the cost.

If you are going to be using it for travelling purposes, I would lean towards the wide angle lens. There are several excellent models to choose from.
