Isn't the purpose of this device is so you don't have to be tethered to a computer?

You'll only connect it to the computer for transfers either way, as it is with every iPod and iPhone now. Isn't an automatic data backup worth a temporary tether?

This iPad is only a MID (mobile internet device) I have no use for it. For the price, i'll get a netbook, it is far more capable than this MID, at least its a computer where i can do many more things on it besides surfing the net.

My vote :thumbsd:
To me, iPad is a piece of crap

who say got no use

- use it for waitress to take order
- photographers use to show off portfolio
- prospective employees use iPad to show off CV
- property agent and insurance agent can use during road show
- education - lots of uses
- can use as canvas ...drawing...
- use in survey on the streets

And all this can be done with existing devices that cost less.

FYI, using as a canvas is hard if you can only use your finger.

1ghz should be powerful enough to handle office work. There are older computers out there doing office work.

The question is what type of office work and the software required.

It may be powerful, but it can't multitask.

It's an overgrown iPod Touch.

Nah, no point. It's even too heavy to be a nice ebook reader.

hmmm... Stevie keeps on stressing that the iPad is awesome, phenomenal, technologically advance, easy to use, etc... but still can't multi-task. haiz...

now don't know whether to get it or not. even if i do get it, i will not go for the 3G version. wondering if can do internet tethering between the iPad and iPhone

I currently have an iPod Touch so don't need one right now. But I'm going to buy one when my old iPod Touch dies on me.

Nope. The iPad is running an iPhone OS. Unless you can do the tethering via Wi-Fi, and use the iPhone as a router.

Why wouldn't the iPad (this still sends me into helpless giggling) be able to tether to the iPhone? iPhone can connect to another iPhone via wifi right?

iPhone draws much of the same critisms (missing this or that, just a fad) when it came out, but look where it is now.

I think we should hold our judgement until we have the product on our hands for testing.

No, no. I remember when Steve announced the iPhone back in Jan 2008 Macworld, Apple share price shot up, I was WOWed and wanted to own one right away. Totally different sentiment, not same at all. Well, I think many people will buy it because it is Apple.

Much as I hate to say it, the iPhone was revolutionary at it's time. Yes, it was missing all the key features of the phone but it's interface and apps was truely something new and great. This? Not so much.

I'm really curious about this piece of technology, just as devices like Amazon's Kindle. And especially the comment made by Jeff Bezos.

The Amazon founder once commented that technology like this will one day replace our thousand years old technology, the inked paper.

I think that is a very hard argument to make. What do you guys think?

i think that this product is targeted at a different audience
for those who do not already have an iPhone/iPod Touch and only use their notebooks/desktops to surf the internet

I think it's also targetted towards iphone/ipod touch users that something better. I can't remember how many times I've wished that my iPod Touch's screen is bigger.

I don't own an iPhone/iPod Touch yet, but will not be getting the iPad. Reason? The look of the iPhone is already getting very boring, with so many people using the same phone that has no variation in its appearance except black & white. Now a super big looking iPhone? I think Apple can do better, and I'll pass.

ipod touch users maybe, but the iPhone is more useful at the moment
lets see what the app developers can come out with to make use of the new screen real estate and resolution

there are gazillion different cases to differentiate your iphone

True.

It's also clear from the event that they are targetting netbook and kindle users. i believe there is a class of netbook users that only use their machines for checking emails, chatting and browsing the internet (like my wife and kids). The main drawback now is flash support - or the lack of it - especially for facebook gamers out there.

Still, it's not hard to imagine those facebook app developers porting their games to iPad now that it has a bigger screen. We'll see...

i believe the iPad is targeted at existing iPhone/iPod Touch users by large. Stevie were saying during the closing minutes of the presentation, "Those who have used the iPhone/iPod Touch would have already know how to use the iPad even before it is launch". what more, the 140,000 apps can be used in the iPad without mods. i don't think netbook users will be swayed towards the iPad. it's completely a different machine.

if the device works great with awesome features, i wouldn't be surprised if 7 out of 10 people are using it. why want to be different and use something else that can't even match the iPhone's usability?

i don't mind being a common joe if i'm happy with the iPhone. like what ortega mentioned, want to be different... just dress your iPhone up.

Haha, true also. iPhone does have its strong point in that it has easy to use OS and huge collection of applications. But I would prefer something more unique then just a different skin. It's just personal preference anyway. :)
